Neither PS5 nor Xbox Series X is automatically better for couch multiplayer. Choose the console that has the local games your household wants, in the modes and player counts you need. Check the exact game edition before buying: local co-op, split-screen and local competitive play are different features, and support varies by title.
Start with the games your group wants to play
Both platforms offer games for same-room play on one TV, but their storefronts do not provide a standardized, directly comparable measure of couch-multiplayer catalog size or quality. A longer-looking list is not proof that one console has the better selection for your group. Start with specific games, then check their current listings.

For PlayStation discovery, the official couch co-op collection includes Split Fiction, Diablo IV, Baldur’s Gate 3 and It Takes Two. PlayStation’s local multiplayer guide also gives examples of competitive and co-op modes. Xbox’s local co-op catalog lists games including Minecraft, Rocket League, Borderlands 4, Gang Beasts, A Way Out and Gears of War: Reloaded.

Check the local mode and player count for each game
“Multiplayer” does not necessarily mean several people can play together on one console. A game may offer online multiplayer but no local mode, or local play may be limited to a particular mode or player count. Confirm whether your group wants co-op, split-screen co-op, shared-screen play or local competitive play, and make sure the edition supports enough people at once.
PlayStation’s guide lists Tekken 8 for two-player local competitive play, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for two to four players in local competitive and co-op play, and F1 25 for two-player local co-op. Those are game-specific examples, not a rule for other titles or editions. Check each game’s current store listing for the mode and player count you need.

Factor in games you already own
If your household has a library from an older console generation, verified compatibility may affect the choice. PlayStation says that more than 99 percent of the 4,000+ games available on PS4 are playable on PS5. This is Sony’s compatibility claim, not a count of couch-multiplayer games and not directly comparable with an Xbox catalog statistic. See PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsXbox Series X|S supports select Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. But a compatible game is not necessarily compatible with every local feature you care about. Xbox says offline co-op, multiple-controller party scenarios and system-link are supported for original Xbox games only when the original game supported them; specific features vary by game. Consult Xbox’s backward-compatibility information and verify the individual title’s local modes.

Include controllers and access in your budget
Local play may require additional controllers. PlayStation’s local multiplayer materials recommend an extra DualSense wireless controller, but the number you need depends on the game and how many people will play. Check the title’s player count before buying accessories; do not assume a single extra controller covers every group size.
Also check whether the game must be purchased or is currently included with a subscription. Store and service terms can change. Local and online play have different requirements, so do not assume couch play requires an online subscription. Xbox notes that online console multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass; offline play on a compatible original Xbox game depends on the support that game originally offered. Check current service terms and the chosen game’s requirements.

A practical way to choose
- Make a short game list. Write down the titles your group actually wants, rather than choosing by a broad catalog impression.
- Verify local play. On the current store listing or platform guide, confirm the exact edition supports same-console play and the mode you want.
- Check player count and setup. Confirm how many people can play locally and how many controllers you need.
- Check your existing library. Verify compatibility and the specific local features for games you already own.
- Compare what remains to buy. Check current game prices, subscription availability and controller costs for the console that covers more of your list.
If one system has the games your group is excited to play and the other does not, that is the clearest deciding factor. If both cover the list, compare the exact editions, player counts, existing game ownership and total setup cost. There is no established catalog-wide statistic that settles the choice for every household.
