If your iPhone shows No Service or Searching, it is not connected to a cellular network. That can result from local coverage or an outage, a line or account issue, a SIM or eSIM problem, settings or software that need updating, roaming configuration, or—in some cases—a device fault. Carrier settings help the iPhone work with a carrier’s network and features, but updating them is not a universal fix.
What “No Service,” “Searching,” and “SOS” mean
Apple defines “No Service” and “Searching” as states in which the device is not connected to a cellular network. “SOS” or “SOS only” means it is disconnected from its own carrier network; where the capability is available, emergency calls may still be possible through other carrier networks. Apple lists Australia, Canada, and the United States for that SOS capability, so it should not be treated as ordinary cellular service or assumed to work identically everywhere. Apple’s status and troubleshooting guidance explains these indicators.

Why an iPhone may lose cellular service
There is no single cause implied by the status bar, and Apple does not rank these causes. The useful distinction is whether the problem follows the location, the line or account, the SIM/eSIM, or the device.
- Coverage or an outage: The location may have weak or unavailable coverage, or the carrier may be experiencing an outage.
- Line or account: A cellular line may be inactive or switched off, the account may need attention, the plan may be incorrect, or the carrier may have blocked or restricted the device.
- SIM or eSIM setup: A physical SIM may be damaged or incorrectly seated; an eSIM may be missing or not set up with the carrier. A recent carrier or SIM change can also make it worth checking setup.
- Software or carrier configuration: An iOS update or carrier-settings update may be available. Their availability alone does not prove they caused the loss of service.
- Travel and registration: While traveling, data roaming may need to be configured for the intended line. Some countries or regions may also require local IMEI registration for phones brought from elsewhere.
- Possible device fault: Hardware becomes a consideration if the carrier rules out network and account problems; the status message alone does not diagnose a hardware failure.
To organize the checks, note whether service fails in one place or everywhere, whether another device on the same carrier is affected, whether the line is enabled, and whether the SIM/eSIM, carrier, or location changed recently. These clues help frame the conversation with the carrier; they are not a formal diagnostic test.

What carrier settings do
Carrier settings are carrier-provided network configuration for the iPhone. Apple says updates can improve cellular connectivity and performance, and may add support for features such as 5G or Wi-Fi Calling. A carrier-settings update can therefore matter when network configuration or supported features change, but it does not establish why a particular phone lost service and is not a general repair for an outage, account restriction, inactive line, SIM problem, or hardware fault. Apple’s carrier-settings guidance describes the purpose and update process.
Try the checks in a useful order
1. Reconnect and restart
- First consider whether cellular service is available where you are. If it is, open Control Center or Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
- Leave Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- If the iPhone does not reconnect, restart it.
These are Apple-recommended troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that service will return.

2. Check that the right line and SIM/eSIM are active
- On a Dual SIM iPhone, check that the intended cellular line is switched on.
- If the expected line is missing, ask the carrier whether it needs to set up the eSIM; for a physical SIM, check that it is inserted correctly.
- If a physical SIM is damaged, does not fit the tray, or was moved from another device, ask the carrier for a replacement SIM.
3. Check for iOS and carrier-settings updates
- Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- If an update prompt appears, follow the on-screen instructions.
Apple says available carrier-settings updates normally prompt for installation, which takes less than a minute and does not prevent continued device use. A mandatory carrier update is downloaded and installed by the system and presents an OK button rather than an Update button. On the About screen, the installed version appears next to Carrier; tapping the version may show additional carrier information. If you have a new SIM or eSIM, the new carrier’s settings may be needed. Ask the carrier whether the installed settings are current.
4. Check travel settings when relevant
If you are abroad, check cellular data and Data Roaming for the line you intend to use. Available options and menu labels can vary with the iPhone’s configuration, so confirm the appropriate setting with your carrier if needed.

When to contact the carrier or Apple
The carrier can check information Apple cannot access or manage on your behalf. Ask it to verify:
- That the account is active and in good standing, and the plan is correct.
- Whether coverage is available at your location or an outage is affecting service.
- Whether the line or device has a restriction, block, or bar.
- Whether a SIM replacement, eSIM setup, current carrier settings, or local IMEI registration is needed.
If the carrier rules out account and network causes but suspects a device problem, Apple says service may be needed. On iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, Apple also says the Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help identify the source of a device issue. Neither step means that hardware is necessarily the cause; it is an escalation after the carrier checks.
