Why a Two-Second Response Can Point to Your Architecture

A roughly two-second response can span client, network, service, and storage time. Define the measurement boundary and use traces to find where delay accumulates before changing architecture.

A roughly two-second response is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It may reflect time spent in the client, network, application, database, or several downstream services. AI may contribute to a particular request’s delay, but the number alone cannot show that it is the cause—or that architecture is. First define what the two seconds measures, then trace where that time accumulates.

What does “two seconds” measure?

Latency depends on where the clock starts and stops. A user-perceived end-to-end measurement can include client work, network travel, service processing, and the response path. A server handler or database query measures a narrower slice. Those figures are not interchangeable.

Google’s documentation on latency points in a Spanner request distinguishes client-operation, front-end, API-request, and SQL-query latency. It also notes that some measures exclude client-to-server network time or reverse-proxy overhead. A fast query therefore does not prove that the whole request is fast, and a slow end-to-end request does not by itself prove that the database is slow.

Before investigating, record the measurement boundary and the conditions: which request or operation is timed, where timing begins and ends, and whether the figure is a single request or an aggregate. Without that definition, comparing “two seconds” across dashboards or services can lead to the wrong conclusion.

Why can architecture add latency?

A request that crosses service boundaries depends on communication as well as computation. More calls, serial dependencies, or communication across geographically distant components can add elapsed time. Google Cloud’s distributed architecture guidance identifies connectivity and geographic distance as factors affecting latency in distributed deployments.

That does not mean every extra service or distant component is necessarily the bottleneck. A request’s path and measurements matter: parallel calls, for example, do not add up in the same way as a chain of calls that must finish one after another. The trace should show which dependencies are involved and where time is actually spent.

Storage can be another part of the path. Repeated reads that reach slower storage or a downstream database may make a request slower and increase load on those systems. Caching can serve data from memory instead, but only when the application can tolerate the cache’s freshness and completeness trade-offs.

Why does a request take a long time to complete?

Use a trace to follow a slow request across its components. A distributed trace represents work as related spans, which can reveal the order of operations, dependencies, and where elapsed time accumulates. Google Cloud’s Cloud Trace overview frames tracing around questions such as why a request takes a long time and what its dependencies are.

OpenTelemetry provides a vendor-neutral set of tools and standards for collecting and exporting traces, metrics, and logs across cloud-native systems. The signals answer different questions: traces help locate time along a request path, metrics show patterns across requests or services, and logs provide event-level context. Together, they are more useful for diagnosis than a single average latency figure.

  1. Define the slow request and timing boundary. Separate user-perceived duration from client-library, server-handler, proxy, or query time.
  2. Inspect a representative slow trace. Follow its parent and child spans, note the dependency order, and identify spans that account for substantial elapsed time.
  3. Compare traces with aggregate signals. Use metrics to see whether the issue affects a broader set of requests, and logs to add context to relevant events.
  4. Test one explanation at a time. Change or investigate the component suggested by the trace, then compare the same measurement boundary under comparable conditions.

Google Cloud’s gRPC observability guidance describes using traces and client/server latency comparisons to investigate whether delay is associated with server processing or a network issue. A mismatch between client- and server-side timing can be a clue to investigate; it is not, on its own, proof of a specific network fault.

Why do some requests take longer than others?

An average can conceal a small group of much slower requests. If users are affected by those outliers, track tail behavior as well as a typical-request objective. Google Cloud’s request-based SLO guidance warns that one objective may not capture deterioration among the slowest requests and recommends adding a tail-focused SLO when that behavior matters.

The documentation gives illustrative examples—not universal targets—including “99% of requests complete in under 100 ms within a rolling one-hour window” and “99.9% of requests complete in under 1000 ms over a rolling 1 hour window.” Choose thresholds and windows to match the service’s user needs; do not treat either example as a general benchmark.

What should you change when the trace identifies a bottleneck?

If time accumulates in storage reads

Check whether the request repeatedly reads the same data and whether the trace points to slower storage or a downstream database. If so, evaluate whether a cache fits the data’s freshness requirements. Google Cloud’s Cloud Architecture Center explains that caching can reduce access to slower underlying storage and lower downstream database load. Cached data can also be stale or incomplete, so the application must be able to handle that trade-off.

If time accumulates between services or regions

Review which components communicate, how the request is routed, and where those components are deployed. The distributed architecture guidance identifies network connectivity and geographic distance as latency influences. Use the trace and deployment context to determine whether placement or topology is relevant to this request; do not infer it from total duration alone.

If the request makes many downstream calls

Use the span sequence to distinguish calls that run serially from those that overlap. If the trace shows repeated or unnecessary work, consider whether the request path can avoid it or perform work differently. Treat any redesign as a hypothesis to validate against measurements, not as a remedy that applies to every service.

If a query is slow

Examine query-level evidence separately from total API time. A query’s duration and the overall request duration describe different boundaries; tracing helps show whether the query dominates or is only one part of the elapsed time.

How to tell whether the architecture is the problem

The useful question is not whether two seconds is “an AI problem” or “an architecture problem” in the abstract. It is which measured part of this request consumes the time, and whether that part is caused by model work, application processing, network communication, storage, or dependency ordering. The cited Google Cloud and OpenTelemetry documentation describes ways to measure and reason about distributed latency; it cannot identify the cause for a system without that system’s traces, workload, deployment geography, and timing boundaries.
