Why a JPEG XL Image Won’t Open in Chrome—and How to Fix It

Chrome may not open a .jxl image because JPEG XL decoding is gated behind an experimental flag and a build setting. Learn the practical conversion workaround and how to check Chrome’s flag.

If Chrome won’t open a JPEG XL image, the likely reason is that JPEG XL decoding is not enabled in every Chrome build. Chrome’s documented decoder is an experimental, gated feature, so the simplest reliable workaround is to open the image in a JPEG XL-compatible viewer or editor and export it as a JPEG or PNG.

Why Chrome may not open a .jxl file

JPEG XL is an image format, commonly identified by the .jxl extension and the image/jxl media type. Chrome describes it as standardized as ISO/IEC 18181. However, format standardization does not mean every browser build can decode it.

Chrome’s 145 release notes, last updated February 10, 2026, list JPEG XL decoding in Blink under Origin trials. The notes say the decoder uses jxl-rs and is gated behind both the enable-jxl-image-format flag and the enable_jxl_decoder build flag. As a result, the browser setting alone may not be enough: the build itself must also include the decoder. Chrome 145 release notes

Chrome’s platform-status release notes also list JPEG XL decoding and describe format capabilities such as progressive decoding, wide color gamut, HDR, high bit depth, and animation. That listing does not establish that decoding is enabled by default in every Stable Chrome installation. Chrome 155 release notes

Try the practical fix first: export a JPEG or PNG

For most people, converting a copy of the image is more straightforward than relying on an experimental browser feature. Open the JXL file in an image viewer or editor that supports JPEG XL, then use its export or save-as option to create a JPEG or PNG. Open that exported copy in Chrome.

Use JPEG when a broadly compatible, typically smaller photo file is the priority. Choose PNG when you need lossless image data or transparency. Exporting to either format may not preserve every JPEG XL capability, such as HDR, wide color gamut, animation, or high bit depth; the result depends on the source image and the converter’s export options.

Check whether your Chrome build exposes the experimental decoder

  1. In Chrome’s address bar, enter chrome://flags and press Enter.
  2. Look for enable-jxl-image-format.
  3. If the option is present, read its description and consider whether you want to enable an experimental feature. Apply the change using the control shown on the flags page, then relaunch Chrome if prompted.
  4. Try the JXL image again. If the option is absent, or enabling it makes no difference, use the conversion workaround instead.

Google explains how to access browser flags and warns that they expose features that may not be ready for production. Its guidance says, “We do not recommend you set flags on your daily production browser.” The flag also cannot supply the separate enable_jxl_decoder build setting if that decoder was not included in your Chrome build. How to tell whether the issue is Chrome or the file

Try opening the same image in a viewer or editor that supports JPEG XL. If it opens there, the file is likely readable and Chrome’s decoder availability is a plausible explanation. That check is useful, but it cannot rule out every file-specific issue.

If another compatible application also cannot open or export the image, the available information does not identify the cause. Do not assume the file is corrupted without checking that specific file. You can also try another known-good JXL image to see whether the problem is limited to one file.

Quick Recap

Which approach should you use?

Approach What to expect Best fit
Export as JPEG or PNG Requires an image viewer or editor with JPEG XL support; creates a copy Chrome can open. Everyday use, especially if the Chrome flag is missing or you prefer not to change experimental settings.
Try Chrome’s flag May be available only when the installed build also includes the decoder build flag; experimental features may be unsuitable for daily browsing. Someone who wants to investigate Chrome’s gated decoder and is comfortable with experimental features.
