A Mac can detect a Thunderbolt connection or enclosure without detecting the PCIe card inside it. Check the connection and accessory approval first, then use System Information to identify which layer is missing. If the enclosure appears but the card does not, investigate card seating, power, and compatibility among the card, enclosure, Mac, macOS, and driver.
First, identify the exact hardware and software
Compatibility depends on the complete setup, not just whether a product says “Thunderbolt compatible.” Before troubleshooting, note:

- Your Mac model and chip family
- Your macOS version and build
- The enclosure’s make, model, and Thunderbolt generation
- The PCIe card’s exact model and revision
- The card’s driver and firmware versions, if applicable
Use those details when checking manufacturer compatibility information or contacting support. Sonnet’s compatibility chart illustrates why exact combinations matter, but its testing is not a guarantee for every card or enclosure: Sonnet’s compatibility guide.
Check whether macOS has approved the accessory
On Apple silicon Mac laptops, a newly connected or unrecognized Thunderbolt accessory may need approval before it can connect. Unlock the Mac and respond to the accessory prompt. If you previously selected “Don’t Allow,” reconnect the accessory and approve it when prompted. Apple documents the relevant control in System Settings > Privacy & Security: Allow accessories to connect to your Mac.

Rule out power, cable, and connection problems
- Confirm enclosure power. Make sure the chassis is switched on and connected to its required power supply. Check that its Thunderbolt cable is firmly seated at both ends.
- Use a suitable Thunderbolt cable. A connector that fits is not proof that the cable supports the Thunderbolt connection your enclosure requires. Check the enclosure manufacturer’s cable requirements.
- Connect directly to the Mac. Temporarily remove docks and other daisy-chained devices so the enclosure is the only device on that connection.
- Check software and firmware requirements. Follow the enclosure and card makers’ instructions for applicable updates, and restart or reopen the app that uses the card.
These are among Apple’s recommended checks for a connected device that does not work: Apple’s accessory troubleshooting steps.
Use System Information to find the missing layer
Check for the enclosure and card separately. Hold Option while opening the Apple menu, then choose System Information. Look for the enclosure or Thunderbolt link in the Thunderbolt hardware section, and check the PCI section for the card or endpoint where applicable. Apple recommends checking System Information to see whether connected hardware appears; its developer documentation describes PCIe connectivity over Thunderbolt: Apple’s connected-device checks and Apple’s PCI card and DriverKit documentation.

| What System Information shows | Where to focus |
|---|---|
| Neither the enclosure/link nor the card appears | Accessory approval, Mac port, cable, enclosure power, or an enclosure fault |
| The enclosure or Thunderbolt link appears, but the card does not | Card seating, auxiliary power, card-to-chassis support, or macOS driver support |
| The card appears, but an app cannot use it | The card’s driver, firmware, supported features, and the app’s own requirements |
If the enclosure appears but the card does not
Reseat the card and check its power needs
With the enclosure safely powered down, follow its manual to check that the card is fully seated in the correct slot. Confirm that the card fits the chassis and that any required auxiliary power connectors are attached. Also check the manufacturer’s cooling requirements. These are checks to make against the actual hardware—not proof that any one of them caused the failure.

Verify the exact card model and revision against the enclosure maker’s compatibility data, then check the card maker’s support notes for your Mac architecture and macOS version. Support can depend on enclosure generation and operating system as well as the card itself. For example, Sonnet’s published Allegro support entries are specific to those cards, listed macOS versions, and chassis generations; they should not be treated as universal or current compatibility claims for other products: Sonnet Allegro compatibility information.

- Thunderbolt 3/4 PCIe Expansion Chassis: Instantly add a PCIe 3.0 x4 card (up to 145mm length) to any Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB4 enabled laptop. This chassis provides 40Gbps bandwidth for video capture, 10GbE, or NVMe SSDs.
- Pro-Grade Card Compatible: Designed for demanding workflows. Ideal for video capture (Blackmagic DeckLink series), audio processing cards, high-speed 10GbE Ethernet, or expanding storage with an NVMe SSD adapter card.
- Silent, All-Aluminum Design: The rugged aluminum chassis acts as a heatsink for 100% passive, 0dB cooling. Its silent operation is perfect for noise-sensitive environments like recording studios and editing bays.
- Full-Featured I/O Hub: The dock itself is driverless (plug-and-play) on macOS, Windows & Linux. Features a dedicated DP 1.4 port for an external monitor and a second TB port for daisy-chaining other devices.
- Dual Thunderbolt Ports with 15W PD: Features two Thunderbolt 3/4 ports (40Gbps) for high-speed data. Both ports provide 15W Power Delivery to power accessories or top-off devices, while the chassis provides 30W of power to the installed PCIe card.
Bandwidth can also be a constraint for some PCIe cards. Check the enclosure and card documentation for expected performance and requirements rather than assuming that physical connection guarantees full capability. Sonnet’s compatibility guide is one vendor example of card-specific requirements.
Confirm that macOS supports the card’s functions
Thunderbolt can carry PCIe, but that does not mean macOS includes a driver for every card or supports every proprietary feature. Common controllers and standard interfaces may use built-in drivers; a card’s additional or proprietary functions may require a driver from its manufacturer. Apple documents DriverKit for supported custom PCIe drivers on macOS 11 and later: Apple’s PCI card and DriverKit documentation.

- Dual PCIe Expansion: Add two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots to your Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB4 enabled laptop/desktop for versatile card expansion.
- High-Speed Connection: Utilize the 40Gbps Thunderbolt interface for connecting video capture cards, network adapters, NVMe storage, and more.
- Silent & Compact: Features a durable, all-aluminum design with passive cooling for silent operation. Supports cards up to 205mm x 25mm x 145mm.
- Power Included: Comes with a 60W power adapter and provides up to 30W via the PCIe slots. Includes an 8-pin cable for cards needing extra power.

Check the card manufacturer’s current driver and compatibility notes for the exact model and macOS version. Enclosure detection alone does not establish that the operating system can use the card.
