How to Talk to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Instead of Typing

You can speak to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini in two different ways: use dictation to turn what you say into a text prompt, or start a voice conversation so the assistant also answers aloud. Pick dictation when you want to check or edit your wording, and voice mode when you want a spoken back-and-forth. The available controls and features vary by product, device, account, settings, and rollout.

Choose dictation or a spoken conversation

“Talk to an AI” can mean either entering a prompt by speaking or having an ongoing conversation out loud. These are different features, even when both are represented by a microphone icon.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Dictation or spoken prompt: You speak, the service converts your words into prompt text, and the assistant replies in text. Depending on the product, you can review or edit the transcription before sending.
  • Voice conversation: You speak to the assistant and it responds aloud. Some voice experiences also show text, let you switch between speaking and typing, or support interruptions and changes of subject.

If you are in a quiet place, want an answer you can read, or need to verify names and numbers before sending, dictation is usually the better fit. For a hands-free exchange or a conversation that feels more natural spoken aloud, choose the product’s voice mode. You do not need a special microphone to begin; a phone or computer’s built-in microphone is enough.

One quick way to tell which feature you have opened is to look at what happens after you speak. If your words appear in the prompt box and wait for you to send them, you are dictating. If the assistant starts speaking back as part of an ongoing exchange, you are in a voice conversation. The distinction matters for both workflow and privacy: a dictated recording, a transcript, and a live voice exchange may be handled differently.

Quick comparison: which option should you use?

What you want Options What to expect
Speak a prompt and read the reply ChatGPT Dictation, Claude mobile dictation, Gemini’s spoken-prompt flow, or keyboard voice typing Speech becomes text for the prompt. Check the wording before sending if errors would matter.
Speak and hear the assistant’s reply ChatGPT Voice, Claude voice mode, or Gemini Live The assistant responds aloud. Transcript display, controls, and availability differ by product and account.
Speak without having the assistant answer aloud Dictation or keyboard voice typing Use speech to enter a text prompt, then read the response rather than starting a spoken exchange.
Continue by typing after speaking, or vice versa Claude voice mode or Gemini Live; ChatGPT Voice also provides text to follow along Support for switching or viewing text depends on the specific voice experience.

There is no controlled, directly comparable speech-recognition benchmark among these products in the cited official help information, so this comparison does not rank them by accuracy. Choose based on the interaction you need, supported device, language, privacy terms, and whether you want to continue in text.

For a one-off prompt, the simplest route is often the assistant’s own dictation control: it keeps the speech-to-text step inside the chat you are using. Keyboard voice typing is more general because it enters text into the field that is active, but the documented keyboard path here is Gboard on Android. A spoken conversation is a separate choice when you want spoken responses and a continuous exchange rather than a single prompt.

How to speak to ChatGPT

Start a spoken conversation with Voice

  1. Open ChatGPT on iOS or Android, or open ChatGPT on the web.
  2. Tap the Voice icon in the message bar on mobile, or the Voice icon in the prompt window on the web.
  3. If prompted, allow microphone access. Speak when the voice conversation begins; use the on-screen controls to manage or end it.

OpenAI describes multiple Voice experiences, and the options available can depend on your account and settings. Its current help information describes Live as supporting natural back-and-forth conversation and says you can follow along in text. Voice recognition and transcripts can be imperfect; the text shown may not exactly match what you said.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Voice is the option to choose if you want to hear ChatGPT answer rather than just submit a spoken prompt. You can speak naturally, listen, and continue the exchange. Because ChatGPT’s available Voice experiences depend on account and settings, the exact appearance or available controls may not be the same for everyone. If the Voice icon or an expected option is absent, check that you are using the relevant app or web experience and that the feature is available for your account.

Dictate a prompt for a written reply

  1. Open a chat and tap the microphone control for Dictation.
  2. Say your prompt, then inspect the transcribed text. Correct it if needed.
  3. Send the prompt when the wording is right. ChatGPT will respond in the conversation as text.

Dictation is useful when you want to compose a longer prompt aloud but prefer to edit it before it reaches the assistant. It is not the same as Voice: the recording is transcribed into an editable message rather than starting a spoken exchange.

That editable step is especially useful when a request contains several requirements, a name, a date, or a number. Read the prompt as it appears in the chat box rather than assuming that the transcript is exact. You can correct a misheard word before sending, or add a missing condition by typing. OpenAI cautions that recognition and transcripts can be affected by overlapping speech, background noise, fast conversation, microphone issues, and network issues.

How to speak to Claude

Use mobile dictation for a text prompt

  1. Open Claude on iOS or Android and select the chat input.
  2. Use the dictation control and speak your prompt.
  3. Review the text in the input, then send it to receive a written response.

Anthropic lists dictation support for English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Ukrainian. The feature-specific help information says the recording is deleted after conversion and is not retained or used to train Anthropic’s generative models.

That list is useful if you are choosing dictation for a particular language, but it applies to Claude’s mobile dictation feature as described by Anthropic. Do not assume that the same list describes every Claude voice capability or every device. If your language is not listed, or the dictation control is unavailable, you can type the prompt instead or check the current feature information for your app and account.

Start Claude voice mode

  1. Open Claude Mobile, Claude Desktop, or Claude on the web.
  2. Start voice mode using the available voice control, then speak to Claude.
  3. Continue by voice or switch between voice and text in the same conversation.

Anthropic’s help article dated July 23, 2026 describes voice mode as a beta available across plans on Claude Mobile for iOS and Android, Claude Desktop, and the web. It is designed to work best on a phone. Voice mode can use web search and connected tools when those are available to the account; access to a particular connection or tool is not guaranteed for every user.

Voice mode is therefore not limited to a short spoken question: Anthropic describes it as an ongoing conversation in which you can move between speaking and typing without starting over. If a connected tool matters to your task, confirm that it is actually available in your account rather than assuming voice mode automatically includes every connection. Beta features and their controls can change, so the interface you see may differ.

How to speak to Gemini

Send a spoken prompt

  1. Open the Gemini app.
  2. Tap Microphone and say your question or prompt.
  3. Send it and read Gemini’s response.

Google’s Gemini mobile help also documents Android activation options such as “Hey Google” when that option is enabled. Voice activation settings and availability can vary, so use the in-app microphone control if a spoken shortcut is not configured on your device.

The microphone flow is for getting a spoken question or request into Gemini. It does not by itself mean that you have started Gemini Live. If you want to review what you are asking before it goes through, check the app’s prompt flow and correct the text if it is shown. If you want a continuing exchange with spoken replies, look for Live instead.

Use Gemini Live for a continuing conversation

  1. Open the Gemini app and start Gemini Live using the available control.
  2. Speak naturally, then listen to the response.
  3. Interrupt or change the subject as needed, or move between typing and voice in the same thread where supported.

Google describes Gemini Live as a natural back-and-forth voice chat. Its product information also describes visual results and connections to apps, but exact capabilities and availability may vary. If Live or a particular connection does not appear in your app, it may not be available for your current setup.

Live is the better match for a conversation that develops over several turns: Google says you can interrupt, change the subject, and move between voice and typing in one continuous thread. That flexibility is different from dictating a single prompt and receiving a written answer. Visual results and app connections are described product capabilities, but their presence should not be assumed for every account, device, or rollout.

Use your keyboard’s voice typing instead

On Android, Gboard voice typing can enter dictated words into an AI app’s prompt box. This is keyboard dictation, not ChatGPT Voice, Claude voice mode, or Gemini Live: it supplies text to whichever app is open, and the assistant does not automatically speak back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the AI app and tap its prompt field to bring up Gboard.
  2. Tap the keyboard’s microphone and dictate your prompt.
  3. Review the text in the prompt field, make corrections, and send it in the app.

Google says Gboard’s advanced voice-typing features require a Pixel 6 or later. It says dictated text stays on-device except when using “Fix it” or detailed edits. Those advanced features are distinct from basic use of an assistant’s own voice mode.

This can be a practical choice if you want to use the same keyboard dictation approach in an AI app’s text field rather than looking for a separate assistant voice feature. It is still a text-entry method: Gboard supplies words to the prompt box, and the AI app handles the conversation after you send them. Keep the Pixel 6-or-later requirement in mind specifically for Gboard’s advanced voice-typing features; it is not a requirement for using the assistants’ own voice controls.

Set up voice input and improve recognition

For the basic setup, open the assistant or keyboard you plan to use, find its microphone or voice control, and grant microphone permission if the device or browser asks. No dedicated headset is required. A headset with a microphone is optional; headphones may help with interruptions or background noise, and a quieter setting can help recognition.

  • The microphone control is missing: Check that you are using the relevant app or platform, then look for an app update or the feature’s account and availability settings. Voice options are not identical across web, desktop, and mobile.
  • The service cannot hear you: Check microphone permission in the device or browser settings, confirm the correct microphone is selected if there is a choice, and try speaking in a quieter place.
  • The transcript contains errors: Pause and dictate in shorter phrases, then check the on-screen text before sending. Pay particular attention to names, numbers, dates, negations, and instructions.
  • Voice replies are interrupted or hard to follow: Try headphones or a quieter setting. If spoken output is unnecessary, switch to dictation and read the answer on screen.
  • Voice mode starts but behaves unreliably: Check the network connection and microphone permission. For text-critical work, use a typed or reviewed prompt instead of relying on an unverified transcription.

A simple first test can help separate setup trouble from recognition trouble. Start with a short, low-stakes prompt and confirm that the assistant hears you and responds in the expected way. For dictation, make sure the words appear where you expect before sending. For voice mode, confirm that the assistant is speaking and that you can use the on-screen controls to continue or exit. If a test works but longer speech does not, shorten the request and review the transcript in sections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no need to buy a microphone or headset just to try these features. Built-in phone and computer microphones are enough to get started. Optional headphones may help if the assistant’s spoken output causes interruptions or if background noise makes a conversation hard to follow; if the room is quiet and the built-in microphone works well, extra equipment is unnecessary.

Audio privacy: what happens to a recording?

Audio handling is feature-specific; do not assume that dictation and voice conversation share the same retention terms. OpenAI’s dictation FAQ says dictation audio is retained while its chat remains in chat history. After the chat is deleted, associated audio is deleted within 30 days, subject to stated security, legal, and prior-sharing exceptions. For consumer users, OpenAI says audio may be used for training if the user has chosen to share it; business inputs and outputs are not used for training by default.

Anthropic’s Claude mobile dictation help gives a different feature-specific description: its recording is deleted after transcription and is not retained or used to train its generative models. This statement concerns that mobile dictation feature; it should not be generalized to every Claude interaction or to other services.

Before speaking sensitive information, check the current in-app controls and applicable privacy terms for the particular feature and account you are using. A setting for sharing data or chat history may affect what happens to an interaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your question is “Does voice input send my recording?”, the answer depends on which product and feature you mean. For ChatGPT Dictation, OpenAI describes audio retention tied to chat history, with deletion within 30 days after the chat is deleted subject to specified exceptions. For Claude mobile dictation, Anthropic says the recording is deleted after conversion. The details above do not establish matching audio-retention terms for Gemini or for all two-way voice modes, so check the current terms for the exact feature before sharing sensitive content.

Also distinguish audio from text. A service may process audio to recognize speech and then handle the resulting prompt or conversation separately. A statement about deleting a dictation recording does not necessarily describe how the chat text is stored, and a business or consumer account may have different data controls. When privacy is important, identify whether you are using dictation, a live conversation, or keyboard voice typing, then review that feature’s current controls and policy.

Check important words before acting on an answer

A voice transcript is not necessarily a verbatim record. OpenAI specifically warns that overlap, background noise, fast conversation, and microphone or network problems can affect recognition; it also cautions that transcripts may not exactly match what was said. The same practical safeguard applies to any speech-based prompt: inspect the words that the assistant received, especially if one mistaken digit or phrase could change the result.

For important requests, state the task in short, complete sentences; spell out an unfamiliar name if needed; and review the transcription before sending. Then check the assistant’s answer as you would a typed response. Speaking changes how you enter a prompt, not the need to verify consequential advice or facts.

For example, a missing “not,” an incorrect date, or a transposed number can change what the assistant thinks you asked. Read the transcript for those high-impact details before sending. If you are in a voice conversation that does not give you a convenient chance to review a prompt first, say the key constraint clearly, listen to the response, and correct any misunderstanding in the next turn. Voice can make interaction easier, but it does not remove the need to check what the assistant heard or the answer it gives.

Which method fits your situation?

  • You want to compose a detailed request: Dictate it, review the transcription, and edit before sending.
  • You want a quick spoken exchange: Use the product’s voice conversation feature, then switch to text if you need to refine or preserve wording.
  • You are in a public or quiet setting: Use dictation and read the response, or type; a voice conversation may speak its answer aloud.
  • You use an Android phone but prefer one keyboard across apps: Try Gboard voice typing, keeping in mind that advanced voice typing has the Pixel 6-or-later requirement.
  • You need a specific language or connected tool: Check the feature’s current availability for your device and account rather than assuming every voice option supports it.

When comparing the three assistants, focus on the practical fit rather than a claim that one is universally better. Ask yourself whether you want editable text or a spoken reply, whether the feature is available on your device and account, whether it supports the language you need, and how it handles audio and chat data. Also consider whether you can continue in the same conversation by typing after speaking. Product availability, labels, language support, plan allowances, and privacy terms can change over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I talk to ChatGPT instead of typing?

For a prompt that you want to read and edit, open a chat, tap the Dictation microphone, speak, review the transcription, and send it. For a spoken back-and-forth, open ChatGPT Voice from the Voice icon on iOS or Android or on the web, allow microphone access if prompted, and speak when the conversation begins.

Can I talk to Claude and have it answer out loud?

Yes. Claude voice mode is the two-way spoken conversation option described by Anthropic. Its July 23, 2026 help article describes the beta as available across plans on Claude Mobile, Claude Desktop, and the web, with the experience designed to work best on a phone. You can also switch between voice and text in the same conversation. Availability and connected tools can vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is Gemini Live?

Gemini Live is Google’s continuing voice-chat experience in the Gemini app. It supports natural back-and-forth conversation, including interrupting or changing the subject, and Google describes moving between typing and voice in one continuous thread. Exact features and availability may vary.

Does voice input send or keep my recording?

It depends on the product and feature. OpenAI says ChatGPT Dictation audio is retained while the chat remains in history and deleted within 30 days after the chat is deleted, subject to stated exceptions. Anthropic says Claude mobile dictation audio is deleted after transcription and is not retained or used to train its generative models. Check the current terms for other features and accounts, including Gemini and two-way voice modes.

Can I use voice input without having the assistant speak back?

Yes. Use a dictation or spoken-prompt feature, or on Android use Gboard voice typing to enter text in the AI app’s prompt box. The assistant then replies in text. Gboard’s advanced voice-typing features require Pixel 6 or later; Google says dictated text stays on-device except when using “Fix it” or detailed edits.

Do I need a headset or a special microphone?

No. A built-in phone or computer microphone is enough to get started. A headset with a microphone is optional; headphones may help with interruptions or background noise, and a quieter setting can improve the experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which assistant has the most accurate voice recognition?

The official product information described here does not provide a controlled, directly comparable accuracy benchmark across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Rather than assume one is most accurate, review transcripts for names, numbers, dates, and instructions, and choose based on the feature, device, language, privacy terms, and workflow you need.

The Bottom Line

To speak a prompt and get a written answer, use dictation and review the text before sending. To hear the assistant respond and continue talking, use ChatGPT Voice, Claude voice mode, or Gemini Live. Check feature availability and privacy terms for your device and account, and verify important words and answers.
