A WordPress site that is “not responding” can be suffering from a fatal PHP error, a failed plugin or theme, an unreachable database, exhausted server resources, or a DNS, SSL, firewall, or authentication problem. Start by identifying exactly what is unavailable, record the browser error and HTTP status, and preserve logs before changing files. Then work through Recovery Mode, temporary debugging, plugin and theme isolation, database checks, resource limits, and host-level diagnostics in that order.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
First, identify what “not responding” means
Do not begin by deleting plugins or replacing WordPress files. The same symptom can have very different causes, and an unnecessary change can destroy evidence or make recovery harder.

- Open the home page and one or two unrelated posts in a private browser window.
- Open
/wp-admin/and/wp-login.phpdirectly. - Ask another person on a different network to test the site, or test from a mobile connection. A local DNS or browser problem can look like a server outage.
- Note whether the failure affects the entire site, only the dashboard, or only particular pages.
A front end that shows a WordPress error while wp-admin still works usually points to application code such as a plugin, theme, or template. If both areas time out before returning an HTTP response, investigate the server, database, DNS, SSL, firewall, and resource limits as well as WordPress.
Record the exact message and status
Save a screenshot or copy the complete browser message. Record the HTTP status if one is shown:

| What you see | What it commonly indicates | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| “Critical error on this website” or a blank white page | A fatal PHP error, often in a plugin, theme, or custom code | Administrator email, Recovery Mode, and PHP/debug logs |
| HTTP 500 or “Internal Server Error” | A server-side PHP failure, configuration error, exhausted resource, or damaged core file | PHP and web-server logs, then plugin/theme isolation |
| “Error establishing a database connection” | Wrong database settings, an unavailable database server, quota exhaustion, or possible compromise | wp-config.php values and host database status |
| A connection timeout or gateway timeout | Slow or blocked PHP work, insufficient memory, external requests, or network/server rules | Resource usage, PHP limits, web-server logs, and firewall or DNS checks |
| Only Site Health loopback or REST checks fail | Plugins, DNS, SSL, firewall rules, or HTTP authentication can block WordPress from connecting back to itself | Loopback and REST diagnostics rather than immediately replacing core files |
Check the administrator email
WordPress Recovery Mode was introduced in version 5.2. WordPress automatically activates it when it detects a fatal PHP error during a regular page load, not during CRON or other background tasks. The site administrator receives an email containing a Recovery Mode link. Follow that link if it is available before making manual changes.
Use Recovery Mode when WordPress offers it
The Recovery Mode link opens a temporary session for the administrator. WordPress pauses the faulty plugin or theme for that session and displays an error identifying the component. The public site may still be broken for ordinary visitors, but the session can let you reach the dashboard safely enough to correct the cause.

- Read the error notice and note the named plugin, theme, file, and line information.
- Deactivate the named plugin, switch away from the named theme, or install a corrected version if you know the change is safe.
- Exit Recovery Mode, open a normal private window, and test the front end and
/wp-admin/. - If the error returns, continue with log collection and full isolation instead of repeatedly reopening the same broken component.
Recovery Mode is not a permanent repair. It is an administrator session designed to make a fatal-error site manageable long enough to disable or correct the offending component.
Capture logs before changing code
Logs often identify the exact file and failure while the browser shows only “500” or a blank page. Temporarily enable WordPress debugging and logging, reproduce the failure once, and then inspect the resulting entries.
Enable temporary WordPress logging
Make a backup of wp-config.php before editing it. Add the debugging definitions above the line that says WordPress should stop editing the file:

With logging enabled, reproduce the problem and inspect wp-content/debug.log. Keeping display disabled prevents PHP notices and stack traces from being shown publicly while still recording them. Also request the host’s PHP and web-server logs; they can contain the fatal error, memory exhaustion, permission failure, upstream timeout, or security rule that WordPress cannot see.

- Plugin or theme path: a path containing
wp-content/plugins/orwp-content/themes/identifies the first component to isolate. - Allowed memory size exhausted: check PHP’s
memory_limitand the work being performed before simply raising limits. - Maximum execution time or timeout: determine whether a request is doing heavy work or waiting on an external service.
- Database connection or authentication errors: verify credentials and ask the host whether the database server is reachable.
- Permission or missing-file errors: compare the affected path with the last update, deployment, or migration.
Debugging can reduce performance and expose sensitive information. After diagnosis, remove or disable the temporary debugging settings and confirm that errors are no longer displayed to visitors.
Disable plugins safely
Plugins are a frequent cause of fatal errors, conflicts, memory exhaustion, and failed REST or loopback requests. Isolate them rather than deleting their directories, because settings and data may be needed for recovery.
When wp-admin still works
- Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Select all plugins, choose Deactivate, and apply the action.
- Test the front end, the dashboard, and the page that originally failed.
- If the problem is gone, reactivate one plugin at a time.
- After each activation, repeat the same test and record which activation brings the failure back.
Reactivate plugins individually, not in groups. The first plugin that reproduces the error is a strong suspect, but check its compatibility with the current WordPress and PHP versions before deciding whether to update, replace, or remove it.
When wp-admin is unavailable
- Connect with FTP or the hosting file manager.
- Open the site’s
wp-contentdirectory. - Rename
pluginsto a temporary name such asplugins.disabled. Renaming disables the plugins while preserving their files and settings. - Test the site and dashboard.
- Rename the directory back to
plugins. - Use the dashboard, or temporarily rename individual plugin directories, to identify the component one at a time.
If renaming the entire directory does not change the symptom, plugins are less likely to be the sole cause. Restore the original directory name before moving to the theme and server checks.

Test the active theme
A theme can trigger a fatal error in its templates, functions, or compatibility code. If the dashboard is accessible, open Appearance > Themes and activate an available standard WordPress theme. Then test the same URL and dashboard functions.
When the dashboard cannot be opened, use FTP or the host file manager to rename the active theme’s directory under wp-content/themes. WordPress will fall back to an available default theme. Do not rename every theme: leave at least one standard theme directory intact so the fallback is possible.
If the default theme restores the site, preserve the failing theme’s files, review its error-log path, and contact its developer or install a version compatible with the site’s WordPress and PHP environment. Switching themes can change menus, widgets, and layout, so treat it as a diagnostic step and restore the intended theme only after it is safe.
Fix an “Error establishing a database connection”
WordPress cannot render normal pages without its database. Open wp-config.php and verify the database name, username, password, and host against the values supplied by the hosting account. A password reset, migration, host change, or accidental edit can make previously correct values invalid.
Check the database from the hosting account
- Ask the host whether the database server is currently running and reachable from the web server.
- Ask whether the account has exceeded a database-size or storage quota.
- Confirm that the database user still has permission to access the named database.
- Compare the host’s database hostname with the value in
wp-config.php; it is not alwayslocalhost.
If credentials and host status do not explain the outage, treat a possible compromise as a serious branch. Preserve logs and backups, and arrange a malware or integrity scan rather than repeatedly changing credentials without understanding what changed.

Investigate timeouts, memory, and long-running requests
A timeout means the request did not finish within the limit imposed by the browser, web server, proxy, PHP, or host. Common triggers include expensive queries, image or import processing, restricted shared-host memory, external API requests, PHP execution limits, and network rules that block a dependency.
Check resource limits with the host
The WordPress Hosting Team’s 2026 Hosting Handbook lists default WP_MEMORY_LIMIT values of 40M for single-site front-end requests and 256M for administrator requests. These are defaults, not guarantees. The host’s PHP memory_limit can prevent WordPress from increasing the runtime limit, so changing a WordPress constant alone may have no effect.
Ask the host for current PHP memory, execution-time, process, CPU, and database limits, along with account resource graphs around the failure time. A site that works after disabling a plugin but still reaches a limit during imports may need a smaller batch size, a more efficient plugin, or a hosting change rather than an unlimited memory increase.

Separate a slow request from a blocked request
- If only one admin action hangs, identify the plugin or operation running during that action.
- If every page hangs, check PHP workers, database reachability, DNS, and server load.
- If pages fail only when an external service is called, inspect outbound firewall rules, DNS resolution, and the service’s response time.
- If a timeout began after an update, use the logs and one-at-a-time plugin/theme tests to correlate the change.
Resolve loopback and REST API failures
WordPress performs loopback requests by connecting back to the site over HTTP. It uses this behavior to check that certain changes do not break the site, and Site Health reports failures when the connection cannot complete. A loopback warning does not always mean that public pages are down, but it can prevent scheduled tasks, editing checks, or background operations from working.
Investigate plugins and themes first, then check:
- DNS resolution for the site’s own domain from the server;
- SSL certificate validity and whether the server can connect over the configured HTTPS address;
- firewall or web-application rules blocking requests from the server to itself;
- HTTP authentication or maintenance protection applied to the site;
- redirects that send the request between HTTP and HTTPS indefinitely.
After isolating a plugin or theme, reactivate components one at a time and rerun the same Site Health check. Keep a record of the component that changes the result instead of making several changes simultaneously.

Repair a failed upgrade or damaged core files
An interrupted update can leave missing or mismatched WordPress core files. Before repairing files, confirm that a recent database and file backup exists, review permissions, and save the relevant logs.
- Check whether the site is stuck in maintenance mode or whether the host reports a failed file operation.
- Review PHP and web-server logs for the first error during the upgrade.
- Verify that the web server can read the WordPress files and that the account has enough storage for an update.
- Follow the official manual-update procedure for the installed WordPress branch.
- If the common-errors guidance calls for it, re-upload fresh
wp-adminandwp-includesdirectories. - Do not overwrite
wp-content, uploads, custom files, or site-specific configuration during that repair.
Do not use a core-file replacement to hide a plugin or theme error. If the logs point into wp-content, return to isolation instead.
Check DNS, SSL, firewall, and server rules
When the browser cannot establish a connection at all, WordPress may not be receiving the request. Compare the site from multiple networks and check whether the domain resolves to the expected server. A DNS change, expired SSL certificate, restrictive firewall, IP block, or HTTP authentication rule can affect visitors and administrators equally.
Ask the host to verify:
- DNS records and propagation for the domain and any
wwwvariant; - the certificate, private-key pairing, and HTTPS virtual-host configuration;
- firewall, rate-limit, intrusion-prevention, and country or IP restrictions;
- web-server error logs and upstream PHP status;
- HTTP authentication, maintenance rules, redirects, and recent configuration changes.
If a host-level check shows the request never reaches PHP, changing WordPress plugins or core files will not solve the outage.
Use the symptoms to choose the next test
| Scope and evidence | Most useful first action | What would confirm the cause |
|---|---|---|
| Front end and dashboard fail with a fatal-error notice; Recovery Mode names a component | Use Recovery Mode and pause that component | The site works after the named plugin or theme is corrected |
| Blank page or HTTP 500; logs name a plugin | Disable all plugins, then reactivate individually | One activation reproduces the same log entry |
| Blank page or HTTP 500; logs name the theme | Switch to a standard theme or rename the active theme directory | The default theme restores the page |
| Database-connection message | Verify all four database settings and host status | Correct credentials, permissions, quota, or server availability restore access |
| Timeout with memory or execution-limit entries | Review host resource usage and PHP limits | The request completes after the offending workload or limit is addressed |
| Only loopback or REST checks fail | Check DNS, SSL, firewall, authentication, and isolated plugins | Self-requests complete after the blocking rule or component is corrected |
| No HTTP response from any network | Escalate DNS, SSL, firewall, and web-server checks to the host | The host identifies a network or server-layer fault before WordPress runs |
When and how to escalate
Contact the host when application-level isolation does not restore service, when you cannot access PHP or web-server logs, or when the site is consuming resources or failing before WordPress loads. Provide the exact URL, UTC time of the failure, status code, screenshots, recent changes, and the relevant log excerpts.
Ask specifically for PHP and web-server logs, database status and quota, resource limits, DNS, SSL, firewall rules, HTTP authentication, and server configuration changes. A precise request is more useful than “the site is down.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a WordPress professional if you cannot safely use FTP, a host file manager, database administration tools, or backups. Do not guess at database repairs, delete unknown files, or overwrite wp-content without a verified rollback.
After the site returns
- Disable public debugging and remove temporary diagnostic settings.
- Keep the log entry, timestamp, and identified cause in an incident note.
- Update or replace the incompatible plugin or theme only after confirming a backup and a rollback path.
- Check the front end, login, editor, forms, scheduled tasks, REST endpoints, and critical transaction pages.
- Review administrator accounts, file changes, and security scans if the database or files behaved unexpectedly.
- Keep tested backups of both the database and files so a failed update can be reversed without improvisation.
The safest repair is the smallest change that explains the evidence: pause the identified component, correct the configuration or resource constraint, verify the result, and only then restore normal operation.
