Gemini and OpenAI document overlapping but limited ways to check an image’s origin: Google’s Gemini check looks for Google AI’s SynthID watermark and compatible C2PA Content Credentials, while OpenAI documents checks for C2PA credentials and supported SynthID signals. Neither is a universal AI-image detector. A visible watermark, an embedded watermark, and provenance metadata are different things—and a missing signal does not prove an image was made by a person.
What “watermark” can mean
Three different mechanisms are often grouped under the word watermark. They can work together, but they do not provide the same information or behave the same way.

- Visible overlay: A mark displayed on the image for people to see. Google’s Gemini Apps setting controls this visible mark.
- Embedded watermark: A signal placed in the media itself and checked by compatible software. Google’s SynthID is an imperceptible embedded watermark, not a visible label.
- Provenance metadata: Information associated with a file that can record details such as origin, editing history, and AI use. C2PA Content Credentials are intended to provide this context; they are not simply another visible stamp.
Google says Gemini Apps-generated or edited AI media includes both SynthID and C2PA provenance metadata. Turning Gemini’s visible watermark setting off does not turn off either embedded layer. The comparison below is limited to the capabilities described in Google and OpenAI’s documentation. It is not a survey of every image generator: the available documentation does not establish what Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, or other services currently embed or verify.

How to check an image in Gemini
For a practical question such as “Was this image generated with AI?”, Gemini’s documented workflow checks for Google AI signals and may surface compatible provenance details. It does not establish the image’s origin across all providers.

- Open Gemini and upload the image you want to check.
- Ask whether Google AI created or edited it—for example, “Was this image generated with AI?”
- Read the result as a check for Google AI signals. If Gemini finds SynthID, Google says all or part of the image or video was created or edited by Google AI models.
- If Gemini reports compatible Content Credentials, use them as provenance context about origin, editing, or AI use—not as an independent, definitive verdict that the file is AI-generated.
Google’s help documentation says Gemini Apps supports C2PA Content Credentials version 2.2 and later from products on the C2PA Conforming Products List. Credentials from unsupported products may not be treated as valid or trusted, and Gemini Apps does not support third-party credentials whose metadata is stored remotely rather than with the media file. What SynthID does—and what it does not establish
Google DeepMind describes SynthID as an imperceptible digital watermark embedded directly in AI-generated media. For images and video, Google says it is added when the content is created and is designed not to change visual quality. The signal is intended to withstand some common modifications, including cropping, filters, frame-rate changes, and lossy compression. A positive result is evidence for the matching signal: Google says a detected SynthID indicates that all or part of the image or video was created or edited by Google AI models. It does not reveal that every part of the image is AI-made, nor does the check identify arbitrary AI origins. Google’s own qualification is explicit: “While other companies have started to adopt SynthID watermarks, Gemini can currently only recognize content created by Google AI tools.” Google Gemini Apps Help
An inconclusive result is also possible. Google says Gemini may not have enough detail to identify a watermark—for example, if content is too simple to watermark—or an edit may be too small for the check to detect. The feature’s uncertainty is meaningful: it is not equivalent to a clean bill of authenticity.

How to interpret C2PA Content Credentials
C2PA credentials provide provenance context, which can include how media was composed, its edit history, and whether AI was used. OpenAI describes them as signed metadata that can carry issuer and AI-use details. A credential can help explain a file’s documented history, but it is not the same as an AI detector. Google cautions that credentials alone do not tell a user definitively whether a file is AI-generated. Google Help; OpenAI Developers
Metadata has a file-handling weakness: OpenAI notes that editing, converting, or sharing a file can remove its credentials. Google also documents compatibility limits for the credentials Gemini will recognize. As a result, absent credentials may mean there is no supported credential attached to the file—not that the image has no AI history.

What a positive, negative, or unclear check can tell you
- Positive matching signal: A detected SynthID supports an origin or edit by the provider whose signal the tool recognizes. Check the tool’s stated coverage before drawing conclusions about who made the rest of the image.
- No detected signal: The origin may be outside the tool’s supported coverage; metadata could have been stripped; an embedded signal may not survive a transformation; or other product limitations may apply. It is not proof of human creation.
- Unclear or unavailable result: The file may not provide enough detectable information, the credential may be unsupported or incompatible, or the provider may not offer a relevant check. Treat the result as unresolved rather than as evidence for either human or AI authorship.
For OpenAI’s checks specifically, the company warns that a missing signal does not rule out OpenAI generation and that its provenance tool is not intended to detect every AI system. Why this is not a complete comparison of every generator
“Other AI image generators” is broader than the documented evidence here. Google and OpenAI describe provider-specific checks and signals; that does not establish whether another service embeds SynthID, attaches C2PA credentials, uses a different watermark, or offers a verification workflow. Do not treat a Gemini or OpenAI result as a verdict on products those tools do not claim to cover.
Google’s SynthID text documentation discusses probabilistic detection and uncertainty for text, including reduced effectiveness when text is substantially rewritten or translated.
