Hunter x Hunter does not let people choose their Nen affinity like a character-class option: affinity is tied to innate talent, desire, and environment, and water divination is the fictional method used to identify it. If you are choosing a favorite for a quiz, role-play, or character design, start with the kind of ability you find most appealing—not a claim that a personality test can reveal a real-world aura type.
What Nen and aura mean
Nen is the energy, or aura, emitted by the human body in Hunter x Hunter. A Nen ability is the capacity to control and adjust that energy. Nippon Television’s official Hunter x Hunter glossary describes the distinction in Japanese: 「人間が身体から発するエネルギーを「オーラ（念）」といい、それを自在に操作・増減する能力を「念能力」と呼ぶ。」 A close English rendering is: The energy emitted by the human body is called aura (Nen), and the ability to freely control and increase or decrease it is called Nen ability. That English sentence is a translation, not an official English quotation.

The six Nen categories describe different ways abilities use aura. They are not the same thing as the four foundational practices—Ten, Zetsu, Ren, and Hatsu. Those practices are not additional Nen types. Keeping the distinction clear helps avoid a common mix-up: a character’s category concerns affinity, while the foundational practices concern ways Nen is used.

The six Nen types, in plain language
The official glossary identifies six main categories. Their definitions are useful for comparing the kind of ability each one supports, but they do not amount to a ranking of strength or a complete rulebook for every possible ability.

Enhancement: make an existing capability stronger
Enhancement is the most direct fit if the central idea is increasing the natural function or power of a body or an object. For a character concept, begin with the thing being strengthened: a bodily capability, an object’s power, or another natural function. Then ask what makes that boost matter to the character. A category label alone does not explain the ability’s purpose, limitations, or personality; it identifies the broad way aura is being used.
Emission: send aura outward
Emission is defined by projecting aura away from the user. Choose it as a favorite if the idea of an ability reaching outward is more appealing than one centered on changing aura or creating an object. That description gives the broad category, not a promise about range, power, or any particular technique. The official glossary’s short definition does not establish a universal measurement for those details.
Transmutation: alter aura’s properties
Transmutation changes the properties of aura itself. The key distinction is that the thing being changed is aura. If a concept depends on giving aura altered properties, Transmutation is the closer description. A reader should not treat this as interchangeable with Conjuration: one changes aura’s properties, while the other materializes aura into an object.
Conjuration: materialize an object
Conjuration is the category for materializing aura into objects. It may appeal to readers who like abilities built around a created tool or object. For a character-design exercise, decide what role the object serves before deciding whether the category fits: the distinction from Transmutation depends on whether the concept changes aura’s properties or produces an object from aura.
Manipulation: control an object or living thing
Manipulation involves controlling objects or living things through aura. The category is a broad description of the ability’s function, not a complete account of how any particular ability operates. When choosing it as a creative preference, focus on control as the central action and on what that action says about the character.
Specialization: an ability outside the other five
Specialization covers abilities that do not fit the other five categories. It is therefore the broad exception category, not simply a synonym for “rare,” “powerful,” or “my favorite.” If a concept has an unusual effect, first consider whether one of the five defined functions already describes it. The official glossary does not provide a general rule that makes Specialization the strongest or best choice.
Can you choose your Nen affinity?
Not in the sense of selecting a category at will. Nippon Television’s official glossary says affinity is generally one category and connects it to innate talent, desire, and environment. The story’s system therefore treats a person’s home affinity as something discovered, not a menu setting a person picks because it sounds appealing.

That does not mean the home category is an absolute ban on abilities involving other categories. The glossary explains that categories adjacent to a person’s affinity on the six-type diagram are easier to learn, while the opposite category is the most difficult. This makes affinity a starting point for understanding learning relationships, not a claim that a character can never use anything outside the home category. The available official glossary information does not provide a universal percentage, training timetable, or guarantee of what a particular character can master, so those should not be inferred from the adjacency rule.
How water divination fits in
Water divination is the in-world method identified by Nippon Television for finding a person’s Nen category. It belongs to the fictional Nen system and presupposes the use of aura. It is not an ordinary glass-of-water test that readers can reproduce to learn a real personal type.

The official glossary excerpt establishes the method but does not detail the full reaction chart for every category. Without that chart, it would be misleading to present a complete set of water reactions as though they were verified by this source. The practical point for readers is simpler: within the story, category identification is tied to Nen practice; outside the story, no water test or online quiz can establish a real aura affinity.

If “choose” means choosing a favorite, use the categories as a guide to the ability fantasy you enjoy. There is no objectively best type established by the official glossary. A preference can be about a fictional character concept, a playful quiz answer, or a role-play choice; it does not have to be treated as a claim about a person’s true nature.

- Choose the fantasy, not the perceived prestige. Decide whether you enjoy direct reinforcement, outward projection, altered aura, created tools, control, or an unusual exception. The official source does not crown one category as strongest.
- Consider affinity and learning relationships. If you are designing a fictional character, think about how the home category relates to adjacent and opposite categories on the diagram. The official information supports a difference in ease, not an absolute prohibition or a numerical prediction.
- Separate canon from interpretation. An official in-world rule, a character’s opinion, and a fan quiz’s personality guess are different kinds of claims. Keep them labeled accordingly.
For a quick decision, choose the type whose function best matches the ability you would most like to see. If you cannot decide between two, compare what each one does rather than asking which is “better”: Enhancement strengthens; Emission projects; Transmutation changes aura’s properties; Conjuration materializes an object; Manipulation controls; Specialization covers what the others do not. That comparison is a preference tool, not a diagnosis.

What personality quizzes can—and cannot—tell you
Fan-made Nen quizzes often borrow personality descriptions associated with Hisoka to guess a category. The reviewed AnimeQuiz page frames questions such as “What is my Nen type?” and “How accurate is a Nen type quiz?” and explicitly treats the personality method as non-scientific. That is appropriate: a quiz can produce an entertaining answer for discussion, but its result is not a measurement of an actual Nen affinity.
When taking one, treat the outcome as a fan interpretation. The quiz may be useful if it helps you think about which ability concept you like, but a personality profile cannot verify the fictional category system in a real person. The official identification method is part of the story’s aura-based world, not a real diagnostic test. No relevant named statistic about reader preference or quiz accuracy is established by the sources cited here.
Where the manga fits
Readers who want to explore the story’s treatment of Nen can consult officially listed Hunter x Hunter manga editions on VIZ Media’s series catalog. The catalog establishes that editions and volumes are listed, but it does not by itself establish which exact volume contains the Nen introduction. Use the catalog to find available editions rather than relying on an unverified volume number for that material.

Canon does not present Nen affinity as a choice a person makes. For a fan, the sensible choice is the category whose function and character fantasy appeal most: strengthening, projecting, changing aura, creating an object, controlling, or inventing an ability outside those groups. A quiz can be fun, but it cannot prove a real Nen type, and the official source establishes no universally best category.
