Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA lock icon on a PlayStation game does not identify one cause. Check first that you are signed into the account that bought or claimed it, then verify the relevant PlayStation Plus entitlement and the game’s availability. If another account owns the game, check console sharing. After those checks, restore licenses; Sony says this does not affect saved data.
First identify what gives you access to the game
An installed game is not proof that the account currently using the console has a valid entitlement. The lock may point to a license issue, but Sony notes that it is not necessarily caused by an expired PS Plus membership. On PS5, if the padlock covers the entire game image, a family manager may be able to adjust the applicable restriction. See Sony’s locked-game troubleshooting.

- Sign in to the PlayStation account that purchased or claimed the game.
- Check that account’s transaction history to confirm the purchase or claim succeeded.
- If access comes through PS Plus, check the membership and whether the game is still available to that account in your region.
Monthly games and catalog games work differently
PS Plus monthly games can be downloaded and played while the account has an active membership, provided the games were claimed. The Game Catalog is available to Extra members; Premium members can also access the Classics Catalog. Catalog selections can change, so check whether the particular title is currently offered in your region. Sony describes the PS Plus plans and benefits and the ways to check a membership.
Check membership and catalog availability
Review the subscription on the account that claimed or otherwise has access to the game. Sony’s subscription instructions show how to check membership status and the next payment date online or on PS5 and PS4. If the membership has expired, subscription-dependent access may stop; renewing can help only when the game entitlement depends on that membership. It cannot restore a catalog title that is no longer available.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
For a catalog game, confirm the title remains in the catalog for your region. A game disappearing from the catalog is different from a license glitch: restoring licenses cannot make an unavailable title available again.
Check console sharing if a different account owns the game
If the game was bought or claimed by someone else on the console, that owner’s sharing settings may determine whether other users can play it. Do this check only when the owner account differs from the account seeing the lock.

On PS5
Sign in as the game owner and open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Confirm the setting is enabled on the console in question. Sony allows this setting on one PS5 at a time for an account; enabling it on another PS5 can affect access on the first. See Console Sharing and Offline Play.

Sign in as the owner and activate the console as that account’s primary PS4. Sony’s locked-game troubleshooting identifies primary-PS4 activation as the relevant sharing check. Some PS Plus benefits can be shared on one PS5 and one primary PS4, subject to Sony’s conditions; that does not mean every subscription benefit is shared.

Restore licenses on the console
Once account ownership, subscription entitlement, title availability, and any needed sharing setting are checked, restore licenses. Sony states that restoring licenses does not affect saved data. Use the path for your console:
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then select the licenses to restore. You can also highlight the game on the home screen or in the library, open its options menu, and choose Restore License.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore.
Refer to Sony’s license restoration instructions if the labels differ on your console.

If the game is still locked
After the entitlement and license checks, work through Sony’s remaining troubleshooting steps:
- Check PlayStation service status for an outage or service issue.
- Install the latest system software available for the console.
- Recheck sharing or primary-console activation if another account owns the game, then restore licenses again if needed.
- If the game still will not start, Sony lists rebuilding the database through Safe Mode as a later step in its locked-game troubleshooting. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode guidance for the console before choosing an option.
If you contact PlayStation Support, include any error code, a clear description of what happens, and the steps that reproduce the problem. A screenshot or video can help show where the lock appears. Membership terms, catalog selections, service status, and interface labels can change; Sony’s instructions here were checked on October 7, 2026, and account-specific access should be verified at the time you troubleshoot.
