Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn AMD Radeon card can work normally for display output and still remain invisible to an AI application. Display detection, ROCm compute support, framework enumeration and application support are separate checks. The reliable fix is to identify the exact GPU, operating system, driver, ROCm release, framework and application version, then test those layers in order. A mismatch at any layer can prevent detection even when the card appears healthy in the desktop.
What “not detected” actually means
“AMD GPU not detected” can describe several different failures:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The operating system cannot see the hardware. This is a device, driver, firmware or physical-connection problem.
- The operating system sees the card, but the compute runtime does not. The installed driver, ROCm release, GPU architecture or permissions may be incompatible.
- ROCm can access the card, but the framework cannot enumerate it. The framework build, runtime version or supported device list may exclude that combination.
- The framework sees the card, but the AI application does not use it. The application may support only particular framework builds, architectures or operating systems, or may require its own setting to select an accelerator.
A working display driver proves only that the graphics stack can draw images. It does not prove that a specific AI application supports the same GPU through its compute stack. Treat each layer as a separate test rather than assuming that one successful check proves the others.
Start by recording the complete configuration
Before changing packages or drivers, write down the details below and copy the complete error message. Compatibility is configuration-specific, so a fix that is correct for one Radeon model or operating-system release may be wrong for another.

| Item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| AI application | Name, exact version and installation method | Applications often support a narrower set of frameworks and GPUs than ROCm itself. |
| GPU | Exact Radeon model and, where shown, architecture | ROCm support is architecture- and model-specific. |
| Operating system | Linux or Windows, distribution or edition, and release | The supported combinations and installation steps differ by platform. |
| Driver | Installed AMD driver version | The driver must match the operating system, GPU and ROCm release. |
| Compute runtime | ROCm version or another runtime named by the application | Runtime compatibility changes between releases. |
| Framework | Framework name and exact build or package version | A framework may not ship support for every GPU listed in a ROCm matrix. |
| Error text | Full message and when it appears | “No device,” architecture errors and permission errors point to different layers. |
Keep this record while troubleshooting. It prevents a common mistake: installing a current runtime while following commands written for a different release, or selecting instructions for a similar but unsupported GPU.
Check the official compatibility boundaries first
AMD’s ROCm 10.1.0 compatibility matrix, dated August 26, 2026, covers Linux and Windows and lists support by hardware and system environment. Use it as a release-specific lookup, not as a general promise that every Radeon card works with every AI program.
- Find the exact GPU model in the ROCm 10.1.0 matrix.
- Confirm that your operating system and release are listed for that model.
- Check the driver requirements shown for that combination.
- Confirm that the ROCm version you intend to run is the one covered by the entry.
- Open the AI application’s own requirements and verify its supported framework, operating system and hardware.
The last step is essential. The AMD matrix establishes ROCm compatibility; it does not establish that a third-party application supports every matrix-listed GPU. An application can reject a card that the runtime itself supports because it was built for a different framework release, architecture set or operating system.
Do not use an old getting-started command simply because it appears in a search result. AMD’s Radeon ROCm getting-started material displays commands using ROCm 6.1.3 as historical examples. Those commands are not current installation instructions for ROCm 10.1.0. Follow the release-matched guide for the version you are installing.
Use a layered test to locate the failing component
Test in this order and stop at the first layer that fails. This avoids repeatedly reinstalling the application when the problem is actually a driver or permission issue.
1. Operating-system layer
Confirm that the operating system lists the AMD card and loads an AMD driver. If the device is absent here, an AI framework cannot discover it. Resolve the hardware, firmware, operating-system or driver problem first, using the instructions for your specific platform.
2. AMD compute-runtime layer
Confirm that the installed ROCm runtime recognizes the model and architecture. A card can be visible for display while the compute runtime rejects it because the model, operating system, driver or ROCm release is outside the supported combination.

3. Framework layer
Check whether the framework used by the AI application can enumerate an AMD device through the installed runtime. Verify the framework version and its AMD support notes; do not assume that a framework package built for one ROCm release will work unchanged with another.
4. Application layer
Finally, check the application’s device-selection setting, supported backends and version-specific requirements. If the framework enumerates the GPU but the application does not, the remaining fault is usually in application support or configuration rather than basic hardware detection.
When the ROCm Runfile Installer says the GPU is not detected or the wrong architecture is selected
This section applies specifically to AMD’s ROCm Runfile Installer workflow. It is not a universal command sequence for every ROCm package or distribution.
Inspect what the installer detects
The Runfile Installer guide directs users to run gfx=show when the installer reports no GPU or selects the wrong architecture. Use the command form documented for the installer build you downloaded. Review the reported GPU and architecture before continuing.
Specify the architecture when automatic selection is wrong
If detection identifies the card incorrectly, manually specify the correct architecture using the installer’s documented option and syntax. The exact option can vary by installer release, so copy it from the guide for your installed build rather than adapting an example from another version. Selecting an architecture that does not match the physical GPU can leave the runtime installed but unusable.
Recheck the release and target system
Before rerunning the installer, compare the GPU, operating system and driver with the ROCm compatibility matrix. An installer cannot make an unsupported combination supported; manual architecture selection only addresses detection or selection within the Runfile workflow.
Fix common Runfile installation problems
AMD’s Runfile troubleshooting documentation identifies several causes of a runtime that installs but cannot use the GPU.

Missing dependencies
Validate the dependencies required by the Runfile release and install any that are missing. Dependency names and commands are release- and distribution-specific, so use the checklist shipped with that installer. A successful installer exit does not guarantee that every runtime library needed by the framework is present.

If the installation completed without its post-install configuration, run postrocm as directed by the Runfile guide. This remedy belongs to the Runfile workflow; it should not be treated as a generic repair command for package-manager installations or unrelated frameworks.
GPU access permissions
ROCm may fail to access a card when the account lacks the documented video or render permissions. Check the group membership and device-node access rules described in the Runfile guide for your operating system. After changing group membership, log out and back in so the new session receives the updated groups.
Conflicting architecture installations
Inspect the architectures already installed by the Runfile process. Multiple or conflicting architecture installations can cause the runtime to select the wrong components. Remove or correct the conflicting installation using the release’s documented procedure, then retest before changing the AI application.
Install a matching driver and ROCm release
When the matrix shows that your current driver or ROCm version is not supported, install the combination specified for the target GPU and operating system. AMD’s “Install AMD ROCm 10.1.0” guide provides system-specific routes; use the route for your platform rather than copying a command from an older article.
- Choose the operating system and release that match the machine.
- Confirm the GPU appears in the applicable compatibility entry.
- Install the driver version required for that entry.
- Install the matching ROCm components using the 10.1.0 instructions, or the release-specific instructions for the version your application requires.
- Complete any reboot, environment, group-membership or post-install step explicitly required by that guide.
- Retest the operating-system, runtime, framework and application layers in that order.
Do not mix packages from different ROCm releases unless the application’s documentation explicitly says that the combination is supported. A partial upgrade can leave libraries, architecture components and framework bindings from different release families.
Diagnose by symptom
| Observed symptom | Most useful next check | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The card is absent from the operating system | Resolve the OS, driver or hardware detection issue | The failure is below ROCm and the AI application. |
| The Runfile installer reports no GPU | Use gfx=show and verify the installer’s architecture selection |
The Runfile may be detecting no device or the wrong architecture. |
| The installer selected the wrong architecture | Manually specify the architecture documented for that installer build | Automatic selection needs correction, provided the combination is supported. |
| ROCm installs but cannot access the GPU | Check dependencies, runfile post-install configuration and video/render permissions |
The runtime may be present but blocked by setup or access rights. |
| The framework lists no AMD device | Verify framework build, ROCm version and the matrix entry | The framework/runtime pairing or hardware support may be missing. |
| The framework lists the GPU but the app does not | Read the application’s backend and device-selection requirements | The remaining limitation is application-specific. |
| It worked after an upgrade and then stopped | Compare the old and new driver, ROCm, framework and application versions | A release change may have moved the setup outside a supported combination. |
How to retest without losing the diagnostic trail
Make one change at a time and record the result. A useful test log contains the date, change made, versions, command or UI setting used, exact output and whether the next layer passed.

- After a driver change: confirm the operating system still lists the exact Radeon model.
- After a ROCm change: verify that the runtime recognizes the model and architecture.
- After a framework change: check device enumeration before launching a full model or workload.
- After an application change: verify that its selected backend is AMD/ROCm rather than a CPU-only mode.
If a test fails earlier than before, revert the last change or restore the documented matching versions. This isolates regressions without obscuring the original error with several simultaneous package changes.

Confusing display support with compute support
A desktop that renders normally demonstrates display functionality only. It does not establish ROCm or application support.

Checking only the GPU name
The same model can have different outcomes on different operating-system releases, drivers, ROCm versions and framework builds. Always evaluate the full tuple: GPU, architecture, operating system, driver, ROCm release, framework and application.
Using a historical command unchanged
Commands shown for ROCm 6.1.3 are historical examples. Current installation prerequisites and package names can differ in ROCm 10.1.0 and later releases.
Applying Runfile advice to another installation method
gfx=show, postrocm and the Runfile permission remedies are documented for AMD’s Runfile Installer. Package-manager or application-bundled installations may require different procedures.
Changing several layers at once
Replacing the driver, ROCm, framework and application together makes it impossible to tell which change solved or caused the problem. Work upward from the operating system and keep a test log.

Not every detection failure is repairable. If the exact GPU and operating-system combination is absent from the applicable ROCm matrix, or the AI application explicitly excludes that hardware or platform, installing more packages will not create official support. In that case, use a supported software and hardware combination documented by the application and AMD for your system, or run the workload on a supported backend.
Best Value
Also distinguish “not officially supported” from “not yet tested.” If neither AMD’s matrix nor the application’s requirements names your exact combination, avoid treating community workarounds as guaranteed fixes. They may work for one release and fail after an update, and they can leave you without a supported troubleshooting path.
What information to provide when asking for help
A concise, reproducible report is more useful than “my AMD GPU is not detected.” Include:
- Exact Radeon model and architecture, if known.
- Operating system, edition or distribution, and version.
- Driver version.
- ROCm or other compute-runtime version.
- Framework and application versions.
- Whether the operating system sees the card.
- Whether the runtime and framework enumerate it.
- The complete error text.
- Whether the installation used AMD’s Runfile Installer or another method.
- Any change immediately preceding the failure.
Those details let support staff compare the real configuration with the correct AMD matrix entry and the application’s requirements instead of guessing from the GPU brand alone.

Can an AMD GPU work for gaming and still fail in an AI application?
Yes. Gaming and desktop display support do not prove that the GPU, driver, ROCm release, framework and AI application form a supported compute combination.
Is ROCm 10.1.0 support the same on Linux and Windows?
The ROCm 10.1.0 matrix covers both platforms, but support is listed by exact hardware and system environment. Check the entry for your operating-system release rather than assuming parity.
What should I do first when the Runfile installer says no GPU?
Use the Runfile guide’s gfx=show check, review the detected architecture and follow that installer release’s documented manual-selection syntax if necessary.
Why might permissions matter after a successful installation?
The runtime can be installed while the user account still lacks the documented video or render access needed to open the GPU device. Apply the guide’s permission fix and start a new login session after group changes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I install a different graphics card to solve detection?
Not without checking compatibility first. The evidence-based first step is to match the existing GPU, operating system, driver, ROCm release, framework and application against their official requirements; a hardware purchase may not address a software or permission mismatch.
