A portable power station’s capacity in watt-hours (Wh) tells you how much energy its battery is rated to store—not how much energy an appliance will receive from its AC outlet. Conversion losses, the station’s own electronics, discharge limits and operating conditions all affect usable power. And even if the battery holds enough energy for a task, the station may not be able to supply the appliance’s required watts, especially at startup.
Capacity, output and runtime describe different things
Watt-hours (Wh) measure energy: the amount stored in the battery. Watts (W) measure power: the rate at which energy is delivered. Runtime is how long a particular load can operate under particular conditions. Those figures are related, but they are not interchangeable.

For example, BLUETTI lists the EB3A at 268 Wh capacity and 600 W rated output. The first figure describes battery energy; the second describes an output limit. Neither alone promises a fixed runtime for a particular appliance. A device can exceed the station’s power limit even when the battery contains ample energy, while a device within that limit can still drain the battery quickly if it draws substantial power. When a station supplies AC power, its inverter converts battery energy into the form an appliance uses. That conversion is not lossless. The station may also reserve some energy or stop discharging before all nominal battery energy is delivered. Its display, fans, inverter and other electronics draw power as well. These factors mean that a battery’s rated Wh should not be read as an equivalent quantity of energy available to an AC appliance.

The station’s own draw matters proportionally more for a small appliance: a fixed overhead takes a larger share of a 10 W lamp’s total demand than it does of a much larger load. Generac notes that a power station uses energy for its display, fans and inverter. Generac portable power station FAQs.

Estimated runtime (hours) ≈ rated battery energy (Wh) × usable depth-of-discharge fraction × inverter efficiency ÷ (device load (W) + station self-consumption (W))
This is an estimate, not a guarantee. The usable depth-of-discharge fraction represents how much of the rated battery energy the calculation assumes is available; inverter efficiency accounts for conversion losses; and self-consumption accounts for power used by the station itself. Do not assume that one manufacturer’s values apply to another model.

What manufacturer examples show
BLUETTI’s EB3A FAQ illustrates a 100 W LED light calculation using 268 Wh capacity, 90% depth of discharge and 90% inverter efficiency, for an estimated runtime of about 2.17 hours. BLUETTI labels the result reference-only and says the simple calculation is not suitable for inductive loads such as compressors. BLUETTI EB3A FAQ and product information.
For a different model, BLUETTI’s AC200P L manual uses battery capacity × depth of discharge × inverter efficiency ÷ (load power + station self-consumption). It gives that model approximately 12 W self-consumption and inverter efficiency typically over 93%. In the manual’s example, a 40 W refrigerator load, 2,304 Wh capacity, 95% depth of discharge, 93% efficiency and 12 W station draw produce an estimated runtime of 39.1 hours. These inputs and result are specific to the manual’s model and example, not a general benchmark. The manual warns that low temperatures and excessive loads can reduce operating time. Check appliance compatibility separately from runtime
Runtime calculations answer how long a compatible load might run; they do not establish whether the station can power it. Check the station’s continuous AC output against the appliance’s operating demand. For a motor or compressor, also check startup or surge demand against the station’s surge limit: startup can require more power than ordinary running.

BLUETTI says its EB3A’s simple runtime calculation is unsuitable for compressor or other inductive loads. For such appliances, use the station and appliance specifications rather than extrapolating from a basic watt-hour calculation. BLUETTI EB3A product information.

Conditions and published runtime claims affect comparisons
Temperature and load can change actual operating time. A manufacturer’s runtime estimate is most useful when its assumptions are clear: which appliance was used, its draw, the output mode, operating temperature, discharge cutoff or reserve, and whether station self-consumption was included. Similar Wh labels do not establish equal usable AC energy.
Specifications also differ by model. EcoFlow’s E980 manual separately lists 980 Wh rated capacity, 500 W total AC discharge output, and charging and discharging temperature ranges. Those are E980-specific details, not values that apply to power stations generally. EcoFlow E980 manual.
What to compare when choosing a portable power station
Compare the appliance’s demand with the station’s output limits, then compare energy and runtime information on a like-for-like basis. If one maker publishes an estimate and another provides only a Wh rating, treat that as an information gap—not evidence that one delivers more usable AC energy.
- Battery energy: rated capacity in Wh.
- Output capability: continuous AC output in W and any surge limit in W.
- Appliance demand: average or running watts and, for motors or compressors, startup demand.
- Runtime evidence: a published usable-AC-energy figure or runtime estimate, with the test load and conditions stated.
- Calculation assumptions: whether inverter conversion, discharge reserve or cutoff, and idle or display/fan consumption are included.
- Operating conditions: permitted temperature range and any load-specific limitations.
When comparing portable power stations, judge the stated Wh capacity and output ratings alongside the maker’s runtime assumptions. Capacity by itself cannot tell you how long your particular appliance will run.
