What should you wear on a hot-air balloon ride?
Choose adjustable layers
Temperatures can change between an early launch and the later recovery. The FAA’s Balloon Flying Handbook, edition FAA-H-8083-11B, advises balloon crew to wear layers because temperatures may change between before sunrise and recovery. That passage is crew guidance, not a universal passenger dress code. Passenger-facing operators also recommend layers; one notes that dawn is the coldest part of its experience, while another describes adjusting layers as the morning warms or evening cools. Conditions depend on location, season and launch time, so check the forecast and dress so you can add or remove a layer.

Wear practical clothes and shoes
Pants are a practical passenger choice for stepping into and out of the basket; one operator specifically recommends them. Choose comfortable, flat, closed-toe shoes suitable for being outdoors. Fly Albuquerque recommends that footwear for passengers, and Fly Away Ballooning says closed-toe footwear is mandatory for its passengers. Requirements vary by operator, so follow the instructions for your flight.
The FAA handbook’s more detailed advice about long sleeves, trousers and cotton appears in its crew clothing guidance. It should not be treated as a universal passenger requirement or a reason to buy a particular fabric or jacket.

- Step 1: Spray water on the back of patch ( don't to tear off the glue ).
- Step 2: Put the patch on the right place of desired garment to avoid deviation ( or sew the patch on garment at first ).
- Step 3: Set iron temperature for cotton. Cover patch with a piece of damp cloth and iron for 10-20 seconds.
- Step 4: Turn garment inside out and iron for 5-10 minutes to make sure the glue has melted. The patch is fixed on garment firmly.
What should you bring?
Keep belongings compact and ask the operator what may be carried in the basket. There is no universal passenger packing list established by the available operator guidance. A camera is an optional suggestion from one operator, not a requirement. That operator also suggests hearing protection for passengers with sensitive hearing. These are possibilities to consider, not rules for every flight.
- Check with your operator before bringing larger or additional items.
- Consider a camera only if you want one and the operator permits it.
- If you have sensitive hearing, ask whether hearing protection is appropriate and allowed.
Plan for time on the ground
A balloon outing includes launch and recovery, not only the time aloft. The FAA handbook notes that crew may need to walk or hike from a landing site that a chase vehicle cannot reach. One operator says passengers may be invited to help with setup and packing away, but that does not mean every passenger is expected to do so. Comfortable outdoor clothing and shoes are useful for the ground portion as well as the ride.

Check the operator’s instructions and weather updates
Passenger requirements and item restrictions are set by the ride operator, so ask about them before packing. Weather can also change the plan: the FAA explains that pilots use weather information when deciding whether to delay or cancel if winds are too strong or unstable. A scheduled flight is not a guarantee of launch. Follow your operator’s updates for the specific location and flight date.
The FAA handbook describes U.S. ballooning context; its crew guidance is not a substitute for passenger instructions from an operator, particularly outside the United States. Operator advice is specific to that service and may change.
