Start with the exact Mac model and PCIe card—not the enclosure. Confirm the Mac has Thunderbolt, then verify that the card supports your macOS version and fits the enclosure’s slot, size and power limits. A Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure connects a card to a Mac; it does not make every PCIe card Mac-compatible.
Check your Mac’s Thunderbolt port
USB-C describes a connector shape, not a guarantee of Thunderbolt. Look up the specifications for your exact Mac model and confirm its port type and generation using Apple’s guide to identifying Mac ports. Apple lists Thunderbolt 5 on certain Mac models introduced in 2024 or 2025 and later, and Thunderbolt 4 on other named model families; the model-specific specifications are the useful check.

Then compare the Mac’s port with the enclosure’s stated host compatibility. Do not assume that a cable or enclosure works simply because its plug fits.
Confirm that your PCIe card works with macOS
Choose the card for its job—such as capture, networking, audio/DSP or storage control—before settling on a chassis. Check the card maker’s support for your exact macOS version and the application you plan to use. Also consult the enclosure maker’s card compatibility information: the connection alone does not supply a macOS driver or guarantee that a card will function.

Sonnet’s PCIe Card Thunderbolt Compatibility Chart is one example of a manufacturer resource for checking cards. It also identifies power limitations for some cards in the single-slot Echo Express SE I, illustrating why compatibility and power need to be checked for the specific combination.
Match the card to the enclosure’s slots, dimensions and power
Compare the card’s interface and physical requirements with the exact enclosure specification. Check slot count and electrical capability, card length, height and width, and whether the card needs auxiliary power. A card that is compatible with macOS may still be too large or require more power than a chassis provides.

- Add Connectivity & Unlock Performance: Expand your computer with a high-performance PCIe card over Thunderbolt 5. Ideal external PCIe expansion for Mac, Windows, and Linux systems.
- Thunderbolt 5 to PCIe Expansion: Delivers up to 6000 MB/s bi-directional PCIe bandwidth for pro audio, video, storage, and networking cards.
- Wide PCIe 4.0 Card Compatibility: Supports half-length+ (7.75"), full-height, single-width PCIe 4.0 x8 cards—plus most cards that require a daughter card.
- Pro-Level Power & Connectivity: Includes auxiliary PCIe power for power-hungry cards. Second Thunderbolt port enables daisy-chaining and provides 15W to connected peripherals.
- Compact, Quiet & Rugged Build: Lightweight aluminum enclosure with temperature-controlled, variable-speed fan for extremely quiet cooling; perfect for desktops, studios, and on-set workflows.
For example, Sonnet says its Echo Express SE IIIe accepts three half-length+, full-height, single-width cards, or one single-width card plus one double-width card. Its three slots are PCIe 3.0 x8. Those figures describe this model, not Thunderbolt PCIe enclosures generally. Confirm the live product details against your card before buying.

- Thunderbolt 3/4 PCIe Expansion Chassis: Instantly add a PCIe 3.0 x4 card (up to 145mm length) to any Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB4 enabled laptop. This chassis provides 40Gbps bandwidth for video capture, 10GbE, or NVMe SSDs.
- Pro-Grade Card Compatible: Designed for demanding workflows. Ideal for video capture (Blackmagic DeckLink series), audio processing cards, high-speed 10GbE Ethernet, or expanding storage with an NVMe SSD adapter card.
- Silent, All-Aluminum Design: The rugged aluminum chassis acts as a heatsink for 100% passive, 0dB cooling. Its silent operation is perfect for noise-sensitive environments like recording studios and editing bays.
- Full-Featured I/O Hub: The dock itself is driverless (plug-and-play) on macOS, Windows & Linux. Features a dedicated DP 1.4 port for an external monitor and a second TB port for daisy-chaining other devices.
- Dual Thunderbolt Ports with 15W PD: Features two Thunderbolt 3/4 ports (40Gbps) for high-speed data. Both ports provide 15W Power Delivery to power accessories or top-off devices, while the chassis provides 30W of power to the installed PCIe card.
- Host connection: the Thunderbolt generations and Mac port categories the manufacturer lists.
- Included cable: confirm its compatibility and whether it is included; do not buy an extra cable by default.
- Other ports and power: check what the enclosure provides and whether the card’s power requirements are met.
- Physical setup: consider enclosure size and your tolerance for fan or operating noise, using manufacturer specifications where available.
- Model status: verify the exact SKU and whether it is current or discontinued, especially when comparing retailer listings.
The SE IIIe product page says it includes a Thunderbolt cable compatible with Thunderbolt 5, 4 and 3 computers. Sonnet’s technical specifications list host Mac port categories including Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt/USB4 and Thunderbolt 3. Sonnet marks the older Echo Express SE III as discontinued and replaced by the SE IIIe, so check the model name rather than relying on a similar-looking listing. See the SE IIIe overview and technical specifications for current details.
Keep eGPU support separate from ordinary PCIe expansion
Do not treat a generic Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure as an eGPU solution. Apple’s external graphics processor guidance describes eligible Thunderbolt 3 Macs and supported macOS, GPU and chassis combinations. It does not establish general eGPU support on Apple silicon Macs. Check Apple’s applicable guidance and the enclosure maker’s exact GPU configuration before considering an eGPU.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the Mac: look up the exact model’s Thunderbolt port and generation in its specifications.
- Identify the card: settle on the exact card model and task, then verify support for your macOS version and application.
- Check the enclosure compatibility chart: confirm the card is listed for the specific chassis and note any power restrictions.
- Compare fit and power: match the card’s dimensions, slot requirements, PCIe interface and auxiliary power needs to the chassis specifications.
- Verify connection details: check host Thunderbolt compatibility, included cable and other ports.
- Confirm the listing: check the enclosure’s exact model and current status on the manufacturer’s page.
There is no basis here to rank enclosures by throughput, noise or thermal performance: no independent, comparable benchmark for those measures is established. Use manufacturer specifications for compatibility and fit, and avoid treating product descriptions as independent performance tests.

Which PCIe cards work in a Thunderbolt enclosure on Apple silicon?
There is no blanket compatibility answer. Check the card maker’s macOS and application support and the enclosure maker’s compatibility chart for your exact card and chassis.
Do I need Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5?
Not necessarily. Check the exact Mac port and the enclosure’s stated host compatibility; connector shape alone does not establish which connection you have or need.
