If your Apple TV seems to start and stop, first check whether playback actually pauses or whether the picture briefly goes black while the TV changes formats. Those symptoms point to different causes: a stream interruption calls for network and service checks, while a brief blank or flicker at the start or end of playback may be an HDMI or format-switching issue.
Is playback stopping, or is the screen only going blank?
When the picture disappears, check whether audio continues and whether playback progress keeps moving. If both continue through a brief blank or flicker as playback begins or ends, the TV may be switching formats. Apple says Match Dynamic Range or Match Frame Rate can cause this behavior; it does not mean those settings explain every black screen.

On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content. Note whether Match Dynamic Range or Match Frame Rate is enabled. You can temporarily turn the enabled matching option off to see whether the display transition changes, then restore your preferred setting if it does not help. Apple’s display and hardware troubleshooting guidance describes blanking or flickering during format changes.
Could the HDMI connection be interrupting the picture?
Work through the signal path before replacing equipment. A loose cable, incorrect TV input, HDMI port, switch, or receiver can interfere with the picture even when playback itself continues.

- Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input connected to Apple TV.
- Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends, then reconnect it firmly.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV and test with another HDMI cable.
- If the signal passes through an HDMI switch or AV receiver, connect Apple TV directly to the TV temporarily. If that resolves the issue, ask the switch or receiver manufacturer for help.
For an HDMI 2.1 setup, Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable; for HDMI 2.0, it specifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. A cable test can help isolate a display connection problem, but it will not resolve an unrelated network or app interruption. These steps and cable specifications are in Apple’s Apple TV troubleshooting guidance.
Does the stream pause, buffer, or stop?
If playback progress stops or the video quality drops, check the internet connection and service before focusing on HDMI. These checks help distinguish a problem affecting one stream from a broader connection issue; they do not prove a single cause.

What to do if the problem continues
Keep track of what changes the symptom: whether audio continues during a blank screen, whether Apple TV works when connected directly to the TV, whether disabling content matching affects the transition, and whether another device on the same network also stops. If the issue remains after the relevant checks, contact Apple Support for the Apple TV or the manufacturer of the HDMI switch or receiver involved.
