For a quick, shareable record of one public page, use Internet Archive’s Save Page Now and keep the archive link. For a local, replayable copy of pages and interactions you browse, use Webrecorder’s ArchiveWeb.page. For an automated whole-site crawl or a managed collection, look at Browsertrix or Archive-It. None of these choices guarantees that every page, resource, or interactive state has been preserved, so open and inspect the result.
Choose the archiving method by scope
| Your goal | Suitable method | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a public reference to one page | Internet Archive Save Page Now | It saves the submitted page, including images and CSS, but does not save outlinks or start a whole-site crawl. Open the generated archive URL to check it. |
| Keep a local, replayable capture of content loaded while browsing | Webrecorder ArchiveWeb.page | Visit the pages and states that matter, then inspect the replay. It captures resources loaded during your browsing session, not every possible site state. |
| Run an automated whole-site crawl | Browsertrix | Webrecorder points whole-site automated crawling use cases to Browsertrix; confirm the crawl scope and review the output for your site. |
| Manage an institutional crawling project | Archive-It | Internet Archive describes Archive-It as a subscription service for web crawling projects. Confirm current scope and terms with the provider. |
Save one page to the Wayback Machine
Use Internet Archive’s Save Page Now when you want a public snapshot link for a single page. The service’s help page says the submission saves that page, including images and CSS, but not its outlinks. It is not a command to crawl the rest of the site.

- Open Save Page Now and submit the exact page URL you want to preserve.
- Wait for the save operation to finish and copy the resulting archive URL.
- Open that URL in a separate tab. Check the main content, images, and any elements important to your purpose.
- If other pages matter, submit those URLs individually or choose a broader archiving workflow.
Some sites prohibit crawling, and some SSL settings can cause saves to fail, according to the help page. If a submission does not work, the result is not proof that the page is safely archived elsewhere; consider a local capture or an appropriate crawling service.
Capture pages and interactions locally with ArchiveWeb.page
ArchiveWeb.page is suited to recording material as you browse. Its product information describes local storage unless you share the capture, replay, and WARC/WACZ export. The user guide says captures include resources loaded on the page, such as HTML, images, video, stylesheets, scripts, and data files.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Start a capture in the ArchiveWeb.page browser extension or desktop app.
- Browse to every page you need to preserve. Perform the relevant actions—such as opening tabs, menus, or other interface states—so the resources for those states load during capture.
- Allow capture to finish, then stop and save it.
- Replay the capture and inspect the pages and interactions you care about. Export to WARC or WACZ if you need an archive file outside the app.
A capture reflects what loaded during that session. A page you never visited, a state you never opened, or a resource that failed to load may not be represented. Treat replay and inspection as part of the archiving process, not an optional polish step.
When a whole-site or managed crawl makes sense
Automated whole-site crawling
For a multi-page site that needs an automated crawl, Webrecorder directs users to Browsertrix. Define which parts of the site you need and review the crawl output against that scope; a completed crawl alone does not establish that every resource or interactive state was captured.

Institutional crawling projects
Archive-It is described by Internet Archive as a subscription service for web crawling projects. It is the option to investigate when you need a managed collection workflow rather than a one-page save. Check its current terms and whether its scope fits your project before relying on it.

What to check before relying on an archive
- Coverage: Is this a single submitted page, pages visited during a browser session, or a broader crawl?
- Important states: Did you open and capture the pages and interactions that matter?
- Replay: Does the saved page or local capture actually load, and are the important images and content visible?
- File and access: Do you need a public archive link, local replay, or an exported WARC/WACZ file?
- Scope fit: If you need multiple pages, do not mistake one Save Page Now submission for a site-wide copy.
If you export WARC/WACZ files and want a separate local copy, storing them on an external drive is one possible backup approach, but a drive by itself does not ensure long-term preservation.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API, not a substitute for a replayable website archive or a whole-site crawl. It can be useful when what you need is a clean visual record of a URL. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every plan includes all features; the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For the complete parameter reference, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. The API returns an image or PDF snapshot, not an archive you can browse as a website. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.
