AI data centers can affect smartphone prices and availability indirectly: they increase demand for memory products and manufacturing capacity, which can tighten supply and raise costs for memory components used in phones. The effects are not automatic or equal across brands and models. A phone maker might absorb higher costs, charge more, offer less RAM or storage at a similar price, or limit production.
How demand from AI data centers reaches smartphones
AI servers need high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DRAM and enterprise solid-state storage. Memory manufacturers have shifted some capacity and investment toward these higher-value products. That can constrain supply and lift prices across memory markets that also serve consumer electronics, according to IDC.

This is an indirect supply-chain effect—not a case of AI accelerators and phones competing for identical memory parts. Phones principally use mobile DRAM, such as LPDDR, as working memory, and NAND flash for persistent storage. IDC and suppliers describe both AI-oriented products and mobile memory in their disclosures: see Micron, SK hynix and Samsung Semiconductor.

In its September 30, 2026 update, TrendForce said mobile DRAM allocations remained tight, rising costs and depleted low-cost inventories continued to weigh on smartphone production, and mobile DRAM prices were still trending upward. It expected the pace of increases to moderate in 4Q26. For eMMC and UFS phone storage, brands were relying on existing inventories during 4Q26, limiting incremental procurement.

TrendForce also projected 4Q26 contract-price increases of 10–15% quarter over quarter for conventional DRAM and 15–20% for NAND Flash. Those are forecasts for memory contract prices, not predictions that phone retail prices will rise by the same amounts.
IDC’s February 2026 forecast projected a 12.9% decline in global smartphone shipments in 2026, followed by 1.9% growth in 2027. IDC said memory-supply challenges could persist throughout 2026 and likely well into 2027. These are dated forecasts, not final shipment results. Separately, IDC’s 2025 outlook estimated 2026 supply growth of 16% for DRAM and 17% for NAND—both below historical norms.

What this could mean for phone prices and configurations
Memory is a meaningful part of a phone’s cost. IDC estimated it can account for 15–20% of the bill of materials for a mid-range smartphone and around 10–15% for a high-end flagship. These are market-level estimates; actual shares vary by design.

- Raise the price: pass some component-cost increases on to buyers.
- Absorb the cost: accept a lower margin, at least temporarily.
- Change the configuration: sell a model with less RAM or storage at the same price or more. IDC gave the example of a shift from 12GB RAM and 256GB storage to 8GB and 128GB.
- Adjust production or product mix: delay or reduce output, or emphasize models that are more viable under tighter supply.
None of these responses can be assumed for every brand, region or model. A memory-market forecast does not establish what a specific phone will cost at retail.
Why some phones may be more exposed than others
Lower-priced phones can be more vulnerable because their makers often have thinner margins and less room to absorb higher component costs. IDC also notes that companies with stronger purchasing power, supplier relationships and the ability to make large commitments may secure supply more reliably. That can create differences between vendors as well as between product tiers.

To compare models, check the exact version and market: retail price, RAM, storage capacity, current stock and whether the compared versions are otherwise equivalent. How to use these forecasts when deciding when to buy
Market forecasts can explain why prices or stock might become less favorable, but they cannot tell you what a particular retailer has today. TrendForce’s latest cited outlook is dated September 30, 2026, and its 4Q26 projections concern component markets. For a purchase decision, compare current local prices and stock for the exact configurations you are considering rather than assuming every phone will rise in price.
