A useful smart-home upgrade does not have to connect to Wi-Fi. An instant hot-water dispenser can make everyday kitchen tasks easier simply by giving you hot water when you need it. In a September 10, 2026 article, Bertel King described the under-sink Waterdrop K6 as his favorite kitchen upgrade and the countertop Waterdrop M6CG as an alternative. Neither dispenser is internet-connected, so their appeal is convenience—not app or smart-home integration.
What makes an unconnected appliance feel smart?
“Smart” can describe a practical improvement to a routine, not just a device that communicates with an app, hub, or network. If you regularly wait for water to heat for tea or use small amounts of hot water for kitchen cleanup, a dispenser designed to provide hot water on demand may remove a step from those routines.

That is the distinction behind King’s example: the K6 is a single-purpose kitchen upgrade, not a connected endpoint. The article describes personal experience, not an independent performance test. It does not establish measured time, energy, or cost savings, or independently verify water quality.
Under-sink or countertop: which setup fits?
| Consideration | Waterdrop K6 | Waterdrop M6CG |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Under the sink, connected to the water supply, as described by King. | Countertop unit with a tank that requires manual refilling, as described by King. |
| Installation trade-off | Requires an under-sink installation; the article does not establish the requirements for every home. | Avoids an under-sink installation, but takes counter space and requires tank upkeep, according to the article. |
| Controls and dispensing | Specific control options and dispense amounts are not stated in the article’s extracted details. | King reports selectable temperatures and pour amounts. His unit reportedly offered temperature adjustments in increments of around 20 degrees and 4-, 8-, 16-, or 20-ounce pours; these are his reported details, not verified specifications for every unit or revision. |
| Connectivity | Not internet-connected, according to the article. | Not internet-connected, according to the article. |
Choose under-sink if you want an out-of-sight setup
The K6 is the fit King favors if you have a suitable place beneath the sink and are comfortable with the installation. His account says that setup avoids the countertop model’s visible footprint and manual tank refills. Those are reported ownership observations, not a guarantee that installation or upkeep will be the same in every kitchen.

Choose countertop if avoiding under-sink work matters more
The M6CG is the alternative described for someone who does not want an under-sink installation. In exchange, you need space on the counter and must refill the tank. King’s account also identifies limits in temperature increments and available pour sizes; check the specifications for the exact revision you are considering rather than assuming his unit’s controls apply to all versions.
Compare with a kettle or stove-heated water
A conventional kettle or heating water on the stove may already suit your routine. The practical question is whether you value having a dispenser at the sink or counter enough to accept its installation, footprint, and upkeep. The article offers personal impressions about convenience, not a measured comparison of speed, operating cost, energy use, or capacity against a kettle or stove.

How does this differ from a connected kitchen appliance?
Connected appliances are a separate option for people who want app monitoring, remote control, alerts, or voice control. Whirlpool says Matter 1.3 added appliance categories including microwaves, ovens, vent hoods, and cooktops, while noting that manufacturers could implement those categories in future designs and that Matter-enabled products would take time to reach consumers. That announcement describes a standard’s scope, not support in every appliance currently available.

Bosch describes Matter as providing core appliance control and monitoring across platforms, while its Home Connect app retains broader features for supported appliances. KitchenAid describes app monitoring, connected cooking, voice control, and alerts on select smart appliances, with capabilities varying by model. In other words, a Matter label or an app does not by itself establish that a specific appliance exposes every function you want.

Check the exact model before buying for an ecosystem feature
- Confirm that the specific model supports the app, voice assistant, or Matter function you plan to use.
- Check which controls are available through Matter and which require the manufacturer’s app.
- Review setup requirements for that model. KitchenAid, for example, notes a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi requirement for its connection process and says capabilities vary by model.
Whirlpool’s announcement quotes its director of global IoT strategy, Ryan Craig, saying the company’s work with Matter aims to give consumers flexibility to create a smart home that fits daily life. That is Whirlpool’s stated goal, not an independent assessment of how well a particular appliance works.

It may be worth considering if you regularly want hot water and prefer a dispenser built into the kitchen over heating water separately. The choice depends less on whether it is “smart” in the connected-device sense and more on which trade-off suits your kitchen: under-sink installation or a countertop footprint and tank refills. If your main goal is remote control or ecosystem integration, these two dispensers do not answer it; look for a connected appliance whose exact model supports the functions you need.
