Thermax can be operating in a growing industrial market and still receive a Sell rating because a share price reflects expected future cash earnings, margins and execution—not sector growth alone. In 2026, bearish analysts focused on the price investors were paying, the profitability of older projects and the timing of private and thermal-power capital spending. The result is a clash between a credible long-term opportunity and near-term assumptions that may already be embedded in the stock.
What a Sell rating means in this case
A broker Sell is a relative valuation and forecast judgment, not a claim that Thermax is a failing company or that industrial demand has disappeared. Analysts estimate future earnings, assign a valuation multiple and compare the implied value with the market price. If the price already discounts strong growth, even a company with rising revenue and orders can be rated Sell when execution risks or slower growth could produce a disappointing return.

Thermax’s own investor presentation cautions that “There are numerous risks and uncertainties, many of which are beyond our control, that could cause our actual results to differ materially from the forward-looking information and statements made in this presentation.” That warning applies especially to businesses whose order books convert into revenue and profit over several years.
The operating numbers are genuinely strong in places
Thermax reported consolidated revenue of Rs 10,694 crore, consolidated profit after tax of Rs 720 crore and order booking of Rs 13,871 crore for FY2025-26. Those figures support the argument that the company participates in substantial industrial demand rather than a purely speculative theme.

In Q1 FY27, revenue grew 7% year on year and order booking grew 2%. However, a Rs 91 crore project cost overrun materially affected that quarter. The combination is important: orders and sales can increase while profit growth remains weak if projects cost more to complete than expected.
Why the order book does not settle the investment question
An order book is a pipeline, not cash in the bank. It must be executed, billed, collected and completed at an acceptable margin. Delays can push revenue into later periods, while design changes, commodity prices, subcontractor problems or contractual disputes can consume the profit originally expected from a project. A large order book therefore supports visibility, but it does not guarantee earnings quality.
Valuation can overwhelm a positive sector outlook
Motilal Oswal Financial Services retained a Sell rating on 1 August 2026 and cut its target price to Rs 4,000 from Rs 4,300. Its report showed Thermax valued at 76.2 times estimated FY27 earnings per share, 48.7 times estimated FY28 EPS and 39.6 times estimated FY29 EPS. These were broker estimates at that date, not company-reported results or guaranteed future multiples.

A modest reduction in expected growth, a one-off cost overrun that becomes a pattern, or a delay in converting orders to profit can cause the market to re-rate the shares even if industrial demand remains healthy. The issue is not whether Thermax can grow; it is whether growth will be fast and profitable enough for the valuation already assigned to it.

Growth and price are separate variables
Suppose an industrial supplier increases revenue but earns less on each project. Its sales growth may look attractive while earnings grow slowly or decline. Conversely, a company with moderate sales growth can create more value if margins expand and cash conversion improves. Sell-side models therefore examine earnings per share, free-cash-flow prospects, working capital and return on capital alongside order inflows.
Legacy projects have exposed the execution risk
Motilal Oswal’s 13 November 2025 review reported weakness in second-quarter FY26 order inflows, execution and margins. Industrial Infrastructure margin fell to 1.6% from 7.1% a year earlier. In the same period, revenue in industrial products grew 12% year on year and green-solutions revenue grew 10%, showing why aggregate growth can conceal very different economics between businesses.
A low-margin or loss-making legacy order can require additional engineering, materials or subcontractor spending before the customer accepts final delivery. The cost is recognized in the current period, while the original booking may have been celebrated much earlier. That timing creates volatility and can force analysts to lower forecasts even when new orders continue to arrive.

The Rs 91 crore project cost overrun disclosed for Q1 FY27 had a direct effect on quarterly profitability. One overrun does not prove that every project is impaired, but it demonstrates why analysts distinguish between the value of an order and the margin ultimately earned on it. Investors should look for evidence that the affected project is contained, that contract terms permit recovery where applicable and that newer bids include more realistic contingencies.

Why private capex and thermal-power timing matter
Elara Securities changed its view to Sell from Reduce on 11 May 2026 despite robust Q4 FY26 operating performance. Its concerns included delayed private capital expenditure, uncertainty around thermal-power packages and a prolonged transition toward cleaner fuels. These are timing and mix risks rather than a denial that energy and industrial investment opportunities exist.
Delayed private capital expenditure
Thermax supplies systems whose purchase can depend on a customer approving a large factory, utility or process expansion. If private companies delay those decisions, bid activity may remain visible but order awards and execution move out. A delay can reduce near-term revenue without destroying the long-term project, yet a high valuation leaves less tolerance for that slippage.
Thermal-power package uncertainty
Thermal-power projects can be large, but their schedules depend on regulation, financing, fuel policy, customer approvals and the division of work among contractors. Uncertainty over which packages proceed, when they are awarded and what margins they carry makes forecasts less reliable. Analysts may discount a possible opportunity until there is a firm, executable order with acceptable commercial terms.

Cleaner fuels, energy efficiency and emissions-control systems can create structural demand for Thermax. The transition can nevertheless be gradual because customers must replace equipment, secure fuel supply, obtain permits and achieve an acceptable payback. A market may be attractive over a decade while producing uneven orders over the next few quarters.

Long-term opportunities do not remove near-term uncertainty
Elara also acknowledged healthy inflows and potential in data-centre cooling. Data centres need dependable cooling and energy infrastructure, so the sector can become a meaningful source of demand. The investment question is when that opportunity becomes material revenue, at what margin and with what capital requirements. A promising addressable market is not the same as an earnings estimate that has already been delivered.
Green solutions, industrial products and cooling can diversify Thermax away from individual project cycles. Diversification helps only if the newer businesses scale profitably and do not require disproportionate working capital or installation risk. Analysts therefore test whether growth is broad-based, recurring and cash-generative rather than counting every announced opportunity as equivalent.
How the broker views differed
The following opinions were published on different dates and use different assumptions. They should be read as time-stamped forecasts, not as a consensus guarantee.
| Broker and date | View | Reasoning highlighted |
|---|---|---|
| Motilal Oswal Financial Services, 1 August 2026 | Sell; target reduced to Rs 4,000 from Rs 4,300 | High valuation and a sharp negative surprise from a legacy Industrial Infrastructure order; cited 76.2x FY27E, 48.7x FY28E and 39.6x FY29E EPS. |
| Elara Securities, 11 May 2026 | Sell, revised from Reduce | Delayed private capex, uncertainty around thermal-power packages and a prolonged cleaner-fuel transition, while noting healthy inflows and data-centre cooling potential. |
| Motilal Oswal Financial Services, 13 November 2025 | Critical operating assessment | Weak second-quarter FY26 inflows, execution and margins; Industrial Infrastructure margin was 1.6% versus 7.1% a year earlier. |
| ICICI Direct, 31 July 2026 | Constructive counterview | Described weak Q1 profitability as legacy-related, noted that Thermax stopped bidding for low-margin, high-risk government EPC projects and expected Industrial Infrastructure margins to trend toward more than 10% by FY27-end. |
The disagreement is itself informative. ICICI Direct’s view assumes that legacy problems are being contained and that margins recover. The bearish views place more weight on valuation, project risk and the possibility that demand arrives later than expected. Different assumptions can produce Sell, Reduce or Buy/Accumulate outcomes without any analyst misunderstanding the reported order growth.

What could make the growth story fail
- Margin recovery does not occur: Industrial Infrastructure may remain near recent weak levels if old contracts continue to require remediation or new bids are won at aggressive prices.
- Cost overruns repeat: Additional project provisions would reduce profit and could force further estimate cuts.
- Private capex stays delayed: Customers may postpone plant and utility investments, slowing order conversion.
- Thermal packages are deferred or repriced: A large opportunity may not become an executable, profitable award.
- Cleaner-fuel adoption takes longer: Customers may wait for policy clarity, fuel availability or better project economics.
- Valuation contracts: Even with earnings growth, a lower market multiple can reduce shareholder returns when expectations were already elevated.
- Working capital absorbs cash: Long project cycles, advances, receivables or inventory can make accounting profit less useful if cash collection lags.
What would weaken the Sell case
The bearish thesis would become less persuasive if Thermax demonstrates several improvements together rather than just one strong quarter. Relevant evidence would include sustained Industrial Infrastructure margin recovery, no material new provisions on legacy contracts, order growth that converts into revenue on schedule, and cash flow that broadly tracks reported profit.
ICICI Direct’s expectation of Industrial Infrastructure margins above 10% by FY27-end is an explicit example of a recovery assumption. That is an analyst forecast, not a reported outcome. Investors should compare each subsequent result with the assumption and check whether the improvement comes from repeatable pricing and execution or from a single project settlement.
A practical framework for evaluating the shares
- Separate reported facts from estimates. Start with the FY2025-26 revenue, PAT and order-book figures and the Q1 FY27 growth rates. Label every target price, EPS multiple and margin forecast with its broker and date.
- Track order quality. Examine the mix of Industrial Infrastructure, industrial products and green solutions, the customer type, contract terms and expected completion period rather than relying on the headline booking number.
- Reconcile revenue with profit. Ask whether gross margin, operating margin and project provisions are improving as sales rise. A growing top line with falling margins is a warning sign.
- Check cash conversion. Compare operating cash flow with PAT and monitor receivables, advances and inventory. Project businesses can report profit before collecting cash.
- Test the valuation. Use a range of earnings and multiples. If the investment works only under rapid growth, immediate margin expansion and no execution setbacks, the margin of safety is small.
- Watch capex timing indicators. New private-sector awards, thermal-package decisions and data-centre cooling wins should be assessed for binding status, schedule and margin, not merely announced intent.
- Revisit the thesis after each result. A Sell rating can be wrong if assumptions improve; a Buy thesis can be wrong if overruns and delays persist. Update the model rather than treating any broker label as permanent.
Questions investors commonly ask
Is Thermax too expensive despite a strong order book?
It may be, depending on the earnings growth investors ultimately receive. Motilal Oswal’s 1 August 2026 estimates put the stock at 76.2 times FY27E EPS, 48.7 times FY28E and 39.6 times FY29E. Those dated multiples indicate why a strong order book alone did not satisfy that broker: the market price required substantial, profitable execution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAre Thermax’s margins being hurt by legacy projects?
There is evidence of pressure. Motilal Oswal reported Industrial Infrastructure margin of 1.6% in 2Q FY26 versus 7.1% a year earlier, and Thermax disclosed a Rs 91 crore project cost overrun in Q1 FY27. Whether those issues are temporary or structural remains the key distinction between the bearish and constructive interpretations.
Can industrial-sector growth still support the stock?
Yes. Revenue, bookings, cleaner-energy investment and data-centre cooling all provide potential demand. The question for a shareholder is whether that demand arrives soon enough, carries adequate margins and is already reflected in the share price.
Are broker targets reliable?
Targets are dated opinions built from assumptions about earnings, risk and valuation. Motilal Oswal’s reduction from Rs 4,300 to Rs 4,000 and Elara’s change from Reduce to Sell show that estimates can move when new information changes the risk-reward balance. They are not guarantees of future prices.
Bottom line
A Sell rating can coexist with strong industrial growth when analysts believe the stock price discounts too much success, while legacy-project costs, delayed capex and uncertain thermal-power timing threaten the speed or quality of earnings. Thermax’s order book and emerging cooling and cleaner-energy opportunities support the long-term case; valuation, margin recovery and cash-generating execution determine whether that case is attractive at the price being quoted.
