Safari 17 and later supports JPEG XL. Chrome support depends on the installed version and whether its JPEG XL flag is enabled, while Firefox support is documented in Nightly and is not yet default in stable Firefox as of October 7, 2026. For opening local files, several desktop image viewers support JXL, but some require plugins. A browser that can display a web image is not necessarily the same thing as your operating system’s file viewer or thumbnail handler.
Browser support for JPEG XL
| Browser | Status as of October 7, 2026 | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Safari | Supported from Safari 17 onward. Safari can render a JPEG XL image after it has fully downloaded, but does not progressively display it during download, according to MDN’s image format guide. | Check that the installed Safari version is 17 or later. |
| Chrome and Chromium-based browsers | Status is release- and flag-dependent. MDN describes Chrome 145 and later as supporting JPEG XL behind the #enable-jxl-image-format flag. Chrome Platform Status lists decoding in Chrome 155 release notes, but its record was marked preview/currently Beta when captured; the scheduled Stable release date was October 6, 2026. The sources do not establish that every Stable user had received the feature by October 7. |
Check the installed build and whether #enable-jxl-image-format is available and enabled. See MDN and Chrome Platform Status. |
| Firefox | Mozilla documents support in Firefox Nightly. The compatibility table lists Firefox 157 as disabled by default and Firefox 158 as supported; version 158 is after October 7, 2026. | Do not treat Nightly or a future compatibility-table entry as default support in stable Firefox. Check the installed channel and version. See Mozilla’s Intent to Ship post and Can I Use. |
| Other browsers | The libjxl project inventory lists Safari and smaller browsers including Waterfox, Basilisk, Pale Moon, Zen, and Floorp. This is a project-maintained inventory, not a comprehensive independent compatibility test. | Verify support for the specific browser version rather than assuming that a Chromium or Firefox relationship guarantees JXL support. See the libjxl software support inventory. |
How to check whether your browser can display a JXL image
- Check the browser version and channel. Use the browser’s About page or version information to distinguish Stable from Beta, Nightly, or another preview channel.
- For Chrome, check the JPEG XL flag. Enter
chrome://flags/#enable-jxl-image-formatin the address bar if the flag is available in your build. Enable it and relaunch Chrome. If the flag is absent, the feature may not be available in that build. - Test the exact use you need. Open a JXL image from a web page or local file, depending on your goal. Browser display does not confirm that the operating system can generate thumbnails or open JXL files in its default photo app.
Desktop image viewers that list JPEG XL support
The libjxl software inventory lists the following viewers. Availability and requirements can vary by application version and operating system, so check the current application documentation before relying on a particular entry.

| Viewer group | Listed applications | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| General-purpose and other viewers | ImageGlass, XnView, Aspect, jpegview, Swayimg, tev, Oculante, and Tachiyomi | Confirm current release support for your platform. |
| Qt/KDE | Gwenview, digiKam, KolourPaint, qimgv, qView, nomacs, and PhotoQt | Confirm current release support for your platform. |
| GTK | Eye of GNOME, gThumb, and Geeqie | Confirm current release support for your platform. |
| EFL | entice and ephoto | Confirm current release support for your platform. |
| IrfanView | IrfanView 4.59 | The inventory says JPEG XL requires a plugin to be downloaded and enabled. |
Operating-system integrations are separate from viewer support
The libjxl inventory also lists Quick Look on macOS, a Windows Imaging Component plugin, and a Windows thumbnail handler. These entries do not mean every Mac or Windows installation supports JXL by default. Check each integration’s requirements and installation instructions.

Editing and conversion applications
If you need to edit or convert images rather than simply view them, the same inventory names Adobe Camera Raw, Affinity, darktable, GIMP, Krita, GraphicConverter, and RawTherapee. Support may be read-only or plugin-dependent: the inventory says RawTherapee can open JXL but does not yet export it, and Paint.NET requires a plugin.

What to consider before choosing a browser or viewer
- Release channel matters. Support in Nightly, Beta, or behind a flag is different from support enabled by default in a stable release.
- Define “support.” Rendering an image in a web page, opening a local file, generating a file-manager thumbnail, and providing an OS-level Quick Look integration are separate capabilities.
- Progressive rendering varies. JPEG XL supports progressive decoding, but MDN says Safari does not progressively render a JXL image while it downloads. Mozilla highlights progressive rendering in its Firefox implementation.
For websites: provide a fallback format
JPEG XL support is not universal. MDN recommends offering an alternative such as AVIF, WebP, or JPEG with a <picture> element, so browsers that cannot decode JXL can use another source. For example:
<picture>
<source srcset="image.jxl" type="image/jxl">
<source srcset="image.avif" type="image/avif">
<source srcset="image.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="image.jpg" alt="Description of the image">
</picture>The browser selects a supported source; the JPEG remains available as a final fallback. See MDN’s image format guidance.

Why Firefox support is still described as experimental
Mozilla’s August 2026 Intent to Ship: JPEG XL post says, “We added experimental support for JPEG XL behind a flag back in 2021.” That is historical context, not evidence that the feature is enabled by default in stable Firefox. The current channel and version remain important.
