The most common non-SSD use for an M.2 slot is a compatible Wi-Fi module—but only if the slot is designed and wired for wireless connectivity. M.2 is a connector and form-factor family, not a universal expansion interface, so a card that fits physically may still be incompatible.
What can an M.2 slot do besides store data?
A dedicated M.2 Wi-Fi socket can accept a compatible wireless module. Some modules also provide Bluetooth, but the module and computer must support that function. ASUS manuals, for example, identify Key E sockets for Wi-Fi modules, including an E-key, 2230-size socket in the Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE manual and a Wi-Fi module socket in the Pro H610T-CSM manual.

Other M.2 sockets are intended for storage, and their supported interfaces can differ. A Key M socket may support PCIe, SATA, or a specified combination; its key alone does not tell you every function it supports. The ROG STRIX B365-G GAMING manual, for example, distinguishes storage sockets with different PCIe and SATA support from a separate M.2 Wi-Fi socket.

- Find the exact computer or motherboard model. Use its manufacturer manual or specifications, not a general description of M.2.
- Confirm the socket’s purpose and key. Check that it is identified for the module’s function, such as Wi-Fi, rather than assuming a storage socket can take a wireless card.
- Match the module dimensions and interface. Verify the supported module length and required signals, such as PCIe, SATA, or USB, against the socket specification.
- Check the supporting hardware and software. A Wi-Fi module may need antenna leads, compatible firmware, operating-system support, and regional radio support.
- Read the fine print for board-specific limits. Look for shared lanes or ports and processor-dependent restrictions. The ASUS TUF GAMING B850M-E WIFI specifications list different M.2 PCIe capabilities depending on processor family.
How common M.2 uses compare
| Use | What must be true | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi module, potentially with Bluetooth | The computer has an M.2 socket intended and wired for a wireless module. ASUS documents dedicated Wi-Fi sockets, including an E-key, type 2230 example. | Socket purpose and key, module size and interface, antenna connections, firmware and operating-system support, and regional radio support. |
| PCIe or SATA storage | The particular socket supports the drive’s protocol. ASUS documents storage sockets with different PCIe and SATA capabilities on one motherboard. | PCIe versus SATA, supported drive length, lane or generation limits, boot support, and any shared SATA ports. |
| Cellular modem or other expansion | Compatibility is device-specific; general plug-and-play support is not established. | Required signals, key, antennas or SIM provisions, firmware restrictions, drivers, and host support. |
Why physical fit is not enough
M.2 sockets and modules use different keys, sizes, and electrical interfaces. A module may line up with a connector yet lack the signaling, firmware support, or board wiring it needs. Even sockets on the same motherboard can have different supported interfaces. Treat the exact model’s manual as authoritative, and do not assume a Key M SSD socket can take a Wi-Fi card just because both are M.2.

Can you use a cellular modem or another expansion card?
Possibly, but only where the computer is specifically designed to support that module. Cellular devices and other expansion hardware can require particular PCIe or USB signals, antenna connections, a SIM arrangement, firmware approval, and drivers. Without those details in the system’s documentation, do not assume the module will work.
