If your front-load washer won’t drain, the cause may be a clogged accessible filter, a kinked or incorrectly installed drain hose, a blocked household drain, freezing, or an unbalanced load—not necessarily a failed pump. Turn the washer off and check the owner’s manual before opening a filter or using an emergency drain; error codes and safe procedures vary by make and model.
First, confirm that the washer is actually stuck
A washer may pause between stages rather than have a drain fault. GE says pauses of up to three minutes are normal for many of its models. Check the drain hose and its installation
- Turn the washer off. Inspect only hose sections you can reach safely. Look for kinks, compression, visible damage, or possible freezing.
- Compare the setup with the exact model’s instructions. Hose height, insertion depth, and required air gap differ by manufacturer and model. For example, Whirlpool’s guidance for the models covered on its page says the hose should extend no more than 4.5 inches into the drainpipe, should not be taped or sealed, and the standpipe should be at least 30 inches above the floor. - Do not borrow another brand’s measurements. Samsung’s U.S. guide gives its own insertion and height requirements and cautions against a kinked or damaged hose, airtight sealing, and certain extensions.
