Stellar and Ethereum both support decentralized-finance activity, but neither can be called universally cheaper or faster from protocol mechanics alone. Stellar transactions pay an inclusion fee, with Soroban smart-contract calls adding resource fees; Ethereum contract calls pay gas based on computation and the price per gas unit. For timing, ledger closes and block slots describe network cadence—not guaranteed app completion or final settlement. A fair comparison needs the same transaction, route, amount, and measurement time.
How do Stellar and Ethereum DeFi fees compare?
The networks price transaction execution differently. Neither model gives a stable, all-in DeFi price without specifying the transaction and checking conditions at the time.

| Cost component | Stellar | Ethereum |
|---|---|---|
| Network execution charge | Every transaction pays an inclusion fee. Soroban smart-contract transactions also pay resource fees based on declared resource use, including computation and ledger access. Stellar fee documentation | Transactions pay gas in ETH. The charge depends on gas consumed and the price per gas unit; contract calls can consume more gas than a basic transfer. Ethereum gas documentation |
| DeFi trading costs | The protocol-level AMM charges a 30-basis-point (0.30%) pool trading fee, separate from network fees. Spread and price impact can add costs. Stellar AMM documentation | Gas is not the whole swap cost: the route may also involve spread, price impact, and application-level charges. The cited gas documentation does not establish a universal swap fee. |
| Variability | Inclusion fees may rise with congestion; Soroban resource declarations and network parameters affect resource fees. Stellar fee documentation | Gas prices change with demand and the inclusion bid. A failed transaction can still incur a gas fee. Ethereum gas documentation |
Stellar: inclusion plus Soroban resource fees
One stroop is one ten-millionth of an XLM, and Stellar’s minimum inclusion fee is expressed in stroops. That base fee is not a complete estimate for Soroban. A Soroban transaction also pays for declared resources such as CPU instructions, ledger reads and writes, I/O, transaction size, events, return values, and storage rent. If the transaction exceeds its declared limits, it can fail; fee reconciliation differs between refundable and non-refundable components. Developers can simulate a transaction to estimate its resource needs and fees before submission.
The 0.30% AMM pool charge is paid to liquidity providers in proportion to their share of the pool. It is a trading fee, not a network fee or an all-in swap estimate; pool depth and trade size affect the exchange rate and price impact.

Ethereum: gas prices computation
Gas measures computational work; it is not a fixed transaction price. The ETH charge reflects gas used multiplied by the gas price. A basic ETH transfer is therefore a poor proxy for a DeFi swap or other contract interaction, and a failed transaction can still cost gas.
How to compare actual swap costs
For a meaningful comparison, use the same date and time, transaction type, asset pair, amount, application, and route conditions. Report network fees separately from pool or protocol trading fees, spread, price impact, bridge costs, and app-specific charges where applicable. The official documentation cited here explains fee mechanics but does not supply a live, matched quote, so it cannot establish a current-dollar or token-denominated winner.

Which network is faster, and what does finality mean?
First inclusion and finality are different milestones. A transaction may appear in a block or ledger before it reaches the security milestone a user or application chooses to wait for.
Ethereum block slots and finality
Ethereum proof-of-stake divides time into 12-second slots and 32-slot epochs, according to its proof-of-stake documentation. A slot is an opportunity to propose a block; some slots can be empty, so this is not a promise that a particular transaction will be included in exactly 12 seconds. Inclusion also depends on transaction submission, fees, and network conditions.

Finality is later than initial inclusion. Ethereum checkpoint finality requires votes from a two-thirds supermajority. Ethereum’s documentation describes finality as taking about 15 minutes; the page was last updated July 23, 2026. Treat that as a current protocol-level estimate, not a guarantee about an app’s interface or end-to-end completion. See the Ethereum proof-of-stake documentation.
Stellar ledger closes
Stellar documentation describes ledger closes as taking a few seconds. That cadence is not a measured promise for a particular app or transaction. The recorded close timestamp comes from a proposing validator’s system clock: the Stellar ledger documentation says SCP may confirm a close time that lags a few seconds or is up to 60 seconds ahead. The timestamp should not be treated as a precise stopwatch. See Stellar ledger documentation.

What DeFi functionality and trade-offs differ?
Stellar’s protocol-native trading features
Stellar provides a protocol-level order-book exchange and AMM liquidity pools. Pool shares represent a proportional claim on pool reserves. These built-in features are distinct from liquidity or financial applications implemented as Soroban smart contracts; a comparison should not treat the native AMM’s fee as the price of every Stellar DeFi action. Details of the native pool mechanism are in Stellar’s AMM documentation.

Ethereum gas prices computation, so contract-heavy actions can require more gas than a simple transfer. The sources cited here establish gas mechanics, signing, and finality, but do not establish a current inventory or market-share comparison of applications on Ethereum and Stellar. Protocol-level facts alone do not show which network offers a better application, route, or user experience for a particular trade.
How to make a fair Stellar-versus-Ethereum comparison
- Match the action: compare the same kind of swap or contract call, not an ETH transfer against a Soroban interaction.
- Fix the trade conditions: use the same asset pair and amount, and record the application and route.
- Separate cost categories: list the network charge apart from trading fees, spread, price impact, bridge fees, and application charges.
- Record the observation time: fees and congestion vary, so identify when each quote was captured.
- Measure timing by milestone: report time to inclusion separately from any finality or settlement threshold, and define the observation window.
Without a matched quote or controlled timing test, claims that one network is always cheaper or faster go beyond the available evidence.
