A whole-home mesh Wi-Fi system can extend coverage to rooms a single router cannot reach well, but no setup can guarantee zero disconnects. First find out whether the trouble is weak Wi-Fi, one device, or an internet-service outage; then improve router placement and test any mesh points before buying more equipment.
Is the problem Wi-Fi coverage, your device, or the internet service?
Start by noting which rooms and devices lose connection, whether it happens near the router as well as farther away, and whether the problem is constant or intermittent. A problem limited to one room suggests a coverage issue; a problem limited to one device points toward that device or its Wi-Fi capability.

Try another device on the same network. If possible, test near the router and connect a computer by Ethernet. If multiple devices cannot reach the internet, check the modem, router, and provider service. If other devices work, focus on the affected device and its local Wi-Fi connection. Google recommends contacting your internet service provider when speed tests fall below expectations or another device also cannot connect (Google’s Wi-Fi performance troubleshooting guide).
What to check before adding equipment
Confirm the network is online
Check that the modem and router have power and that their cables are secure. If the entire network is offline, restarting the modem and router may help; follow the restart sequence for your specific equipment. If several devices still cannot connect, check for a provider outage or contact your ISP. Google’s offline network troubleshooting guide provides steps for its mesh systems.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Move the router to a better location
When practical, place the primary router in an open, elevated spot near the center of the area that needs coverage. Avoid hiding it in a cabinet or positioning it behind furniture, appliances, or other obstacles. Walls and construction materials can weaken signals, and neighboring networks or household devices can add interference. The best position depends on your home’s size, layout, and construction; Google’s Wi-Fi speed and reliability guidance covers factors that affect performance.
A newer router also cannot make an older client device support Wi-Fi standards it lacks. If only one older phone, laptop, or other device struggles, check its capabilities before assuming the router is the cause.

When a mesh Wi-Fi system makes sense
If several rooms or a floor still have poor coverage after you improve router placement, a whole-home mesh system is a relevant option. Mesh systems use multiple points to extend coverage. They can help with hard-to-reach areas, but each added point needs a usable connection back to the primary point or another point.
Mesh is not protection against every outage. A system may be able to reroute around a failed secondary point, but if the primary point connected to the modem goes offline, the network does too (Google’s explanation of mesh Wi-Fi).

How to place and test mesh points
- Choose an intermediate location. Put an additional point between the weak-coverage area and the nearest point, close enough to maintain a good connection. Do not place it deep inside the dead zone and expect it to relay a strong signal.
- Keep the point in an open position. As with the primary router, avoid enclosing it or blocking it with large obstacles.
- Run the system’s mesh or placement test. For Google Wifi and Nest Wifi, the mesh test checks the connection from the primary point to additional points—not the internet speed at every spot in the home. Google describes it this way: “The mesh test measures the connection between your router or primary Wifi point (the one connected to your modem) and any additional points.” See the Google mesh test guide.
- Move a point if its link is weak, then test again. Bring it closer to the primary point or another well-connected point. A weak link between points can reduce reliability and become a speed bottleneck.
Some systems also support Ethernet connections between points, which can provide a wired backhaul where the home can run cable. This is system-specific: Google says compatible Google Wifi devices can be hardwired, but that should not be assumed for every mesh system. Check the Google Wifi product and compatibility information alongside the specifications for any system you consider.

- Compatibility: Confirm that the points work together and that the system suits your existing modem/router and ISP setup. Products do not necessarily mix across brands or generations; Google, for example, says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in one mesh with older Nest Wifi or Google Wifi devices.
- Home layout: Consider how many rooms and floors need coverage, the construction materials, and whether you have powered locations where each point can still get a good connection.
- Backhaul: If you can run Ethernet between points, check that the specific system supports wired connections.
- Diagnostic tools: Look for a way to check connection quality between points or get placement guidance.
- Client devices: Older devices may not support newer Wi-Fi standards, so replacing the router alone may not improve their performance.
Without details about your home’s layout, construction, ISP, equipment, and devices, there is no reliable way to specify how many points you need or where each one should go. A mesh system can improve coverage, but it cannot prevent an ISP outage, a failed primary router, or every device-specific disconnect.
