GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Red Dead Redemption 2 is a released game set in 1899. Rockstar has announced GTA 6’s protagonists, setting and story premise, but the available official material does not establish its map size, full set of open-world systems or how it compares with RDR2 in depth. The useful comparison is between GTA 6’s confirmed details and features players can already see in RDR2—not a premature verdict about which world is better.
What has Rockstar confirmed about GTA 6?

Rockstar’s June 24, 2026 preorder announcement says the physical package contains a download code inside the box; it should not be described as a disc edition. The same notice says digital preloading is scheduled to begin November 12, 2026.
Jason, Lucia and Leonida
Rockstar’s May 6, 2025 Trailer 2 announcement describes Jason and Lucia as drawn into a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida after an easy score goes wrong. The official Trailer 2 page identifies Vice City, USA, within that setting. This establishes a modern crime story in a fictional Florida-like state; it does not establish unannounced plot outcomes or prove that the trailer shows every part of the game.

How does GTA 6 compare with Red Dead Redemption 2?
The clearest contrast is one of premise and era. Rockstar’s RDR2 launch-trailer description places Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in America in 1899. After a robbery in Blackwater goes wrong, the gang flees federal agents and bounty hunters; internal divisions threaten it, and Arthur faces a choice between his ideals and loyalty. GTA 6’s announced premise, by contrast, centers on Jason and Lucia and a criminal conspiracy across Leonida.
| Comparison | GTA 6 | Red Dead Redemption 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Era and setting | Modern-day Leonida, including Vice City, USA; announced by Rockstar. | America in 1899; stated in Rockstar’s launch-trailer description. |
| Protagonists and premise | Jason and Lucia become entangled in a criminal conspiracy after an easy score goes wrong; Rockstar’s announced premise. | Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang flee after the Blackwater robbery goes wrong; Rockstar’s launch-trailer description. |
| Confirmed player-choice system | A comparable honor or morality mechanic is not established in the cited official GTA 6 materials. | Honor is integrated into interactions; Rockstar says actions can raise or lower it and that honor level has consequences and benefits. |
| Wildlife figure | A directly comparable species count is not established in the cited materials. | Rockstar described around 200 species of animals, birds and fish in 2018; this is the publisher’s figure, not an independent count. |
| Platforms and timing | Scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S according to Rockstar’s current page. | Released for PS4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018; PC release arrived November 5, 2019. |
What RDR2 demonstrates about world systems
Honor and consequences
RDR2 has a documented honor system. Rockstar’s 2018 explanation, “Honor in Red Dead Redemption 2,” says actions affect honor and that the player’s level brings consequences and benefits. The page gives examples of actions that raise or lower it. That makes honor an established feature of RDR2, not evidence that GTA 6 uses the same system.

- Play as Dani Rojas, a local Yaran, as you fight alongside a modern-day guerrilla revolution to liberate Yara
- Fight against Castillo’s regime in the most expansive Far Cry to date, through jungles, beaches, and Esperanza, the capital city of Yara
- Employ an arsenal of resolver weapons, backpacks, and vehicles to take down Castillo’s ruthless regime.
Wildlife and environments
Rockstar’s 2018 wildlife feature describes habitats and climates with “around 200 species of animals, birds and fish,” each behaving and responding to its environment. Attribute that figure to Rockstar’s published description; it is not a verified head-to-head count against GTA 6.

The cited official GTA 6 materials establish its story premise, characters, setting, release timing and platforms. They do not establish a comparable honor or morality mechanic, a wildlife count, map dimensions, mission structure or total world density. Scenes in official footage show what appears in those scenes; they are not proof of how extensive or interactive the whole playable world will be.

- UPGRADED VISUALS Contracts 2 introduces new levels of fidelity, with optimized visuals, improved FPS, and an enhanced game engine, resulting in the best looking entry to the series yet. Pull off ultra realistic stealth kills, captured in viscerally graphic detail thanks to the cinematic bullet cam.
- World scale: No map-area figure is established for a direct comparison.
- Player agency: A system comparable to RDR2’s documented honor mechanic has not been established in the cited GTA 6 material.
- Environmental detail: Rockstar’s RDR2 wildlife figure cannot be used to predict GTA 6’s species count or behavior systems.
- Story scope: The announced premise does not establish the full plot, mission structure or story length.
For those reasons, claims that GTA 6 will be larger, more realistic, more interactive or deeper than RDR2 are not substantiated by the cited announcements. A feature-by-feature or performance ranking will need comparable information about the released game.

Rockstar announced RDR2 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with Red Dead Online access included at launch, in its October 26, 2018 release notice. The PC version arrived November 5, 2019. These are launch facts; they do not establish current store stock, available editions or modern performance characteristics.

In its October 2019 RDR2 PC announcement, Rockstar cited increased draw distances, upgraded global illumination and ambient occlusion, improved snow trails and reflections, higher-resolution shadows, and updated tree, grass and fur textures. It listed 150GB of disk space for that PC release. Those historical PC specifications are not a direct performance comparison with GTA 6: the cited GTA 6 material does not provide PC specifications or a matched hardware benchmark.
