Open the item’s Info panel, confirm the keyword is listed, then search in Photos and tap the matching suggestion marked “Aa.” Apple documents this workflow, but its instructions do not identify a single cause for an individual missing result.
First check whether the keyword is attached to the right item
Apple describes keywords as labels you add to photos and videos to make them easier to find. The word you remember entering may not be assigned to the item you are searching for, so verify the label before troubleshooting search.

- Open the affected photo or video in the Photos app.
- Open its Info panel by tapping Info or swiping up.
- Inspect the keyword field. Confirm that the intended word or phrase appears on this specific item.
- If it is missing, add it. Tap Add Keywords, enter the keyword or words, and tap Done. If keywords are already shown, tap Edit in that field to add another.
Apple’s guide, Add keywords to photos and videos on iPhone, describes these steps. A keyword entered on one photo or video should not be assumed to label other items; check each item you expect the search to find.
This first check separates two different problems. If the keyword is absent from the item’s Info panel, the issue is assignment: Photos has no visible label on that item to match through the documented keyword workflow. If the keyword is present, the item is labeled, and the next useful check is how you search for it. Avoid changing unrelated settings until you have established which of those two situations applies.

When checking a group of photos, verify a representative item that you know should match rather than relying on what you recall entering. The question is whether the actual photo or video currently displays the intended keyword. If you want several items to be findable under that term, inspect the items you expect to appear; do not infer from one item’s Info panel that every related item has the same label.
Search for the keyword the way Photos presents it
Return to Photos, tap Search, and enter the keyword. Apple says keyword suggestions have “Aa” before them. Tap the suggestion marked Aa to see the items associated with that keyword. This is the documented keyword-search workflow—not just a general search for any text that resembles the label.
If no “Aa” suggestion appears, verify spelling and spacing against the keyword displayed in the Info panel. Then make sure you are using Search in Photos rather than looking only at an album’s visible contents. Apple’s instructions explain how a keyword suggestion appears, but do not establish every reason it might be absent or guarantee how a particular query will be presented.

The marker matters because Photos can search for more than custom keywords. Apple’s guide gives examples such as dates, places, business names, categories, events, people identified in the library, text, and captions. A general result or suggestion related to one of those signals is not necessarily the same thing as a custom keyword match. For this specific test, look for the “Aa” marker and select the keyword suggestion rather than assuming that any result containing similar text confirms the tag is working.
After tapping the suggestion, check whether the particular photo or video appears among the associated items. There are two observations worth keeping separate: whether Photos offers an “Aa” suggestion for the entered term, and whether the expected item appears after you tap it. Recording both is more useful than simply noting that “search did not work,” because it shows where the observed behavior differs from Apple’s documented sequence.
Check where you are searching
Photos search is available from the Library or Collections tab, and Apple says you can also search within a particular album or collection. Start with the app’s main Search control if you are unsure whether a narrower view is affecting what you see. If you do search within an album or collection, confirm that the item is included there before treating its absence from that view as a failure to find the keyword.

A search scoped to a particular album or collection and a search from the broader Photos interface are different contexts to report when troubleshooting. An item that is not included in a selected album cannot be expected to show up in that album’s contents simply because it carries the keyword. For a clean check, first confirm the item is present in the location you are searching, or use the main Search control and follow the “Aa” keyword suggestion.

Apple’s guide says searches can be made in Library or Collections, or within a particular album or collection. It does not say that every kind of search signal behaves identically in all of those places. That is another reason to keep the test simple: note where you searched, use the keyword suggestion when it appears, and verify the result against the item itself.
Use a caption if the text is a description, not a tag
A caption and a custom keyword are separate ways to make an item easier to find. A keyword is a label added through the item’s keyword field; a caption is descriptive text. Apple says captions can help make photos and videos easier to find in Search. If what you want to search is a sentence or description rather than a tag, adding a caption may fit that purpose better.
Do not assume that a caption will appear as an “Aa” keyword suggestion, or that adding a keyword automatically creates a caption. Choose the field based on the kind of text you want associated with the item. If you entered the text as a caption, test it as a caption-search case; if you intend it to be a keyword, confirm that it appears in the keyword field and use the documented keyword suggestion.
Apple’s search guidance also names other searchable information, including dates, places, categories, events, text, and people identified in the library. Those are examples of Photos search signals, not proof that they are interchangeable with user-added keywords. In particular, a caption being searchable does not mean it has become a tag, and a custom keyword being attached does not mean Photos will treat it as a caption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep iPhone search separate from iCloud.com search
Apple has separate instructions for Photos on iCloud.com. Its website guide says searching for keywords there depends on allowing Data Access and Search on iCloud.com. That setting belongs to the web-search guidance; it is not part of Apple’s documented iPhone steps for searching assigned keywords. If the problem is in the iPhone Photos app, start with the item’s Info panel and the app’s Search control instead of changing an iCloud.com setting.

This distinction is practical, not just terminology. The iPhone workflow described in Add keywords to photos and videos on iPhone is to inspect or add a keyword on the item, then search in Photos and tap the “Aa” suggestion. Apple’s separate Photos on iCloud.com guidance covers keyword searching on the website and names a web-specific access setting. If you are troubleshooting the app on an iPhone, do not treat that website setting as a required step or as an explanation for an app result that is missing.
If you are actually searching on iCloud.com, identify that as the platform and follow Apple’s website-specific instructions. Mixing the two workflows can make a troubleshooting report unclear: say whether the result is missing in the iPhone Photos app or on iCloud.com, and describe the steps for that location.
Apple Intelligence is optional for this task
Apple also documents natural-language search with Apple Intelligence. Its availability depends on supported devices, software, languages, and regions. It is an additional search capability, not a requirement for finding a keyword assigned to a photo or video through the standard Photos keyword workflow.
That means a user does not need to establish Apple Intelligence eligibility to test a custom keyword. The relevant standard steps remain checking the keyword on the item and using Search in Photos, including the “Aa” suggestion if it appears. Natural-language search is a separate capability, and the cited Apple guidance does not make it a prerequisite for keyword search.
If the keyword still does not appear
Apple’s published steps establish how to add a keyword and how to select a keyword suggestion, but they do not diagnose every missing-result case. They do not establish a specific indexing delay, sync fault, or version-specific bug as the cause. Avoid assuming one of those explanations without evidence.
If you need to investigate further, note the details that distinguish an assignment problem from a search problem:

- The iPhone model and iOS version.
- Whether the intended keyword is visible in the affected item’s Info panel.
- The exact term entered in Search, including its spelling and spacing.
- Whether an “Aa” suggestion appears and whether tapping it returns the item.
- Whether you are searching from Library, Collections, or within a particular album or collection.
- Whether the search is happening in the iPhone Photos app or on iCloud.com.
Those observations do not by themselves identify a cause, but they make it possible to describe the failure precisely. If the keyword is visibly attached and the documented search steps still do not return the item, the cause remains unresolved by Apple’s general instructions; the iOS version and the exact behavior are needed to investigate it further.
A useful troubleshooting note can be brief: identify the item, report whether its Info panel shows the keyword, write down the exact query, state whether an “Aa” suggestion appeared, and say whether tapping it returned the item. Include where the search was performed and the iPhone model and iOS version. These are observations, not a diagnosis, but they prevent a keyword-assignment issue from being confused with a search-result issue.
Do not promise that waiting a particular length of time, changing an unrelated setting, or using a particular device feature will solve the problem: Apple’s cited instructions do not specify an indexing timetable or identify those as fixes. When the term is visibly attached and the normal suggestion workflow still fails, the facts available from the general user guide stop short of explaining why. Preserve the details above rather than guessing at a cause.

For a custom keyword, confirm the label on the intended photo or video, then use Photos Search and select the suggestion marked “Aa.” Use a caption when you mean descriptive text, and keep the iPhone app’s workflow distinct from keyword search on iCloud.com. Apple’s instructions describe how these features are used, but do not name a universal cause for an individual missing result.

Is a caption the same as a keyword in iPhone Photos?
No. Apple describes a keyword as a label and a caption as descriptive text. Both can help make an item easier to find, but a caption should not be assumed to appear as an “Aa” keyword suggestion.
Do I need to turn on Data Access and Search to find iPhone Photos keywords?
Apple mentions Data Access and Search in its separate instructions for searching keywords on iCloud.com. It is not part of the documented iPhone Photos keyword-search steps; use the app’s Search control and the “Aa” suggestion on iPhone.
Does Apple Intelligence have to be enabled for keyword search?
No. Apple Intelligence natural-language search is an optional capability with device, software, language, and region requirements. Apple’s standard keyword workflow is to assign a keyword and search for it in Photos.

The Bottom Line
Check the keyword on the item itself, then search in Photos and tap the suggestion marked “Aa.” Use captions for descriptive text, and do not apply iCloud.com’s separate Data Access and Search setting as an iPhone fix. If the documented workflow still fails, record the exact behavior; Apple’s general instructions do not identify a universal cause.
