A long PHP request does not normally freeze Nginx itself. It occupies one PHP-FPM child process for as long as the script runs. When every child allowed by the pool is occupied, new PHP requests wait in the FastCGI listen queue until a child is free. The practical bottleneck is therefore usually PHP-FPM pool capacity, not Nginx response buffering.

What happens between Nginx and PHP-FPM
Nginx and PHP-FPM perform different jobs. Nginx accepts client connections, serves static files, applies HTTP policies and forwards dynamic PHP requests. PHP-FPM is the FastCGI application server that starts PHP worker processes and executes the scripts.

For a PHP page, Nginx matches a location rule and passes the request to the address configured by fastcgi_pass. PHP-FPM assigns that request to an available child process. A child normally handles one request at a time, so it cannot execute another PHP request while the first script is still running.
If a script spends two minutes exporting data, waiting on a remote API, scanning a large directory or running a slow database query, its assigned child remains occupied for those two minutes. Other requests can continue only if another child is available in the same pool. Once the pool has no idle child, the requests accumulate in the FastCGI queue and appear to users as slow or timed-out pages.

The setting that limits simultaneous PHP requests
pm.max_children is the concurrency ceiling
PHP-FPM’s pm.max_children directive sets the maximum number of simultaneous requests served by a pool. In a static pool, it is the fixed number of children kept available. In dynamic and ondemand pools, it remains the upper limit even though the number of running children changes over time.
Suppose a pool can run eight children and all eight are executing long scripts. A ninth PHP request cannot start execution immediately; it waits for one of those children to finish. Increasing Nginx’s response buffers cannot create a ninth PHP worker. Raising pm.max_children can increase concurrency only when the host has enough memory and CPU to support the additional processes.

PHP-FPM pools are shared capacity by default. If the home page, login endpoint, administration panel and a large report all use the same pool, a burst of report requests can consume every child. The home page is not blocked by the report’s PHP code directly; it is waiting for the same finite worker pool.
The effect is especially visible when the slow endpoint is triggered by a browser refresh, a webhook retry or a batch client that opens several concurrent connections. Each request consumes a separate child while it runs. A single slow request uses one slot, but several overlapping slow requests can exhaust a small pool quickly.
How PHP-FPM process-management modes change behavior
| Mode | How children are created | Relevant controls | What a long request does |
|---|---|---|---|
| static | Keeps a fixed number of children running. | pm.max_children |
Each occupied child removes one slot from the fixed concurrency limit until it completes. |
| dynamic | Maintains a variable number of children within configured floor and ceiling values. | pm.max_children, pm.start_servers, pm.min_spare_servers, pm.max_spare_servers |
Busy children remain occupied; new children may be created only up to the maximum and subject to host resources. |
| ondemand | Starts children when requests arrive and removes idle children after pm.process_idle_timeout. |
pm.max_children, pm.process_idle_timeout |
Running work still holds children. Idle-child cleanup does not interrupt an active request. |
Dynamic and ondemand settings change how quickly capacity appears and disappears; neither mode allows more than pm.max_children simultaneous requests. A copied example value is not a universal performance recommendation. The correct ceiling depends on measured worker memory, available RAM, CPU capacity and the other services sharing the machine.
What Nginx is—and is not—doing
The fastcgi_pass directive sends the request to a FastCGI server such as PHP-FPM. Nginx can keep connections open, buffer response data and enforce upstream timeouts, but those functions do not execute PHP code or increase the number of PHP-FPM children.

Nginx response buffering controls how response bytes are read from PHP-FPM and forwarded to the client. It can prevent a slow client from tying up an upstream connection in some situations, but it cannot make a PHP child available while that child is still running the script. If the upstream has no free worker, Nginx must wait for one or report an upstream timeout according to its configured limits.
This distinction helps identify the fault domain. A static file may remain fast because Nginx can serve it directly, while a PHP route queues because it requires a busy FPM pool. Conversely, an Nginx worker, network socket limit or upstream timeout can create a separate problem; pool telemetry is needed before changing either server.
Diagnose queueing before changing limits
1. Observe pool status
Enable and inspect the PHP-FPM status page for the affected pool. Look for active processes, idle processes, the total process count and the listen queue. A full active count combined with little or no idle capacity and a growing queue indicates worker saturation.
PHP-FPM also supports pm.status_listen, an independent status listener. Because it does not depend on the main pool’s request workers, it can continue serving status information while long-running requests have occupied those workers. This is useful when the normal status URI itself becomes unreachable during an incident.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Capture slow requests with the slow log
Configure the pool’s slowlog and a slow-request threshold appropriate to the application. The slow log records PHP backtraces for requests that exceed that threshold, showing where the script is spending time. Use it to distinguish application work from time spent waiting on an external dependency.
3. Correlate Nginx and FPM timing
Compare Nginx upstream timing fields with PHP-FPM slow-log entries and pool status snapshots. A long upstream response time with a corresponding PHP backtrace points toward application execution. A request that waits before PHP starts, alongside a rising FPM listen queue, points toward pool contention. Keep timestamps and request identifiers aligned so retries are not mistaken for separate failures.

4. Identify the blocking operation
- Database calls without suitable indexes or with locks held by another transaction.
- Remote HTTP calls that wait for a service, DNS response or network timeout.
- Filesystem scans, archive creation, image processing or other large I/O operations.
- Large loops, inefficient algorithms or unbounded pagination.
- Exports that build an entire result set in memory before sending a response.
Measure the operation rather than assuming that PHP execution itself is slow. A script can consume a worker while it is blocked on I/O, and adding workers will not repair the dependency that is timing out.
5. Check pool boundaries
Confirm which pool handles each route. If every virtual host and endpoint points to one pool, an isolated batch operation cannot be prevented from consuming interactive capacity. Pool separation is a design choice, not an automatic PHP-FPM feature; verify the socket or upstream mapping for each application.
How to choose a safe pm.max_children
Measure worker memory under representative load
PHP-FPM children have a baseline footprint and may grow while handling framework bootstrapping, plugins, uploads or large queries. Measure resident memory for several active children during realistic traffic, including the heaviest normal endpoint. Do not size from an idle process or from a value copied from another server.
Reserve capacity for the operating system and other services
Subtract memory needed by the operating system, Nginx, databases, caches, monitoring agents and any other workloads. The remainder is the budget available to PHP-FPM. A rough planning relationship is:
safe_children = memory_budget_for_php / observed_peak_memory_per_child
This is a sizing method, not a guaranteed formula. Leave headroom for bursts and allocator variation, then validate the result with monitoring. If the machine begins swapping, latency can become worse even though the nominal child count is higher; an out-of-memory event can terminate processes and make the outage broader.
Check CPU as well as RAM
More children increase potential parallelism but also increase runnable work. CPU-bound scripts may compete with one another and with the database, producing longer runtimes and deeper queues. Raise the ceiling in small, observed changes and compare queue depth, request latency, CPU saturation, memory pressure and error rates after each change.

Understand what the setting can and cannot fix
- It can provide more concurrent execution when spare memory and CPU exist.
- It cannot make an individual script finish faster.
- It cannot prevent a dependency from timing out.
- It cannot guarantee interactive traffic if batch traffic shares the same pool.
- It can worsen swapping or trigger out-of-memory failures when set beyond host capacity.
Mitigation patterns for long-running work
| Pattern | Latency for the user | Failure isolation | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Synchronous PHP request | The client waits for completion; queueing grows when workers are busy. | Lowest isolation because the web pool remains occupied. | Simplest request flow, but vulnerable to browser, proxy and upstream timeouts. |
| Queued background job | Return quickly with a job identifier; the client polls or receives completion separately. | Web workers are released while a worker process handles the job. | Requires a durable queue, job state, retries and idempotency rules. |
| Separate FPM pool | Interactive routes retain their own capacity while batch routes run elsewhere. | Strong isolation when pools have independent limits and sockets. | Requires pool configuration, capacity planning and routing discipline. |
| Higher worker count | May reduce queueing if resources are available. | No isolation; all routes still compete inside the pool. | Fastest configuration change, but memory and CPU pressure can rise sharply. |
Return immediately and process asynchronously
For report generation, media conversion, bulk imports and similar work, accept the request, enqueue a job and return a job identifier. A separate worker can process the job outside the interactive request path. Store progress and final status so clients can retry a status check without starting duplicate work.
Retries must be designed deliberately. Use an idempotency key or a durable job state so a network retry does not create two invoices, duplicate an import or repeat an irreversible action. Background processing removes web-pool pressure but introduces queue monitoring and failure handling.
Isolate slow routes in another pool
Place batch or administrative endpoints in a separate PHP-FPM pool with its own socket and process limits. Interactive traffic then has reserved workers. Isolation is most effective when the batch pool is also bounded so it cannot exhaust the host’s total memory or CPU.
Use fastcgi_finish_request() carefully
PHP’s fastcgi_finish_request() can flush the response and let the client receive it before PHP performs additional work. It does not free the PHP-FPM child. The process remains occupied until the post-response code ends, so using this function for substantial work can still consume every worker. Use it only for short, safe follow-up tasks and monitor the resulting worker occupancy.
Add termination guardrails
Set PHP-FPM’s request_terminate_timeout and application-level timeouts as safety limits. These controls stop runaway requests, but they are not a substitute for finding the slow query, remote call or loop that caused the delay. Choose limits that allow legitimate operations to finish while preventing a stuck request from holding a child indefinitely.
Common symptoms and what they mean
PHP pages time out while static files remain fast
This pattern is consistent with PHP-FPM saturation because static files bypass PHP execution. Confirm active children and the listen queue before changing Nginx buffering or worker settings.
Best Value
The status endpoint is unavailable during an incident
If status uses the same saturated pool as application traffic, it may wait for a child too. An independent pm.status_listen listener provides a monitoring path that remains available while the main pool is busy.
Increasing pm.max_children makes everything slower
The new ceiling may have exceeded memory or CPU capacity. Check for swap activity, out-of-memory kills, CPU run-queue growth and larger per-request times. Reduce the limit to a measured safe value and address the long-running endpoint rather than continuing to add workers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Only one site is affected on a shared server
The affected virtual host may have its own pool, or its routes may generate the slow work. Compare pool status for each application and verify which FastCGI socket Nginx uses. A shared database or remote dependency can still affect several sites even when their FPM pools are separate.
Timeouts occur at different layers
Nginx, PHP-FPM, PHP itself, the database driver and remote HTTP clients can each have independent timeouts. Align their logs and timestamps. A request can be terminated by an outer timeout while PHP continues consuming a child until its own termination policy acts, so configure and monitor the layers together.
A practical operating checklist
- Record the affected URI, request rate, response time and timeouts.
- Inspect active, idle and total FPM children plus the listen queue.
- Use an independent status listener when the main pool is saturated.
- Enable slow logging and capture backtraces for requests over the chosen threshold.
- Match slow requests to database, remote-service, filesystem and application timings.
- Confirm whether interactive and batch routes share one pool.
- Measure peak per-child memory and reserve host capacity before changing
pm.max_children. - Apply a small configuration change, then watch memory, CPU, queue depth and latency.
- Move expensive work to a queue or isolated pool when it does not belong in a user-facing request.
- Keep request termination limits as guardrails and investigate every recurring termination.
The key distinction to remember
Nginx is the front door, but PHP-FPM is the finite execution pool for PHP requests. A long script occupies one child; queueing begins when all permitted children are occupied. Status data and slow backtraces show whether the immediate problem is pool pressure or a specific blocking operation. Sustainable fixes come from reducing synchronous work, isolating batch traffic and sizing workers against measured memory and CPU, not from treating Nginx buffering as extra PHP capacity.
