Update Jetpack from WP Admin > Plugins only after confirming that a recent backup of your database and site files can be restored. Review the offered release information, choose Update now for a manual update or enable Jetpack’s auto-update control when it is available, then test the public site and the Jetpack features your site actually uses. If the update fails, use your rollback plan first and isolate conflicts in staging or session-only Troubleshooting mode rather than experimenting on the live site.
Why a Jetpack update needs a recovery plan
Jetpack is a plugin, so its update changes code that runs alongside WordPress core, your theme, your other plugins, and the hosting environment. An update can complete successfully in the dashboard while exposing a conflict on a page, in the editor, during checkout, or in a Jetpack-powered feature. A backup does not prevent a problem, but it gives you a way to return to the previous working state.

Jetpack recommends staying current and supports both manual updates and automatic updates. The safest choice is not simply the route with the fewest clicks. It is the route you can monitor and recover from: manual updating gives you a deliberate review point, while automatic updating reduces the chance that routine maintenance is forgotten. Either route requires a usable backup or rollback method.

What to check before you click Update now
Confirm that the backup is complete and restorable
Check that your most recent backup includes both the WordPress database and the site files. A database-only copy may not restore plugin files, uploads, or configuration; a files-only copy may not restore posts, settings, or orders. Know where the backup is stored, who can restore it, and how the restoration is performed. If your host provides snapshots or rollback, confirm the snapshot date and the exact site it covers.

Check the current site before changing it
Open the public site in a private browser window and note the pages and actions that matter: the home page, navigation, contact forms, login, search, comments, ecommerce or membership flows, and any Jetpack feature you rely on. If a problem appears after the update, this baseline helps you distinguish a new regression from an existing issue.
Write down the current Jetpack version and any warnings shown on the Plugins screen. Do not assume that a clean-looking dashboard means every feature is healthy; check the features your visitors use.
Review the offered release information
In WP Admin > Plugins, expand the Jetpack update notice or open its version details before applying it. Read the listed changes and any compatibility notes. Release notes and changelog feeds can provide additional context when a change affects a feature you use. The update screen is the authoritative offer for your installation; current versions and available controls can differ between sites.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck who controls updates
If the update control is labelled Managed by Host, or the auto-update switch is missing, your hosting provider may control plugin updates. A site administrator cannot override a host-managed setting from the normal Plugins screen. Ask the host when Jetpack is updated, whether it tests updates on a staging copy, and how to request a rollback.
WordPress.org documents plugin and theme auto-update controls for WordPress 5.5 and later. Older WordPress installations may not show the same controls, and a host can still replace or restrict them.

How to update Jetpack manually in WP Admin
Manual updating is the clearest option when you want to inspect the release and watch the site immediately afterward.
- Complete the recovery check. Confirm the backup or host snapshot contains the database and files and that the restore route is available.
- Sign in as an administrator. Open your WordPress dashboard and select Plugins in the left-hand menu.
- Find Jetpack. Locate the Jetpack plugin row and look for an update notice. If no update is offered, do not download a random package or force an installation; investigate the conditions in the troubleshooting section below.
- Read the version details. Open the offered changes, release notes, or changelog information. Confirm that the update is intended for the plugin installed on this site.
- Apply the update. Select Update now and keep the dashboard window open until WordPress reports completion. Do not refresh repeatedly, close the browser during a file operation, or start another plugin update at the same time.
- Check the result in WP Admin. Confirm that Jetpack is active, the update notice has cleared, and no new error or fatal-error message appears.
- Test the public site. Open the front end in a private window and exercise the site-specific checks listed in your baseline. Test the Jetpack features that matter to your site, not just the dashboard status.
- Record what changed. Note the date, installed version, backup used, and any unusual message. A short change record makes a later rollback or conflict investigation faster.
How Jetpack automatic updates work
Most plugins expose an auto-update control in the Plugins screen. If Jetpack shows one, selecting it allows WordPress to apply future Jetpack updates without a separate manual click for each release. This reduces routine maintenance, but it does not remove the need for backups or monitoring.
- Open WP Admin > Plugins.
- Find Jetpack and select its Enable auto-updates control, if displayed.
- Check whether WordPress confirms that automatic updates are enabled.
- Keep a current backup and review the site after scheduled maintenance or when you receive an update notification.
Automatic updates are scheduled through WordPress Cron. If an update that should have run does not appear, inspect Tools > Site Health for Cron-related errors and follow the resolution shown there. A disabled, blocked, or failing Cron system can prevent scheduled updates even when the auto-update switch is on.
When the control says Managed by Host, the host—not your WordPress administrator account—sets the policy. The practical next step is to check the host’s update and rollback process rather than repeatedly clicking a disabled control.
Manual versus automatic updating
| Consideration | Manual update | Automatic update |
|---|---|---|
| Control | You choose when to apply the offered version after reading its details. | WordPress applies the update on its schedule when the control is available. |
| Attention required | Requires an administrator to visit Plugins and start the update. | Less routine attention, but you still need backups and post-update checks. |
| Host policy | May be unavailable or restricted when the host manages plugin updates. | May be disabled, replaced, or controlled by the host. |
| Recovery readiness | Easy to pair with a backup immediately before the change. | Still needs a recent backup and a way to notice and reverse a failed change. |
| Best fit | Important sites, major releases, or environments where you want a review and monitoring window. | Routine maintenance on a well-backed-up site with working Cron and dependable monitoring. |
When to use staging instead of updating production
A staging site is a separate copy where you can apply Jetpack and exercise the site before touching the public installation. It takes additional setup time and may not perfectly reproduce external services, traffic, or scheduled jobs, but it gives you a safer place to discover theme and plugin conflicts.

| Approach | Visitor impact | Conflict detection | Additional work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update the live site directly | Visitors can encounter a problem while the update or testing is under way. | Conflicts are discovered on the production environment. | Fastest setup, but requires a strong backup and immediate monitoring. |
| Update a staging copy first | Visitors continue using the existing production site while you test. | Lets you exercise the copied theme, plugins, and Jetpack features before release. | Requires a current copy, test credentials, and a process for promoting or repeating the change. |
| Use session-only Troubleshooting mode | Visitors keep seeing the normal site; only your logged-in session changes. | Lets you disable plugins or switch themes to identify a conflict without changing the public experience. | Requires careful, controlled testing and cache clearing when results appear inconsistent. |
For a high-risk change, test the update on staging first. If staging is unavailable, session-only Troubleshooting mode is a lower-impact diagnostic option, but it is not a substitute for a backup or a full staging test.

WordPress may report a successful file update even when a feature has changed behavior. Use a short, repeatable checklist immediately after Jetpack finishes:
- Load the home page and at least one representative internal page in a private window.
- Check the site’s main navigation, search, forms, comments, login, and any checkout or membership flow.
- Open the Jetpack settings and verify the specific services your site uses, such as sharing, statistics, backups, security, or performance features.
- Publish or preview a test item only if your workflow allows it, and confirm that the expected Jetpack connection or publishing behavior remains intact.
- Check browser-console or server-error logs if a page is blank, slow, or missing a component.
- Clear the site, page, object, CDN, or browser cache when an old asset or stale response makes the result look inconsistent. Retest in a private window after clearing the relevant cache.
There is no single official post-update test list that fits every site. Your checklist should reflect the Jetpack functions and visitor journeys that are actually important to your installation.
Troubleshoot a Jetpack update that did not work
No update appears in Plugins
First refresh the Plugins screen and read any status message. Confirm that Jetpack is installed and active, then check the site’s WordPress and PHP environment, filesystem permissions, available disk space, and host policy. Compatibility depends on the local environment, themes, other plugins, and host configuration; there is no universal Jetpack minimum-version matrix that can guarantee an update for every site.
If the control is host-managed, contact the host. If the site is on an old WordPress release or has an unusual deployment process, update through the method required by that environment rather than uploading an unverified package.

Automatic update did not run
Open Tools > Site Health and look for Cron errors. WordPress Cron schedules automatic plugin updates, so a blocked loopback request, disabled scheduled events, or another Cron fault can stop the task. Resolve the specific error shown by Site Health, then wait for the next scheduled attempt or use the manual Plugins procedure after confirming your backup.
If Jetpack is managed by the host, verify the host’s schedule and notification policy instead of changing WordPress Cron settings blindly.
The update reports an error or leaves Jetpack inactive
Do not repeatedly retry while the cause is unknown. Capture the exact dashboard message, check available disk space and permissions, and confirm whether another maintenance task is running. If the site is still usable, take a fresh backup of its current state before further changes. If the update left the site broken, use the known-good backup or host rollback according to your recovery procedure.
The site behaves differently after updating
Determine whether the problem affects every visitor or only your browser. Test in a private window and clear relevant caches. If the issue remains, roll back when the change is causing a serious outage, then investigate the conflict on staging or in session-only Troubleshooting mode.

A Jetpack feature is incompatible
Check Jetpack’s current known-issues guidance for the feature and environment involved. Known-issue details change, and a documented conflict may require an update from the theme or plugin developer rather than a Jetpack setting change. Keep the affected feature disabled or rolled back if it threatens core site functions, and report the reproducible conflict to the relevant developer with the WordPress, PHP, theme, plugin, and Jetpack versions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to roll back safely
Rollback is appropriate when the update causes a serious regression that you cannot isolate quickly. Use the recovery method you verified before updating:
- Put the site in the least disruptive maintenance state available and record the symptoms, timestamps, and error messages.
- Restore the pre-update backup or host snapshot, following the provider’s documented process.
- Confirm that both database and files have returned to the same point in time; mixing a newer database with older files, or the reverse, can create new inconsistencies.
- Test the public site and Jetpack features again.
- Keep the update disabled while investigating. Reproduce the issue on staging or in Troubleshooting mode, then check known issues and developer guidance before attempting another production update.
A rollback restores the previous state; it does not identify the conflict. Preserve logs and a copy of the failed state when your host or developer needs evidence.

Environment and compatibility checks
Jetpack’s behavior is influenced by more than the plugin’s own files. Before a major maintenance window, verify:
- WordPress core is maintained within the version range supported by your host and other plugins.
- The PHP version and server configuration meet the requirements shown for your installation.
- The active theme and critical plugins are maintained and do not have open conflicts with the Jetpack features you use.
- The host permits outbound connections, loopback requests, scheduled events, and the filesystem operations required by WordPress updates.
- There is sufficient disk space for WordPress to download, unpack, and replace plugin files.
These checks do not establish a universal compatibility guarantee. Treat the update offer, your host’s policy, and the site’s own test results as the decision evidence for that installation.
Quick Recap
A repeatable maintenance routine
For a manually maintained site
- Review Jetpack release information and any known issues relevant to your features.
- Confirm a restorable database-and-files backup.
- Update on staging when the site is important or the change is risky.
- Apply the update from WP Admin > Plugins > Update now during a monitored window.
- Run the site-specific front-end and Jetpack checks, then record the result.
For a site using automatic updates
- Keep the auto-update control enabled only when your host permits it and your recovery process is reliable.
- Monitor WordPress notifications, host alerts, and Site Health for failed scheduled events.
- Inspect the public site and important Jetpack features after an update notification or maintenance window.
- Investigate Cron errors promptly instead of assuming the next attempt will succeed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Updating without a tested recovery path: a backup that cannot be restored is not a practical rollback.
- Ignoring the version details: reading the offered changes can reveal a feature or compatibility concern before production is changed.
- Assuming auto-update means no monitoring: scheduled updates still depend on Cron and can expose conflicts without anyone watching.
- Testing only while logged in: administrator sessions can hide cache, permission, or front-end problems that visitors experience.
- Changing several components at once: updating Jetpack, the theme, and multiple plugins together makes the cause of a regression difficult to isolate.
- Clearing every cache repeatedly: clear the cache relevant to the symptom, then retest consistently so you can tell whether the change helped.
- Overriding host controls: a “Managed by Host” setting signals that the host’s process must be followed.
Decision guide: which update path fits your site?
| Site situation | Safer next step | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Personal or low-traffic site with a current, restorable backup | Manual update with immediate checks, or auto-update if Cron is healthy. | Either route can be reasonable when recovery and monitoring are available. |
| Business, membership, publishing, or ecommerce site | Stage first when possible; otherwise use a monitored manual update. | A visitor-facing regression can have a larger operational cost. |
| Host-managed plugin controls | Follow the host’s schedule and rollback process. | The dashboard cannot override the host policy. |
| Automatic updates enabled but not running | Inspect Tools > Site Health for Cron errors, then use manual updating after backup. | WordPress Cron is part of the scheduling path. |
| Update causes a visible outage | Rollback first, then isolate the conflict in staging or session-only Troubleshooting mode. | Restoring service is more urgent than diagnosing on production. |
Final checklist
- Recent backup covers database and files.
- Restore or host rollback procedure is known and accessible.
- Jetpack release information has been reviewed.
- Host-managed restrictions and WordPress version are understood.
- Manual or automatic route has been chosen deliberately.
- WordPress Cron is healthy if automatic updates are enabled.
- Front-end pages and important Jetpack features have been tested afterward.
- Any regression has been rolled back or isolated without making unrelated live changes.
