What controls fall damage in Hytale?
Hytale stores fall-damage behavior on each world instance. The official world schema calls the property IsFallDamageEnabled and defines it as a Boolean: true allows fall damage and false prevents it. The documented default is true. This is a server-side world rule, not a setting that an individual player can change in the client.

Because the property belongs to a world, changing one world does not automatically change another. A survival world, minigame world, test world and lobby can therefore have different fall-damage rules. You must edit each world’s configuration separately if you want the same behavior everywhere.

The file method is the authoritative option when you need a setting that survives restarts and can be reviewed in backups. The command is convenient, but the syntax comes from a hosting guide rather than the official asset reference, so check the current server’s /help output before relying on it. An area plugin is the appropriate solution when disabling damage for an entire world would be too broad.

Disable or enable fall damage by editing the world file
Use this procedure when you can access the server’s filesystem through a local installation, control panel file manager or SFTP. Make the change while the server is stopped; a running server may rewrite its configuration and overwrite your edit.
1. Identify the world
Find the exact world name used by the server. Hytale stores world directories below universe/worlds. If the world is called lobby, its configuration file is:

2. Stop the server cleanly
Use the server console or your host’s Stop control and wait until the process has fully shut down. Editing while the process is running risks having the server save its in-memory value over your change. If several administrators share the machine, announce the short maintenance window so nobody starts the server while the file is being edited.
3. Back up config.json
Copy the file to a dated backup location before changing it. A simple copy such as config.json.backup-2026-10-15 makes rollback possible if a typo prevents the world from loading. Keep the original JSON formatting where possible; it makes later comparison easier.
4. Change IsFallDamageEnabled
Open the target world’s config.json in a plain-text or code editor and locate the property. To disable damage, set its value to the JSON Boolean false:

"IsFallDamageEnabled": trueUse lowercase JSON Booleans, with no quotation marks around true or false. A quoted value such as "false" is text, not a Boolean, and may be rejected or ignored. Preserve the comma rules around the property: every item except the final item in an object needs a comma.
5. Validate the JSON before starting
Check that the file still has matching braces and quotation marks and that no comment lines were added. If your editor has JSON validation, run it. A malformed file can stop the world from loading even though the fall-damage value itself is correct. If validation reports an error, compare the edited file with your backup and correct the character or comma identified by the editor.
6. Save and restart
Save the file, then start the server normally. The setting is read as the world loads. Repeat the edit for every world that needs the same behavior; there is no single universal switch in the world configuration described by the official schema.

Join the changed world with an administrator or test account, use a safe height and confirm the result. With the value set to false, a fall that would ordinarily cause damage should not reduce health. With true, the normal fall-damage behavior should apply. Test in the specific world you edited, not merely at the server’s global spawn, because the property is per world.

/world config falldamage false
/world config falldamage trueThe first command disables fall damage; the second enables it. You need administrator-level permission, and the command must be entered in a context where the server accepts world configuration commands. A successful command should provide a confirmation or change the behavior immediately, depending on the server build.
Verify the syntax on your build
This command route is documented by a hosting guide, not by the official IsFallDamageEnabled asset reference. Hytale server commands can change between builds, and permission systems can hide commands from non-administrators. Before using it on a live server:
- Run
/helpor the server’s current command-help equivalent. - Look for the
/worldconfiguration command and its accepted arguments. - Confirm that your account has the required permission.
- Apply the command in the intended world context.
- Perform a controlled fall and check the result.
If the command is unknown, rejected or has no effect, use the file method instead of repeatedly guessing syntax. Do not assume that a command accepted in one server build is available after an update.
Command versus file persistence
A command can be the fastest way to make a temporary administrative change, but you should verify how your build persists it. If the server does not write the value back to the world’s config.json, a restart could restore the previous setting. After using the command, inspect the world configuration when the server is stopped, or retest after a planned restart. The file method explicitly records the desired value in the world configuration.
Disable fall damage in only one world
Yes. Since IsFallDamageEnabled is stored in each world’s config.json, set it to false only in the chosen world. Leave the property as true in other world directories. For example, a no-damage lobby and a normal survival world can coexist:

The key operational detail is to edit the directory that corresponds to the world players actually enter. A setting in a staging or backup world will not affect the live lobby. If your server uses copied world folders, recheck the active world name after migrations or restores.

Make a lobby or spawn safe without changing the whole world
The base setting has world-wide scope. If players should be protected only in a lobby, arena staging area or event zone, use an area-protection plugin that supports a fall-damage flag. The Protect Area plugin documents a falldamage combat flag with Boolean-like values such as true and false.
How the area approach differs
- World setting: every location in that world follows the same rule.
- Area flag: only the named protected area follows the plugin’s rule; locations outside it can retain normal damage.
- Operational cost: the plugin must be installed, enabled and compatible with the server version, and its configuration may need updating after server upgrades.
Use the plugin’s own current documentation and in-game help for the exact area-creation command and flag syntax. The documented capability establishes the falldamage flag, but plugin commands and compatibility are separate from Hytale’s built-in world schema. After creating the area, test both inside and just outside its boundary to make sure the protection is not larger or smaller than intended.
Troubleshoot a setting that does not work
The value keeps reverting
Stop the server before editing. A running process may write its in-memory configuration over your manual change. Confirm that you edited the active world’s file, not a backup or a similarly named directory, then restart and test again.
The server will not load the world
Restore the backup and compare the edited file for a missing comma, quote or brace. Ensure the value is the unquoted JSON Boolean false or true. Do not add comments, trailing commas or an extra copy of the property. Once the original file loads, reapply only the single value change and validate the JSON before starting.
The command is unknown or denied
Check /help on the current build and confirm administrator permissions. The documented command may not exist in every version, and a host panel may restrict console commands. Switch to the configuration-file method if the command is unavailable.
Fall damage changes in one place but not another
That is expected when worlds have separate configuration files. Check the world name shown by your server tools and inspect the corresponding directory under universe/worlds. If you use a region plugin, also check whether the player is inside the named area and whether another area rule has priority.
The lobby is still dangerous after enabling an area flag
Verify that the plugin is loaded and compatible with the current server version, that the flag is spelled falldamage, and that its value is Boolean-like rather than a quoted sentence. Test within the exact protected boundary. If plugin behavior is uncertain, disable fall damage for the entire lobby world with IsFallDamageEnabled instead.

Which approach should you use?
Choose the world file when you want a durable rule with no plugin dependency, such as a creative test world or a permanently safe lobby. Choose the administrative command when you need a quick change and your current build confirms the syntax and permissions. Choose an area plugin when a single world must contain both safe and normal-damage locations. Keeping the scope aligned with the requirement prevents accidental protection of an entire survival world or accidental damage in a player-facing spawn.

Is IsFallDamageEnabled a client setting?
No. It is a Boolean on the server’s world instance, so players cannot change it from their own Hytale client.
