You can reuse an old Android phone as a fixed dashboard if it can run the app or page you need, stay connected to Wi-Fi, and receive reliable power. The setup is model-specific: choose a mount and charger for the actual phone, then use the screen-on option supported by its app, software, and management setup.
Check that the phone is suitable
Before buying accessories, verify that the phone still works reliably for this role. Open the dashboard app or web page, test its Wi-Fi connection, inspect the display and charging port, and check the battery for damage or unusual swelling. If the phone cannot run the dashboard or connect consistently, mounting it will not solve the underlying problem.

A phone wall mount is a straightforward option for a fixed dashboard; a stable shelf mount can work if you prefer not to attach anything to a wall. In either case, check the mount against the phone’s dimensions and case, if fitted. It must hold the phone securely in the chosen orientation without covering the display or pressing the side buttons.

- Check that the cable can reach the phone without being pulled tight, sharply bent, or routed where it can snag.
- Position the display where it is easy to see, while avoiding direct sunlight and other heat sources.
- Secure wall-mounted hardware to a surface that can support it; do not rely on a loose fit or an unsupported adhesive.

Match the charger and cable to your phone
Use a compatible wall charger and cable for the phone’s connector and charging requirements. Confirm both against the device manual or the manufacturer’s support information before buying. Android’s guidance for dedicated devices includes checking that a device is plugged into a power source, but it does not specify one charger or cable for every Android phone (Android Developers: Dedicated devices cookbook).

Charging methods can be model-specific. For example, Google’s Pixel Stand charging instructions apply to supported Pixel phones; they are not a universal recommendation for older Android devices. Route the cable so the connection stays seated and the mount does not pinch it. After mounting, check that the phone actually indicates it is charging.

For an ordinary app or dashboard page
Some apps can request that the display stay on while they are in use. Android Developers documents the app-level FLAG_KEEP_SCREEN_ON flag; whether you can use this behavior depends on the app. See Android Developers: Keep the screen on. If the dashboard app has no such option, check the phone’s own display settings and the app’s documentation for a supported alternative; the setting names and availability can vary by model and software version.
For a dedicated or managed device
Android’s dedicated-device cookbook documents a plugged-in stay-awake setting for managed devices. Samsung Knox also describes a policy for keeping a plugged-in device’s screen from turning off in supported kiosk configurations (Samsung Knox: How to prevent a plugged-in Android device’s screen from turning off). These are management paths, not universal consumer settings. Do not assume Knox policy controls are available on an unmanaged personal phone.

Do not confuse screen-off behavior with Always On Display
Samsung’s Always On Display guidance concerns supported Galaxy phones and tablets. An always-on display may show limited information while the screen is otherwise off; it is not necessarily the same as keeping a full dashboard app visible. Check what your particular device and dashboard need before relying on it.
Manage heat and check the setup over time
An always-lit screen has a power and heat trade-off. Android Developers warns that keeping a device’s screen on can drain the battery quickly (Keep the screen on). That warning does not give a universal battery-life estimate, so do not plan around an assumed runtime.

Follow the safety instructions for the phone’s own model and inspect it periodically during sustained use. Google’s Pixel 4a safety manual says not to leave that model where temperatures may exceed 45°C and specifically names a car dashboard and heating vent; this is Pixel 4a-specific guidance, not a threshold for every Android phone (Google Pixel 4a safety and regulatory manual).
- Check the phone and cable for excessive warmth, damage, or a loose connection.
- Make sure the battery is not swollen and the mount remains secure.
- Keep the phone away from direct sun, heaters, and other locations that could exceed its stated operating or storage limits.
- Review the device maker’s charging and safety guidance if you change the charger, mount location, or power arrangement.
If the phone’s battery or charging port appears damaged, stop using it as a permanently plugged-in dashboard until the issue has been assessed.
Set it up in a practical order
- Confirm the phone runs your chosen dashboard and maintains a Wi-Fi connection.
- Identify its exact model, Android version, charging port, and battery condition; consult its manual for charging and safety requirements.
- Choose a secure mount that fits the phone and leaves the charging port reachable.
- Buy a charger and cable compatible with that specific phone, then test charging before mounting it.
- Enable a screen-on behavior supported by the dashboard app or, if the phone is managed, by its dedicated-device or kiosk configuration.
- Mount the phone, route the cable without strain, and check that the dashboard remains visible and the phone charges.
- Monitor heat, charging, battery condition, and mount stability during use.
For a device-specific setup, the phone model, Android version, dashboard app, and whether the phone is managed are the details that determine the right mount, power accessories, and screen-on method.
