To export a novel, choose the manuscript scope in your writing app, select Markdown, DOCX, or EPUB for the next task, review the available structure and formatting options, then open the exported file and check it. The exact controls vary by app, and an export may leave out notes, extras, or other project material.
Choose the format for what happens next

Export the manuscript in five checks
- Choose the scope. In the app’s project, compile, or export view, select the whole project or the intended chapters and scenes. Confirm whether notes, extras, material sheets, trash, or unfinished scenes are included or excluded. “Export” may refer to one sheet, selected sheets, a group, or the whole project.
- Pick the output format. Choose Markdown for a text-focused file, DOCX for a Word editing handoff, or EPUB for a reflowable ebook workflow. If the app offers multiple text formats, check whether you need a plain file or a package that can include assets.
- Review the options the app provides. For DOCX, look for style, page size, and contents settings. For EPUB, look for title, author, cover image, style, and which heading levels appear in the table of contents. Not every app offers all of these controls.
- Run any preview or pre-export checks. If available, look for problems such as missing metadata or empty scenes, and confirm the selection is the intended manuscript.
- Export and inspect the result. Open the file in the application that will receive it. Check the opening, chapter sequence, section breaks, title and author information, and ending. Compare it with the project to catch missing material before sharing or distributing the file.
Keep an untouched copy of the writing project before converting or re-importing. Export documentation describes how a product creates output; it is not a backup plan.
What export options the documented apps provide
The following details summarize each product’s own documentation, accessed October 4, 2026. They are not independent test results, and app features can change.

Ulysses
Ulysses’ export help lists Text, HTML, ePub, PDF, and DOCX. Its Text choices include Plain Text, Rich Text, Markdown, TextBundle, and TextPack. EPUB settings include title, author, cover image, style, and table-of-contents heading levels. The documentation also says project Extras are excluded from project export and material sheets are excluded when exporting a group or multiple sheets. Check the selected scope rather than assuming all project content will be bundled. Ulysses also maintains an export styles catalog.
Calliope
Calliope’s export documentation lists Markdown, Google Docs, DOCX, EPUB, and PDF. It describes its EPUB as reflowable, with per-chapter contents and a navigable table of contents. The documentation says Markdown export is available to anonymous writers, while Word, EPUB, and PDF require a signed-in account. Google Docs export creates a new document rather than syncing into an existing one; confirm that behavior suits your handoff.

Writer Studio
Writer Studio’s export documentation lists DOCX, EPUB, FB2, PDF, and Markdown. It says parts, chapters, and scenes are exported in written order, metadata provides title and author, and Trash is excluded. It also describes pre-export checks for issues such as a missing title or empty scene. These are statements about Writer Studio’s implementation; inspect your own output.

Inspect the parts most likely to go wrong
- Scope: Make sure the export contains the intended chapters and scenes, in order. Check whether the app omits project items such as extras or trash.
- Structure: Confirm chapter breaks, headings, and section transitions. For EPUB, check that navigation and the table of contents lead to the expected chapters.
- Metadata and presentation: Review title, author, cover, and style where those options exist. For DOCX, also confirm that the document style and page setup suit the recipient.
- Assets: If the manuscript includes images, verify they are present in the exported result. Do not assume a Markdown file includes them; some apps provide a separate asset-capable format.
- Completeness: Compare the beginning and end of the exported document with the project, then check intermediate chapters for omissions or misplaced material.
For EPUB, use an ebook reader to review the reflowed result. For DOCX, open the file in Word or the recipient’s chosen word processor. For Markdown, open it in a text editor that displays the file’s structure.
