A padlock beside a PlayStation game means there may be a license problem, but it does not reveal the cause. First identify how you access the game—purchase, claimed monthly game, catalog, or another player’s account—then check the account and eligibility before troubleshooting the console.
What a padlock means
Sony says a padlock icon could mean there is a problem with the game’s license. Treat it as a symptom, not a diagnosis. A missing entitlement, an expired membership, a catalog title that is no longer offered, sharing settings, or a console or network issue can all affect access.

Identify how you got access to the game
The right account and eligibility check depend on the game’s access path. Use this table to identify what to verify first.

|---|---|
| Purchased game | Sign in to the purchasing account and confirm the transaction succeeded. |
| Monthly game claimed through PlayStation Plus | Confirm it was claimed on the account you are using and that the membership is active. Monthly games are available while membership is active. |
| Game Catalog | Confirm your plan includes Game Catalog access and that the game is still in the catalog. |
| Classics Catalog or cloud streaming | Confirm Premium eligibility and check that the title and streaming service are supported. |
| Game owned by another console user | Check the owner’s PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play setting or PS4 primary-console activation. |
| Disc game with an add-on | Check that the disc and add-on regions match. |
PlayStation Plus benefits differ by plan: Sony lists Game Catalog access for Extra and Premium, and Classics Catalog access and cloud streaming for Premium. Monthly games are a separate membership benefit. Check Sony’s current PlayStation Plus plan details and the live catalog, since game availability can change.

Check the account, membership, and game availability
- Sign in to the account that owns the entitlement. For a purchase, use the account that bought the game. For a claimed monthly game or catalog title, use the account that claimed or accessed it.
- Confirm the purchase or claim. Check the account’s transaction history if you recently bought or redeemed the game. Sony’s game-lock troubleshooting guidance recommends confirming the account and transaction.
- Verify membership and plan. Make sure the membership is active and includes the benefit you are trying to use. A catalog title requires an eligible plan; a monthly game requires an active membership.
- Check the game’s current availability. If it came from a catalog, look it up in the PlayStation Store or on your console. Catalog lineups can change, so having downloaded a title previously does not establish that it remains available through the catalog.
Check sharing and family restrictions
If another person owns the game, access depends on that owner’s sharing setup. On PS5, have the owner check Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, check whether the console is activated as the owner’s primary PS4. Sony explains these sharing settings in its Console Sharing and Offline Play support page.
If the lock covers the whole PS5 game image and the account is managed as a child account, ask the family manager to check parental-control settings. Sony includes this as a possible cause in its game-lock guidance.

Check PlayStation Network, then restore licenses
Check the PlayStation Network service status before changing settings. If Sony reports an outage or maintenance, wait for service to return and try again.
If service is available, restore licenses on the account that should have access. Sony says restoring licenses will not affect your data and may resolve padlock issues.

Continue with console troubleshooting
If the entitlement checks and license restore do not help, work through Sony’s software troubleshooting steps:

- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
- Restart the console and install any available system software update.
- For a PS5 license-verification error, Sony recommends restarting the router and modem, then trying again later if the error persists.
- Consider rebuilding the console database through Safe Mode. Follow Sony’s instructions for Safe Mode options.
- If the problem appears limited to one installation, check storage space, then consider deleting and redownloading the game. Sony lists these as later steps in its game-launch troubleshooting guide.
Check region only for a disc-and-add-on mismatch
Region is not the default explanation for a digital PlayStation Plus lock. It is particularly relevant when a disc game’s add-on will not work: Sony says the disc and add-on regions must match. Also, the country or region of a PlayStation account cannot be changed after the account is created. See Sony’s DLC and add-on region guidance before troubleshooting this kind of mismatch.
Contact PlayStation Support if access still fails
If the account, entitlement, availability, sharing, network, and console checks do not resolve the lock, contact PlayStation Support. Include the exact error code or message, what happens when you launch the game, the steps that reproduce the issue, and a screenshot or video if you can provide one. This gives support concrete details to investigate rather than just the padlock icon.
