First identify what “switching” means
Watch the exact moment the unwanted app appears. Android Auto is a phone-to-car interface, so the visible result can be similar even when the trigger is different.

Stop music from starting when Android Auto connects
If the unwanted app starts without a voice command, check Android Auto’s startup behavior on the phone. Google’s Android Auto driving guidance places these controls in the phone’s system Settings, although manufacturers use different menu names.

- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Use Settings search for Android Auto. If you browse manually, a documented route is Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto. The wording and location can differ by phone maker and Android version.
- Open the Android Auto settings page and look for startup, connection or media options.
- Turn off the option that allows music to play automatically on connection, if that option is present. The exact label is not universal, so do not assume every phone shows the same wording.
- Reconnect to the car and observe whether playback remains stopped until you deliberately start a service.
This setting addresses playback that begins merely because Android Auto connected. It does not force the assistant to use a particular music provider when you speak a command.
If the car still resumes audio
A vehicle receiver can resume a media session that was already active. Android’s media guidance tells app developers not to begin playback automatically when a car media service connects, but that guidance does not guarantee identical behavior from every existing app, phone, vehicle or head unit. If the app still appears, note whether the audio was already paused in that app before connection and whether the car is wired or wireless. That information helps distinguish Android Auto’s startup setting from head-unit resume behavior.
Keep voice requests in your preferred music app
When the switch follows a spoken request, first make the desired service available to the assistant. Google’s Android Auto media help recommends having the phone app installed and signed in before starting Android Auto.
- On the phone, confirm the preferred music app is installed.
- Open it once and sign in to the account that should be used in the car. An app that is installed but signed out may not be available for the request.
- Connect Android Auto and wait for the normal media interface to appear.
- Say a command that includes both the content and the service, such as
Play [song name] on Amazon Music. Replace the bracketed text with the actual song title; the brackets are a template, not words to say. - Check the media card and audio output. If the named service opens, repeat that explicit service wording for future requests.
Naming a service is a documented command pattern, not a promise that every language, account, region, assistant release or service supports every request identically. A title that exists in one catalog may also be unavailable in another, so confirm that the app itself can play the requested item on the phone.
Why an unnamed request can open another app
A request such as “Play my music” leaves the assistant to resolve both the content and the service. The result can depend on which apps are available, which account is signed in and which assistant experience is active. Saying “on [service name]” removes one of those decisions. It is more reliable than trying to guess a hidden default-provider control that may not exist on your combination of devices.
Google Assistant and Gemini: what can vary
Android Auto’s voice experience may be Google Assistant or Gemini. Gemini has been rolling out to users who upgraded from Assistant, and Google’s media examples include services such as YouTube Music and Spotify. Availability depends on the device, rollout status and settings.

Do not assume that instructions for one assistant apply to the other. The official material does not establish one universal path for choosing a default music provider across all Assistant and Gemini configurations. Menu labels can also change as Android Auto, the assistant and music apps update.
- Identify the active assistant on the phone before troubleshooting a voice-selection problem.
- Use the explicit service-name command regardless of which supported assistant is active.
- If one assistant handles the request differently from the other, record that fact rather than treating it as proof that Android Auto has a single global default.

Use this order so that each test answers one question instead of changing several variables at once.
1. Reproduce the trigger
Disconnect and reconnect Android Auto without speaking. Note whether audio starts and which app supplies it. Then stop playback, make a voice request without a service name, and finally repeat it with the service named. These three observations separate connection behavior from voice routing.
2. Check Android Auto’s phone settings
Search the phone’s Settings for Android Auto and inspect its startup or media options. Disable automatic music playback when the option is available. 3. Verify the preferred app’s account state

Use the documented structure “Play [song name] on [service name].” Start with a song you know is available in that service. If the command succeeds only when the service is named, the earlier behavior was request routing rather than automatic playback.

5. Compare connection conditions
Record whether the connection is wired or wireless and identify the car or head-unit model. This is diagnostic information, not a reason to buy a cable, adapter or mount. Hardware purchases do not establish a preferred app for assistant routing.
6. Document the remaining failure
If Android Auto still changes services, write down the phone model, Android version, Android Auto version, active assistant (Gemini or Google Assistant), music app, car or head-unit model, connection mode and exact trigger. Those details are necessary because behavior can differ across that combination, and no single provider-setting path is documented for all of them.
What each symptom tells you
Playback starts before any command
Prioritize the automatic music playback setting. If it is disabled and music still starts, consider whether the car is resuming an already active media session. Test with playback stopped before disconnecting, then reconnect without speaking. Avoid changing voice settings until this test is clear.

A named service is ignored
Recheck that the exact app is installed and signed in on the phone. Confirm that the spoken service name matches the app you intend to use. Try a known song and the full command pattern again. The app changes only after an unnamed request
Repeat the same request with the service included. This is the simplest way to distinguish an ambiguous request from a connection problem. Automatic-playback controls will not resolve an assistant decision made after you speak.
The media card changes but audio does not start
The card may be reflecting a different active media session even when playback is paused. Treat the event as a service-selection or resume clue: note which command preceded it, which app was last active and whether the change occurred immediately after connection.

Settings labels and version differences
Android Auto is configured from the phone, but the route is not identical on every handset. Google documents a path through Connected devices and Connection preferences; a phone maker may place Android Auto elsewhere or rename a section.
