First check which Pokémon game you’re playing: the “Mewtwo code” may not be a code at all. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the official Mewtwo reward is claimed through Mystery Gift’s Get via Internet option; it gives you Mewtwonite X and Y, which unlock an extra Mewtwo mission. The old GETY0URMEW password was for Mew—not Mewtwo—and its event ended in 2023.
Check the game and the reward before troubleshooting
A Mystery Gift code only works for the game and distribution that issued it. These two commonly confused cases have different fixes:

Claim the Mewtwo-related reward in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
The official route in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is an internet Mystery Gift, not a code-entry screen. To receive the Mega Stones:

- Connect the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet and use a profile linked to a Nintendo Account.
- Make sure Mystery Gift is available. The feature becomes available after approximately one hour of play.
- Open Mystery Gift and choose Get via Internet.
- After claiming the gift, check the Mega Stones pocket for Mewtwonite X and Y.
To add Mewtwo to your team, finish the main story, go to Lysandre Café, and start the extra side mission. Completing that mission adds Mewtwo to your team. The Pokémon Company’s announcement does not state an end date for the internet gift, so check the in-game option rather than assuming a code’s validity period applies.

Redeem a valid Scarlet or Violet code
If you have a different code issued for Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet, Nintendo’s documented redemption path is:
- Open the game’s Poké Portal.
- Select Mystery Gift, then Code/Password.
- Enter the code exactly as issued and follow the prompts.
- Check Mystery Gifts to review gifts already received, then save after receiving a gift.
Nintendo’s instructions explain how to redeem a download code in Scarlet and Violet; they do not establish that an unspecified Mewtwo code is valid for either game. For a code from another Pokémon title, use that title’s own Mystery Gift instructions. Nintendo maintains Scarlet and Violet redemption help and a Mystery Gift help index for Pokémon games.

If the code still fails
Without the exact game, error message, and issuing promotion, it is not possible to tell whether a particular code is mistyped, already used, expired, or meant for another game. Don’t assume any one of those causes from the phrase “Mewtwo code” alone.
