Why AMD FSR 4 Is Missing or Not Working in a Game

AMD now calls FSR 4 “FSR Upscaling.” Check your Radeon GPU, the game’s integration and the correct native or Adrenalin activation path to diagnose a missing or inactive option.

If FSR 4 is missing, check three things before changing settings: whether your Radeon GPU supports the feature, whether the game has the required FSR integration, and whether you are using the activation route that game supports. AMD now calls FSR 4 “FSR Upscaling,” but a game may still label it “AMD FSR 4.” Adrenalin cannot add the option to every game.

What “FSR 4” means in a game now

AMD renamed FSR 4 to FSR Upscaling as part of the broader FSR “Redstone” feature naming. The rename can make a supported feature hard to spot: one game may show “AMD FSR 4,” while another may use “FSR Upscaling.” Check both names in the game’s graphics or video menu before treating the option as unavailable.

Also distinguish upscaling from frame generation. They are separate features, with separate integration requirements in AMD’s supported-games information. A game’s support for one does not establish that it supports the other. Likewise, a setting called simply “FSR” may refer to an earlier version or another implementation; its presence alone does not confirm that the ML-based FSR Upscaling option is active.

Check whether your GPU supports ML-based FSR Upscaling

AMD lists Radeon RX 7000 Series and RX 9000 Series graphics for ML-based FSR Upscaling. If your card is outside those families, the ML-based feature may not be offered even if the game supports FSR technology more generally. Check the exact GPU model, not just the Radeon brand or the presence of an FSR setting in the game.

Do not use this hardware check to infer support for every Redstone feature. Verify the precise feature you want—upscaling or frame generation—against AMD’s current supported-games information and the requirements shown for your configuration. A title’s entry can be feature-, driver-, and GPU-family-specific, and the list can change over time.

AMD’s FSR Technical Preview expanded-game-support notes described support across more than 60 titles at that time. That figure is a preview-era snapshot, not a current total and not a promise that every listed title supports every feature on every GPU. Use AMD’s current supported-games page to check the exact game and feature instead of relying on an old headline count.

Check whether the game has an eligible integration

FSR Upscaling can reach a game through its own integration or, in eligible cases, through an Adrenalin driver upgrade. Neither route is universal. A game that is absent from the relevant supported-games list, or whose integration does not meet the stated minimum, may not expose the ML-based option.

Route What to look for What to do
Native game integration The game itself supports ML-based FSR Upscaling and offers the control in its menu. Use the game’s graphics or video options; the Adrenalin driver toggle is not necessarily the activation route.
Adrenalin driver upgrade The title is eligible for the driver-upgrade feature and meets AMD’s integration requirements. Enable the applicable Adrenalin toggle, then enable the game’s FSR option where required.

For the driver-upgrade route, AMD’s supported-games information states a minimum of FSR 3.1 for ML-based upscaling or FSR 3.1.4 for ML-based frame generation, with standard integration and DirectX 12 on Windows 11. Treat these as route-specific requirements, not a guarantee that every game at those versions will expose every feature. Check the individual title entry and the feature you intend to use.

This distinction explains why “the game supports FSR” is not enough to diagnose compatibility. The relevant questions are whether it supports the specific ML-based feature, whether it uses a qualifying integration, and whether AMD lists the title for the driver-upgrade path if you are relying on Adrenalin. A game can have an FSR option and still lack the eligible route for FSR Upscaling.

Enable the feature using the route the game supports

If the game has native integration

  1. Open the game’s graphics or video settings.
  2. Look for “FSR Upscaling” and “AMD FSR 4”; the exact label depends on the game.
  3. Select the feature and, if the game provides one, choose the desired quality preset in the game menu.
  4. Apply the setting and follow any restart prompt shown by the game.

AMD describes native integration as an option users can enable directly from the game menu. If the control is absent, confirm the game’s exact entry and feature support before trying the driver-upgrade steps.

If the game uses the Adrenalin driver-upgrade route

  1. Install the supported game, then close it completely.
  2. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  3. Go to Gaming > Graphics.
  4. Enable the applicable FSR Upscaling and/or Frame Generation toggle.
  5. Launch the game and open its graphics or video options.
  6. Where required, turn on the game’s FSR 3.1 option. Select the desired quality preset in the game menu if available.

The order matters: AMD’s directions call for enabling the driver feature while the game is closed, then launching the game and enabling its FSR 3.1 option where necessary. Turning on a game-side option alone may not activate an eligible driver upgrade; enabling the driver toggle alone may not be enough either.

If you do not see a per-game setting, first confirm the game is closed while you configure the driver toggle, then check whether the title is listed for that route. Do not assume that a global or per-game driver toggle can override a missing game integration or a title that is not eligible.

Diagnose what “missing” or “inactive” means

The option is not in the game menu

  • Search for both “AMD FSR 4” and “FSR Upscaling.” The game may use either label.
  • Check that the GPU is a Radeon RX 7000 or RX 9000 Series model for ML-based FSR Upscaling.
  • Confirm whether the title uses native integration or is listed for the driver-upgrade route.
  • For the driver route, check the game’s integration version, DirectX 12 use, Windows version, and the minimum for the feature: FSR 3.1 for upscaling or FSR 3.1.4 for frame generation.

If these checks do not establish an eligible path, a missing menu option may reflect compatibility rather than a setting you can force on.

The Adrenalin toggle or per-game profile is missing

AMD’s FSR technical-preview notes documented a profile-creation problem affecting Blades of Fire, Dragonkin, and Stellar Blade. The suggested temporary workaround was enabling FSR 4 in global graphics settings rather than relying on a per-game profile. This was a preview-era note; it does not establish that the same issue remains in current software or that the workaround applies to other titles.

If the game is eligible but its profile does not appear, check whether your Adrenalin version has a title-specific note before changing global settings. If using the documented workaround, understand that a global graphics setting may affect more than the one game you intended to configure.

Adrenalin says FSR is inactive, or the game does not seem to use it

First identify which feature and route you are checking. For a driver-upgraded game, verify that the game was closed when you enabled the Adrenalin toggle, then launch it and turn on its FSR 3.1 setting if required. For a native implementation, confirm the setting in the game itself. An upscaling toggle does not by itself confirm that frame generation is enabled, and vice versa.

Then verify that the game is running with the required integration and graphics API for the driver route. AMD specifies DirectX 12 and standard integration for the supported driver-upgrade cases described on its list. If the title does not meet those conditions, the driver control may not produce the expected result.

Check driver notes for title- and Windows-specific problems

Some reported failures were specific to a particular title and driver release. AMD’s Adrenalin 25.6.3 notes listed FSR 4 not enabling on RX 9000 products in Dragonkin: The Banished, Blades of Fire, RoadCraft, The Alters, Star Wars Outlaws, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2; AMD marked those issues fixed in that release. These are historical release-note entries, not evidence that the same bug affects a current driver.

AMD’s 25.4.1 notes separately described an FSR 4 limitation in Naraka: Bladepoint for some Windows 10 users. That example matters because the same game and GPU can behave differently depending on operating system and driver version. It does not establish that every Windows 10 configuration is affected, or that the limitation remains in later releases.

Before reinstalling software or considering different hardware, check the current Adrenalin release notes for your game, operating system, and GPU family, then compare them with the current supported-games listing. Older notes can help explain a past failure, but only current compatibility information can establish whether a fix or restriction applies to your setup now.

Gather the right details if it still does not work

If the GPU, game support, integration requirements, activation route, and current release notes do not explain the problem, record the configuration before contacting AMD support or seeking a title-specific answer. Include:

  • The exact game title and game version.
  • Your Radeon GPU model.
  • Your Windows version.
  • Your AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition version.
  • Whether the game is running in DirectX 12.
  • Whether you are trying to enable ML-based upscaling, frame generation, or both.
  • Which route you used and the menu or toggle where the feature is missing or reported inactive.

Those details help separate a hardware limitation from an unsupported integration, a sequence mistake, or a release-specific issue. There is no single documented fix that applies to every case in which FSR 4 is absent or inactive.

Do not treat a hardware purchase as the first fix

An RX 7000 or RX 9000 Series GPU is relevant if your current card is outside the listed families and you have decided ML-based FSR Upscaling is worth pursuing. But a supported GPU cannot supply missing game integration or resolve a driver bug by itself. Establish that hardware is actually the limiting factor before considering an upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is FSR 4 missing from my game?

The game may use the newer “FSR Upscaling” label, your GPU may be outside the listed Radeon RX 7000 or RX 9000 families for ML-based upscaling, or the title may lack a qualifying integration or eligible driver-upgrade route. Check the exact feature and game entry in AMD’s current supported-games information.

Can I force FSR 4 on in any game with Adrenalin?

No. AMD’s driver-upgrade route applies only to eligible games with the required integration. AMD’s supported-games information specifies minimum integration requirements and DirectX 12 on Windows 11 for the described driver-upgrade cases; Adrenalin is not a universal force-enable switch.

Does a game’s FSR 3 option mean it supports FSR 4?

Not necessarily. The driver-upgrade route requires at least FSR 3.1 for ML-based upscaling, and AMD lists separate requirements for frame generation. Confirm the specific title and feature rather than relying on a general FSR label.

Why does AMD Software show FSR as inactive?

Check whether you enabled the right feature for the game’s route. For an eligible driver-upgraded game, close the game, enable the applicable toggle under Gaming > Graphics, relaunch, and turn on the game’s FSR 3.1 setting where required. For native integration, use the in-game control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is FSR 4 supported on Windows 10?

The supported-games information cited for the driver-upgrade route specifies Windows 11 and DirectX 12. AMD’s Adrenalin 25.4.1 notes also documented a Naraka: Bladepoint limitation for some Windows 10 users. Check current game and driver notes for your exact setup; that historical example does not establish a universal Windows 10 rule.

Should I upgrade my GPU if FSR 4 is missing?

Only consider hardware after confirming it is the limiting factor. AMD lists RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series for ML-based FSR Upscaling, but a compatible card will not add missing game integration or fix a title-specific driver issue.

The Bottom Line

Start with the exact feature, your Radeon GPU family, and the game’s supported integration path. Search for both “AMD FSR 4” and “FSR Upscaling,” then follow the native-menu or Adrenalin sequence that applies. If it still fails, compare the game, Windows, and driver versions with AMD’s current supported-games page and release notes before reinstalling software or considering new hardware.
