Choose a router by matching its WAN port to your internet service, its LAN ports to wired equipment, and its Wi-Fi features to the devices and rooms you actually use. Then decide whether one well-placed router can cover your home or whether its layout calls for mesh. A newer Wi-Fi generation is not, by itself, a guarantee of faster internet: the client device, signal, interference, and router placement all matter.

Start with your internet service and wired connections

Check the router’s WAN port specification against the connection entering your home and the speed tier you subscribe to. Then check its LAN ports for devices you expect to connect by Ethernet, such as a NAS or desktop PC. Compare both port speeds and the number of ports with your actual service and equipment; the available guidance does not establish a universal plan-speed-to-router formula.

ASUS identifies 10G Ethernet as relevant to NAS use or faster ISP plans, but a faster port is a wired-capacity specification—not a promise that a phone or laptop will reach that speed over Wi-Fi. Check the individual model’s current regional specifications rather than assuming every router in a Wi-Fi generation has the same ports. ASUS’s Wi-Fi 7 guidance discusses this distinction.

Match Wi-Fi bands and features to your devices

A router’s supported bands matter only if your client devices can use them and receive a suitable signal where they are used. ASUS describes the common trade-offs this way:

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Band What it can offer What to check
2.4 GHz Broader coverage Generally slower and more prone to interference, according to ASUS.
5 GHz A medium-distance option that is generally faster Check client support and signal at the device’s location.
6 GHz Wider, cleaner spectrum and high theoretical speed Clients must support 6 GHz; signals penetrate walls less effectively, and availability varies by local regulation.

Those are broad band characteristics, not a speed forecast for a particular room. Actual performance also depends on signal strength, interference, channel width, client specifications, and router placement. See ASUS’s frequency-band guidance and check the model’s regional specifications, since 6 GHz is not present on every Wi-Fi 7 router.

Check what your current clients support

List the phones, computers, tablets, smart-home devices, and other equipment that matter most. A newer router can connect to older clients, but those clients cannot use features or bands they do not support. ASUS says Wi-Fi 7 routers support traditional 2.4 and 5 GHz connections; using 6 GHz requires a compatible client.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Some legacy devices may have compatibility trouble with Wi-Fi 7 or newer encryption settings. ASUS suggests changing settings or using a separate IoT network as possible mitigations. Before buying, consider whether your must-connect devices support the router’s Wi-Fi features and security options; consult the device and router documentation if an older device fails to join. ASUS’s compatibility guidance describes these considerations.

Do not choose by the headline Wi-Fi rate alone

Advertised aggregate router rates do not equal the internet speed one client will experience. A client must support the relevant Wi-Fi features, and its result depends on the radio conditions and distance. Treat the headline rate as a product specification, not as a promised speed test result for your home.

Choose one router or mesh based on the floor plan

A single router is a sensible starting point when one well-placed access point can serve the rooms and devices that need coverage. If distance, walls, floors, or an awkward layout leave persistent weak spots, mesh adds multiple access points to extend coverage. Mesh is a layout solution, not an automatic performance upgrade: adding nodes is not always better.

Compare backhaul options before choosing mesh

  • Wired Ethernet backhaul: Connect mesh nodes by Ethernet where cabling is practical. This gives you a wired link between access points.
  • Wireless backhaul: Use a wireless connection between nodes when running cable is inconvenient; setup is simpler, but placement and radio conditions still matter.

ASUS says its mesh systems require a separate ISP modem. That is a manufacturer-specific statement, so check the system’s requirements and your provider’s equipment before purchase. ASUS also warns that more nodes are not necessarily better. Its ZenWiFi BT6 product page lists up to 5,800 sq. ft. for a two-pack; that is an undated manufacturer coverage specification accessed in 2026, not an independent coverage test, and actual coverage depends on the home and setup. See ASUS’s mesh guidance and the ZenWiFi BT6 product page.

  • WAN and LAN: Are the port speeds and port count suitable for your service and wired devices?
  • Client support: Do your important devices support the bands and Wi-Fi features you are paying for?
  • Coverage: Is one well-placed router likely to serve the home, or does the floor plan point to mesh?
  • Mesh connection: If considering mesh, can you use Ethernet backhaul, or will nodes connect wirelessly?
  • Security and updates: Does the router offer the security settings you need, and does its manufacturer provide software updates?
  • Workload-specific controls: ASUS recommends QoS features for gaming and, for families or offices, broad coverage, multiple ports, and throughput. These are the manufacturer’s recommendations, not independent rankings.

Set up the router with security in mind

Security is part of choosing and maintaining a router, not just a box to tick during installation. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s home Wi-Fi security guidance, published in December 2022, recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption, unique administrator credentials, current router software, and a guest network.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

The FTC also advises considering whether to turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP because they can weaken security. These settings may serve convenience or compatibility needs, so weigh that trade-off against your use rather than disabling them without consideration. If you enable a guest network, use it to give visitors a separate network rather than sharing your main Wi-Fi password.

  1. Choose WPA3 Personal if your devices support it; otherwise, WPA2 Personal is also recommended by the FTC.
  2. Set a unique administrator password and a strong Wi-Fi password rather than reusing credentials from other accounts.
  3. Install router software updates and check periodically for later updates.
  4. Enable a guest network for visitors.
  5. Review remote management, WPS, and UPnP; consider disabling them if you do not need their convenience or compatibility benefits.
