Why Are AAA Games Getting More Expensive?

AAA budgets rise with production scale, development time, marketing, and ongoing service costs. Here’s how that shapes publisher risk—and why it does not dictate a game’s price.

AAA games cost more to make because publishers are pursuing larger, more detailed experiences that take more people and time to build. Marketing and, for live-service games, years of operations can add substantially to the bill. Those rising costs help explain why publishers make fewer, larger bets—but they do not mechanically set a game’s retail price. The cost to develop a game, its full lifetime cost, and the price a player pays are different measures.

What does it mean when a game “costs” hundreds of millions?

A development budget covers making the game; it is not necessarily the full amount spent to launch and operate it. Marketing can add substantially to the bill, and a live-service game may incur costs long after release. Lifetime-cost figures therefore cannot be compared directly with development-only budgets.

Omdia’s July 2025 reporting illustrates why the distinction matters. The figures below are disclosed costs or estimates as described by Omdia—not a representative sample of all AAA games.

Game Reported figure What the figure represents
Cyberpunk 2077 US$174 million CD Projekt Red’s disclosed total development cost for the 2020 project, as reported by Omdia.
Horizon Forbidden West US$212 million A disclosed figure for the 2022 game, as reported by Omdia.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Estimated US$300 million An estimate reported by Omdia in 2025, not a confirmed audited budget.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War US$700 million Lifetime costs in an Activision court filing, as reported by Omdia—not development-only spending.

Most game budgets are confidential, and the available disclosures use different definitions. These examples show the scale of some projects, not a reliable average or an apples-to-apples ranking.

Why does making a AAA game require so much work?

More content means more labor

Large worlds, detailed environments, polished animation, and extensive content take people to design and create. More capable hardware can support higher visual fidelity, but it does not automatically produce the characters, settings, assets, and interactions that fill a game. Omdia notes that perceived image-quality improvements can also require disproportionately more rendering power: each visible step forward may demand a larger technical effort than the last.

Longer projects compound the expense

When development takes longer, studios must sustain teams and production for longer before a game earns revenue. Ambitious scope and high technical expectations can make that commitment larger, while delays or changes can extend it further. BCG’s 2024 analysis says AAA PC and console development budgets grew at a 6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2017 through 2022.

Marketing is part of the commercial bet

Making a game is only part of the challenge; publishers also have to reach players competing for attention across a crowded market. Omdia distinguishes development spending from the larger lifetime bill once marketing is included. Deloitte’s 2025 outlook also observes that even independent studios can face rising marketing costs to stand out among major franchises.

How do live-service plans change the cost equation?

A live-service game is not finished financially when it launches. Regular updates and a long operating life can mean ongoing spending on content, servers and data centers, matchmaking, community engagement, operations, and player support. BCG identifies these as additional demands of live-service titles.

That commitment has a potential payoff: a game that retains players may earn revenue over time through sales, subscriptions, in-game purchases, advertising, or brand and franchise partnerships, as Deloitte describes. But those channels are opportunities, not evidence that a particular game will recover its costs. Deloitte notes that the biggest games may last 10 years or more, which also means a long period of service obligations and uncertainty about future returns.

Why do rising budgets make publishers more cautious?

When more money is tied up in each release, a commercial disappointment can hurt more. Publishers may respond by concentrating resources on established franchises, seeking longer-lived games, or releasing fewer titles with larger potential audiences. BCG described the pattern in its 2024 report: “With AAA game development now a $100 million endeavor, and often much more, publishers are placing fewer, heftier bets.” That is an industry-level observation, not a claim that every AAA game has a US$100 million budget.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

BCG’s figures point in the same direction but cover different scopes. Its 2024 analysis reported 6% annual compound growth in AAA PC and console development budgets for 2017–2022 and forecast 8% annual growth for 2022–2028. Separately, it estimated 5% annual compound growth in overall gaming-industry revenue from 2023–2028, with industry revenue at US$221 billion in 2024 and US$266 billion by 2028. Because one series concerns AAA PC and console budgets and the other covers the broader gaming industry, they are not a like-for-like margin calculation; they do show BCG’s view that budgets are growing faster than revenues.

BCG’s accompanying publisher comparison uses company filings and statements, adjusts costs to 2023 U.S. dollars, and includes full games and major expansions but excludes general downloadable-content releases. It is a defined cross-company illustration, not a census of AAA production.

Are new games more expensive to buy because they cost more to make?

Not automatically. Production costs, launch prices, and the inflation-adjusted value of those prices are related industry pressures, not a cost-plus formula. Publishers choose prices based on their own strategies and what they believe players will pay; Deloitte’s 2025 outlook describes continued debate and resistance around premium price increases.

Capcom’s 2025 growth-strategy discussion says its basic price strategy for newly released games is approximately US$60–70, followed by gradual reductions as market value changes. That is Capcom’s stated approach, not a universal price for AAA games, all regions, or every platform.

Whether games are “more expensive” also depends on what is being compared. A nominal sticker price does not account for inflation, and the sources cited here do not establish a comprehensive inflation-adjusted history for AAA game prices. It is therefore safer to distinguish a higher current launch price from a claim that games have become more expensive in real terms.

What strategies can publishers use to manage the risk?

Reaching more buyers can improve a project’s potential audience, although it does not guarantee a return. A European Parliament-hosted Media Outlook 2025 report describes increased interest among PC and console publishers in multi-platform releases from 2024 amid investment contraction. Digital sales, subscriptions, and microtransactions are also part of the broader revenue mix. These are ways publishers may seek revenue; none removes the risk of high production and operating costs.
