If an iPhone alarm did not sound, first check that the alarm you meant to use is enabled and set for the right time and days. Then check that its sound is not set to None and raise the Ringtone and Alerts volume in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Silent mode and Focus modes do not silence a Clock alarm, so they are usually not the cause.
The fix depends on what happened: an alarm that did not sound at all calls for different checks than one that was too quiet or only vibrated. It also matters whether you set a regular alarm in Clock or a wake-up alarm through a Health sleep schedule. Work through the relevant settings below, one at a time, so you can identify the alarm and control that actually need attention.

Work through these checks first
- Find the alarm you intended to use. Open Clock, tap Alarms, and check that the alarm’s switch is on. Verify its time and, if it repeats, the selected days. Do not assume that an alarm with a similar time is the one you set for the morning in question.
- Choose an audible sound. Edit the alarm, open Sound, and make sure it is not set to None. If the phone only vibrated, this is one of the first settings to check. Select a sound rather than relying on vibration alone.
- Raise the alarm volume. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and move the Ringtone and Alerts slider higher. This is the setting Apple identifies for alarm volume. If you want the iPhone’s volume buttons to change that level, check the Change with Buttons option on the same settings screen; with that option disabled, the buttons do not control Ringtone and Alerts volume.
Menu wording can vary by iOS version. These checks follow Apple Support’s guidance in “How to set and change alarms on your iPhone,” accessed October 13, 2026. Check the specific alarm and its sound before changing unrelated settings: each step narrows down whether the issue is the alarm’s schedule, its audible alert, or the level at which that alert plays.

Why an alarm may be silent, quiet, or vibration-only
Apple frames the common problem in three ways: an alarm “doesn’t sound,” is “too quiet,” or the iPhone “only vibrates.” Those symptoms do not point to exactly the same setting. A disabled or incorrectly scheduled alarm may not alert when you expect; an alarm set to None may vibrate without a tone; and a low Ringtone and Alerts level can make an audible sound difficult to hear. Start with the symptom you experienced, but verify the basic alarm settings in every case.

The alarm is off or has the wrong schedule
A Clock alarm can be switched off, set to the wrong time, or configured for different repeat days than you intended. Check the particular alarm in Clock > Alarms rather than assuming that another alarm or a sleep schedule covers the same morning. Confirm the on/off switch, then check the displayed time. If the alarm is set to repeat, check the selected days against the day it was supposed to ring.
This matters even if you can see another alarm in the list. A second alarm does not prove that the intended one is enabled or set for the right days. Likewise, checking only the time is not enough if a repeating alarm is configured for different days. Verify all three details—enabled state, time, and repeat days—on the alarm you meant to use.
The sound is set to None
An alarm configured with Sound set to None can vibrate without playing an audible tone. Edit the alarm and select a sound. If the iPhone is in StandBy, Apple says alarm haptics are disabled, making an audible sound especially important. A vibration-only setup that seems adequate in other circumstances may not provide the alert you expect in StandBy.
After selecting a sound, check that you edited the alarm in question. If there are multiple regular alarms, changing one does not establish that another has an audible sound. If the alert is a scheduled wake-up alarm rather than a regular Clock alarm, review its own sound controls instead; those are managed separately.
The alert volume is too low
Alarm loudness is controlled by Ringtone and Alerts in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. The volume buttons affect this level only when Change with Buttons is enabled. If you rely on the side buttons to turn alerts up or down, check that setting rather than changing media volume and assuming the alarm level changed.
Move the Ringtone and Alerts slider to a level you can hear. The key distinction is that changing the volume of other audio does not necessarily change this alert level. If you adjusted the side buttons and the alarm remained quiet, check whether Change with Buttons is enabled and then look at the Ringtone and Alerts slider itself. This lets you verify the control that Apple identifies for alarm volume rather than inferring it from another volume setting.

If the alarm sounded but was too quiet, do not treat that as proof it failed to trigger. First raise Ringtone and Alerts, then consider whether Attention Aware could be lowering alert volume while you look at the phone. The two checks address different possibilities: one is the configured alert level, and the other is a feature Apple says can lower alert volume in a particular situation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAttention Aware may lower alert volume
On a compatible Face ID iPhone, Attention Aware features can lower alert volume while you are looking at the device. If an alarm seems unusually quiet rather than absent, check Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features. Apple describes this as lowering alert volume; it is not evidence that the alarm failed to trigger.
This is a targeted check for a quiet alert, not a universal explanation for an alarm that did not sound. If the alarm was entirely absent, verify its enabled state, time, repeat days, and sound first. If the iPhone only vibrated, check for Sound set to None. Attention Aware belongs in the troubleshooting path when the symptom is reduced volume and the device supports the feature.
Silent mode, Focus, and headphones usually are not the cause
Apple says Silent mode, Do Not Disturb, and other Focus modes do not affect the iPhone alarm sound. Connected headphones also do not prevent the alarm from playing through the iPhone’s built-in speakers. If an alarm was silent or too quiet, check its enabled state, sound, and Ringtone and Alerts level before changing Focus settings.
That distinction can save time. A Focus setting may be active when you notice the missed alarm, but Apple’s guidance says that Focus does not silence the Clock alarm. Turning Focus off is therefore not the first troubleshooting step for this symptom. Check the alarm itself and the sound and volume settings that directly control it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The same principle applies to Silent mode and connected headphones. Apple’s support article states: “Do Not Disturb, the Ring/Silent switch and Silent mode don’t affect the alarm sound.” Headphones do not redirect the troubleshooting away from the iPhone’s built-in speakers: the alarm still plays through them. If no sound was heard, continue with the alarm’s enabled state, schedule, sound selection, and Ringtone and Alerts level instead of assuming Silent mode or headphones blocked it.

Check whether you set a Clock alarm or a sleep-schedule wake-up alarm
A regular alarm in Clock and a wake-up alarm attached to a sleep schedule in Health are separate. If you use the scheduled wake-up alarm, inspect that alarm’s own controls instead of relying only on the list of regular Clock alarms. Checking one system does not verify the other.
The quickest way to choose the right path is to think about how you set the wake-up time. If you created a standard alarm in Clock, review it in Clock > Alarms. If you use the wake-up alarm connected to a Health sleep schedule, open that scheduled alarm’s controls. If you are unsure which one you rely on, inspect both systems rather than treating them as interchangeable. The relevant question is not simply whether “an alarm” is turned on; it is whether the particular alarm you expected to wake you is enabled and configured correctly.
For a regular Clock alarm
Open Clock > Alarms, select the alarm, and check its enabled state, time, repeat days, and Sound setting. A change to a regular alarm does not, by itself, verify the settings of a Health sleep schedule. If you have more than one Clock alarm, inspect the one associated with the missed alert rather than stopping after finding any enabled alarm.
For a regular alarm, the core checks are straightforward: confirm the switch is on, confirm the time, review repeat days if it repeats, and make sure Sound is not set to None. Then check the overall Ringtone and Alerts level in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Together, these checks cover the alarm’s schedule, whether it has an audible sound, and how loud that sound is set to be.
For a sleep-schedule wake-up alarm
Use the Change control for the scheduled wake-up alarm to review its enabled state, sound, volume, and snooze options. When editing, pay attention to whether the change applies to only the next alarm or to the schedule. That distinction matters if the next wake-up is correct but future scheduled alarms are not—or vice versa.
A next-alarm edit and a schedule-level edit are not the same thing. If you change only the next wake-up, do not assume that future scheduled wake-ups have also changed. If you adjust the schedule, do not assume that a one-off next alarm has the same settings without checking. After using Change, confirm which scope you selected and review the relevant enabled state, sound, volume, and snooze options.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide treats the scheduled wake-up alarm as a separate set of controls. Check the relevant alarm system directly; an enabled regular alarm does not establish that the sleep-schedule alarm is configured correctly. Conversely, reviewing the sleep schedule does not establish that a separate regular Clock alarm is enabled. Match the check to the alarm you actually expected to sound.
Do not change the iPhone’s time as a workaround
Apple cautions that manually changing the time in Settings to affect app behavior can affect alarms. If an alarm is wrong, correct its time or schedule in Clock or in the sleep-schedule controls rather than altering the phone’s system time. Changing the system time is not the recommended way to repair an alarm’s schedule.
Keep the correction within the alarm system where the setting lives. For a regular Clock alarm, edit its time or repeat days in Clock. For a scheduled wake-up, use its own controls and check whether an edit applies to the next alarm or the whole schedule. This avoids using a system-time change to compensate for an alarm setting that can be checked directly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the alarm still does not sound
Use this final pass to make sure you have checked the right controls, rather than repeating the same adjustment without confirming what changed:
- Return to Clock > Alarms and verify the specific alarm’s switch, time, repeat days, and Sound setting. Do not rely on another alarm in the list as proof that this one is ready.
- Check Settings > Sounds & Haptics and confirm Ringtone and Alerts is at a level you can hear; verify Change with Buttons if you use the volume buttons to adjust it.
- If the alarm is a sleep-schedule wake-up, inspect its separate Change controls and confirm whether your edits apply to the next alarm or the schedule.
- If the iPhone is in StandBy, ensure the alarm has an audible sound rather than None; StandBy disables alarm haptics.
- If the issue is low volume on a Face ID device, check whether Attention Aware Features are lowering alert volume while you look at the phone.
- Do not spend the first troubleshooting pass disabling Silent mode or Focus, or disconnecting headphones. Apple says these do not prevent the alarm sound from playing through the iPhone’s built-in speakers.
- Do not manually change the iPhone’s time to try to alter app behavior. Correct the alarm time or schedule in its own controls instead.
These checks address the settings Apple identifies for alarms that do not sound, sound too quietly, or only vibrate. There is no single cause established for every missed alarm, so the right fix depends on which alarm system and settings you use. Check the alarm’s identity and schedule first, then its sound, then its volume. If the symptom is specifically a quiet alert, include Attention Aware in that pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my iPhone alarm not go off?
First check that the specific alarm is enabled and set for the correct time and repeat days. Then confirm its Sound setting is not None and check Ringtone and Alerts in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. If you use a Health sleep-schedule wake-up alarm, inspect its separate controls; a regular Clock alarm does not verify the schedule alarm.

Does Silent mode or Do Not Disturb silence an iPhone alarm?
No. Apple says Silent mode, Do Not Disturb, and other Focus modes do not affect the Clock alarm sound. Check the alarm’s own settings and alert volume instead.
Why does my iPhone alarm only vibrate?
Edit the alarm and check whether Sound is set to None. Choose an audible sound. If the iPhone is in StandBy, Apple says alarm haptics are disabled, so make sure the alarm has a sound rather than relying on vibration.
Which iPhone setting controls alarm volume?
Use the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Change with Buttons determines whether the device’s volume buttons can adjust that level.

On a compatible Face ID iPhone, Attention Aware features can lower alert volume while you look at the device. Check Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features. This explains a potentially quiet alert, not necessarily an alarm that failed to trigger.
Will an alarm sound through headphones?
Apple says connected headphones do not stop the alarm from playing through the iPhone’s built-in speakers. If you did not hear it, check the alarm’s enabled state, sound, and Ringtone and Alerts level.
Are a Clock alarm and a Health sleep wake-up alarm the same?
No. They are separate alarm systems with separate controls. Review a regular alarm in Clock > Alarms; use the scheduled wake-up alarm’s Change controls for its enabled state, sound, volume, and snooze options.
Why did changing my sleep alarm not fix future wake-ups?
When editing a scheduled wake-up alarm, check whether the change applies only to the next alarm or to the schedule. A next-alarm change does not establish that future schedule settings have changed.
