Neither Steam nor the Epic Games Store is the best choice for every PC player. Steam is a strong fit if you value its community features, Workshop, reviews and Steam Families. Epic is worth adding if you claim its free games, use Epic Rewards or find a better deal on a specific title. For a purchase, compare the exact game edition and its features on both stores before choosing.
Choose by game and household, not by launcher loyalty
A storefront’s features do not automatically apply to every game sold there. Support for cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer, controller features and mods can differ by title and edition. Check the game’s store listing and publisher information for the features that matter to you. Epic’s catalog provides title-level attributes such as cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer and controller support; Steam offers platform tools such as Workshop and community features, but individual games must support them.

When Steam is the better fit
You want a strong community layer
Steam emphasizes user reviews, discussions, recommendations and other community features, alongside its game catalog. Its platform page also highlights Workshop. If a game supports Workshop, it can make finding and managing that game’s community-created content more convenient. Verify support on the specific game; buying it on Steam does not guarantee Workshop integration or mod compatibility.

Your household needs family controls
Steam’s documented Steam Families feature can include up to six members. Its guide describes game-access management, restrictions, playtime limits and reports, plus child account recovery. See the Steam Families guide for current rules and eligibility; do not assume every game can be shared in every household arrangement.
When the Epic Games Store is the better fit
You want to claim free games
Epic states that a claimed free game remains in your library after it is no longer offered for free to new customers. You can therefore claim a game during its promotion and keep access to it in your Epic account, subject to the store’s terms. The giveaway schedule changes, so check the Epic Games Store FAQ and the store for current offers.

Rewards or a specific deal improve the value
Epic’s FAQ describes Epic Rewards, but eligibility and terms apply. A title may also be discounted differently across stores. Compare the same edition and add-ons at checkout rather than assuming one platform is routinely cheaper.

Epic’s catalog surfaces attributes including cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer and controller support. Treat these as game-level details: check the listing for the exact title and edition, and consult the publisher where an important feature is unclear.

How refunds compare
Steam
Valve says it will refund a title on request if the request is made within 14 days of purchase and the game has been played for less than two hours. Requests outside those conditions can still be submitted for review; they are not guaranteed. See Steam’s refund instructions for the process.
Epic Games Store
For PC and Mac products, Epic’s baseline is a request within 14 days of purchase (or within 14 days of release for a pre-purchase) and less than two hours of runtime. The product must be marked “refundable” or “self-refundable.” Self-refundable purchases can be returned through account transactions; products marked refundable may require contacting Player Support. The policy treats subscriptions, in-app purchases, in-game items, consumable digital items, virtual currency and gifts differently, and some are generally non-refundable, subject to applicable law. Does a developer’s revenue share make one store cheaper?
No. A store’s developer revenue split does not determine the price a player sees at checkout. Epic’s developer program terms state that, starting in 2026, a $1 million net revenue threshold per title resets each January 1; after that threshold, the standard 88/12 developer revenue split applies. That is a developer-facing policy, not a promise of lower consumer prices. Compare current regional prices, editions and discounts directly. See Epic’s revenue-share terms.

A practical way to decide where to buy
- Find the exact edition. Match the base game, deluxe edition, DLC and any bundles across both store listings.
- Check the features you will use. Confirm cloud saves, achievements, controller support, multiplayer arrangements and mod or Workshop compatibility for that particular game.
- Compare the final checkout price. Account for regional pricing, taxes, discounts and any eligible rewards.
- Check refund eligibility before paying. Note the purchase date and refund label, and review the relevant policy for the product type.
- Factor in your household and existing library. If family controls or access to community features matter, weigh Steam’s documented tools; if you already claim Epic giveaways or use its rewards, that may favor Epic for a particular purchase.
For many players, the useful answer is to keep both launchers available and choose title by title. Steam is a sensible default for its community and Workshop ecosystem or Steam Families; Epic is a useful second library for claimed giveaways, Rewards and attractive game-specific deals.
