First identify which connection has failed: the aircraft-to-controller link, the controller-to-phone/app connection, or an FPV aircraft’s link to its goggles or control device. The fixes are different. Check the exact drone and controller models against the manufacturer’s compatibility list, then follow the instructions for that specific combination; pairing steps are not universal.
Identify which connection is failing
Look at the exact warning and test what still works before changing settings. DJI’s support guidance distinguishes an “Aircraft Disconnected” or “Aircraft not connected to RC” warning from “RC not connected to mobile device.” Those messages describe different links: the aircraft-controller connection versus the controller-phone connection. - The controller cannot operate the aircraft: troubleshoot the aircraft-to-controller link.
- The controller operates the aircraft, but the app cannot connect: troubleshoot the phone, cable, controller port, or app.
- You use FPV goggles or a separate motion/FPV controller: check each connection in the sequence specified for your aircraft and components.
Note the aircraft and controller model names, app name and version, and the complete on-screen message. Check that both devices power on and observe the aircraft’s status or arm lights; DJI recommends confirming power and arm-light status before proceeding to more involved checks. [DJI Support]

A pairing attempt will not resolve an incompatible combination. DJI says unmatched aircraft and remote-controller models cannot link. For brands other than DJI, use that manufacturer’s own compatibility list and manual. The detailed pairing, app, and recovery steps below are DJI-specific examples, not instructions that apply to every drone.
Reconnect the aircraft and controller
Use the linking procedure documented for your exact model and controller. DJI’s current linking guide describes an app-based “Control > Re-pair to Aircraft” path and a long press of the aircraft power button for more than four seconds for several supported models. The aircraft’s beep and sequentially blinking LEDs indicate readiness in that procedure; successful linking is indicated by two controller beeps and a solid green status LED. These indicators and steps are model-specific, so confirm your model is covered before using them. [DJI linking guide]

- Open the model-specific linking instructions or the app’s Connection Guide for your aircraft-controller combination.
- If your supported DJI model uses the documented DJI Fly procedure, select Control > Re-pair to Aircraft.
- Follow the guide’s instruction to put the aircraft and controller into linking mode. For the supported models covered by the procedure, this includes holding the aircraft power button for more than four seconds.
- Wait for the confirmation described in that guide. If linking does not complete, stop and recheck model compatibility and the exact procedure rather than trying button sequences from another model.
Check firmware and app versions safely
DJI identifies inconsistent aircraft and controller firmware as a possible connection cause. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the required aircraft, controller, and app versions for your exact combination; app labels and update routes can vary by model. [DJI Support]

For DJI update troubleshooting, the company says to keep the device battery above 50% and not power off or unplug equipment during an update. That threshold is from DJI’s cited failed-update guidance, not a universal rule: the Mini 4 Pro manual illustrates that battery requirements can differ by model. Follow the applicable manual’s threshold and update steps. [DJI failed-update guidance] [Mini 4 Pro manual and downloads]

If app-based updating fails repeatedly, DJI directs users to the appropriate DJI Assistant 2 version for the product. The Assistant 2 version is not the same for every DJI product. Use the official product-specific instructions and a USB data connection supported by that procedure; do not unplug or switch off equipment while firmware is being installed. If the controller works but the phone or app does not
When the controller still controls the aircraft, focus on the separate controller-to-phone path rather than re-pairing the aircraft. DJI’s troubleshooting covers wired configurations; use the instructions for your controller and phone, since ports and connection methods vary. [DJI mobile-device connection guidance]

- Reseat the cable at both ends and confirm it is plugged into the controller’s designated phone port.
- Remove a phone case if it prevents the connector from seating fully.
- Try another suitable data cable if the connection remains unreliable. Confirm connector type and compatibility with both the controller and phone; charging capability alone does not establish that a cable supports the required data connection.
- Restart the controller and check that the phone is compatible with the controller and app.
- Where the phone or controller uses relevant USB settings, check the model’s instructions for the required setting.
Do not buy a cable based only on its connector shape. Match the cable and port to the exact controller, phone, and documented connection or firmware procedure. [DJI mobile-device connection guidance]

FPV equipment adds links beyond the aircraft-controller connection. DJI’s Avata-series guidance calls for checking compatibility among the specific aircraft, goggles, and control device, selecting the correct aircraft model in the goggles, and updating firmware as directed. Its stated sequence is to pair the aircraft with the goggles before pairing the motion or FPV remote controller. Verify the exact component combination and current instructions before pairing; do not apply this sequence to other FPV systems. [DJI Avata connection guidance]

When to contact the manufacturer
If compatible devices will not enter linking mode or the manufacturer’s supported update and recovery steps repeatedly fail, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Save the exact error screen and record the aircraft, controller, app, and firmware versions so support can diagnose the failure. DJI directs unresolved linking and update problems to support or repair testing. [DJI Support]
