If it is excessively hot, swollen, leaking, damaged, emitting an unusual smell, or behaving abnormally, stop charging and using it. If it is smoking or on fire, leave the area and call your local emergency number.
Why a power bank may get hot while charging
Charging and discharging involve electrical energy conversion, and some heat can occur. How much is acceptable depends on the device and circumstances; available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal safe temperature or a touch-based test that applies to every power bank.

Manufacturers describe specific conditions that can contribute to heat. Xiaomi says its 20,000 mAh integrated-cable power bank may heat under high-power output, environmental factors, or heavy phone use, and notes that a very low charge level can make that model heat more. Huawei says a low battery level can mean higher current through the cell and heat in its products. These explanations are model-specific; they do not establish that an unusually hot bank is safe.
Heat can also build up when a bank is on bedding or upholstery, in direct sunlight, or near another heat source. A damaged cable or connector, or heavy use of the connected phone, may contribute. Xiaomi advises checking its integrated cable and connectors and avoiding phone use during charging if heat is an issue.

What to do if your power bank is hot
If it is excessively hot or shows warning signs
Stop charging and using it. Warning signs include swelling, leakage, physical damage, an unusual smell, repeated disconnection, smoke, or other abnormal behavior. Do not keep testing it by charging it again or attaching devices. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says: “Never use a power bank that is damaged, overheating, swelling, leaking or venting gas.”
If it is warm but has no warning signs
Disconnect it if needed and let it cool naturally in a ventilated place on a stable, non-flammable surface. Do not put it in a refrigerator or try to cool it with water. Wait until it has cooled before charging again, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

If it is smoking or burning
Leave the area and call local emergency services. Do not risk injury to retrieve or carry a smoking battery. Australian ACCC guidance says to evacuate, close doors if safe, and call Triple Zero (000); use the applicable emergency number where you are.
How to reduce heat during charging
- Charge on a stable, non-flammable surface with airflow around the bank. Avoid beds, sofas, carpets, and other heat-retaining surfaces.
- Keep the bank out of direct sunlight, hot vehicles, and areas near heat or moisture.
- Use the charger and cable recommended or permitted by the manufacturer. Do not use a damaged cable, connector, or bank.
- If both the bank and connected phone are getting warm, stop heavy phone use while charging.
- Let a warm bank cool before recharging. If it repeatedly becomes excessively hot, disconnects, or shows any other warning sign, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Do not open, puncture, modify, or attempt to repair the cells yourself. Battery safety depends on components and protections working together; leave inspection and repair to the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.

Check whether your power bank has been recalled
Check the exact brand and model against current official recall notices in your country. A similar-looking product or brand name alone is not enough to confirm whether a notice applies. The examples below are U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) notices, not a complete list; recall status and remedies can change.

How to dispose of a defective or recalled power bank
Follow the recall notice, manufacturer instructions, and your local hazardous-waste authority’s directions. Do not assume that a collection point accepting ordinary batteries will take a defective lithium-ion power bank. The CPSC specifically advised that the Yiisonger units should not go in household trash, general recycling, or ordinary used-battery boxes; contact local hazardous-waste authorities before transporting a defective unit. Requirements differ by location.
