Why a Blender Leaks from the Base—and How to Fix It

A bottom leak often comes from the blade assembly seal or a cracked jar. Locate the first wet point, unplug the blender, and check parts only as your model’s manual allows.

A blender that leaks underneath the jar most often has a missing, misplaced, worn, or poorly seated seal around the blade assembly—or a cracked jar. First find where the liquid appears: leakage from the lid has different causes, and liquid reaching the motor housing calls for extra caution. Unplug the blender before inspecting or handling the jar or blades.

Find where the leak starts

“Leaking from the base” can mean liquid is escaping from the jar’s bottom assembly, or that liquid has run onto the blender’s motor housing. Dry the outside of the jar and look for the first wet point before deciding what to repair.

  • At the lid: Liquid may be spilling over because the jar is overfilled or the lid is not positioned correctly. Tefal and Kenwood distinguish this kind of top leakage from a leak underneath the jar.
  • At the blade assembly or jar seam: Check the seal, how the blade unit is fitted, and the surrounding jar for damage.
  • Through the jar wall: A crack or split can let liquid escape. Stop using a cracked jar.
  • On the motor housing: The liquid may have traveled from a leak above. Unplug the blender and do not use it while liquid is present on or inside the motor base.

How to check and fix a bottom leak

  1. Stop and unplug the blender. Do not inspect or adjust the jar while the appliance is plugged in.
  2. Remove the jar and dry its exterior. This makes it easier to identify the original leak point rather than follow liquid that has run down the outside.
  3. Inspect the jar for cracks. Check the bottom and sides. If you find a crack or split, stop using the jar and consult the manufacturer’s replacement-parts or service options.
  4. Check the blade assembly and seal against the model’s manual. If the blade unit is designed to come off, verify that its gasket or sealing ring is present, correctly oriented, and seated as the instructions show. Braun Household advises checking that the gasket is present and the blade assembly is screwed tightly onto the jar. Tefal and Magimix also direct users to check that the seal is correctly positioned.
  5. Reseat or tighten only as the manual specifies. A removable unit may need to engage fully with its recesses or screw into place without a gap. These details vary by model; do not apply another brand’s fitting or locking method to your blender.
  6. Replace a damaged seal only with a compatible part. Match the gasket to the exact blender model and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Rings that look similar can differ in profile, dimensions, or orientation.
  7. Stop and seek service if the leak remains. If the seal is built in, the blade unit is not meant to be removed, or the assembly still leaks after a model-approved check, contact the manufacturer or an approved repair centre.

When a gasket check is not the answer

The jar is cracked

A cracked container cannot be made safe by tightening the blade assembly or replacing its gasket. Tefal and Oster identify a cracked or split jar as a possible source of leakage. Stop using it and check the manufacturer’s guidance for a compatible replacement jar or service.

The blade unit or seal is not removable

Do not force a blade assembly apart if the model is not designed for user removal. Tefal advises having a non-removable blade unit with a suspected damaged seal checked by an approved repair centre. It also recommends approved service if leakage persists.

How to avoid a repeat leak

  • Use the jar, blade assembly, and seal in the configuration specified in your model’s manual.
  • Before blending, confirm that a removable blade unit is fully seated and that its seal is in the correct position.
  • Use replacement seals and jars specified for the exact model; appearance alone does not establish compatibility.
  • If liquid appears at the lid, check the fill level and lid position before assuming the bottom assembly is leaking.
