If a rip from a disc labeled “3D” plays like an ordinary flat video, first check what kind of disc you ripped and what the resulting file contains. A 3D Blu-ray and a DVD are not interchangeable: the commonly described MVC workflow applies to 3D Blu-ray, and an ordinary DVD rip should not be assumed to contain two stereoscopic views. Then match the file’s stereo format to what your player and display can interpret.
First, check whether the source was a 3D Blu-ray or a DVD
“3D DVD rip” is often used informally to describe a 3D movie file, but the source format matters. MakeMKV’s documentation describes handling 3D Blu-rays; it does not establish that a DVD contains stereoscopic video simply because the movie is associated with 3D. Identify the disc format and inspect the ripped file before changing playback settings.

MakeMKV describes its role as transferring disc content to MKV without changing or compressing the video and audio. That is a rip or remux, not necessarily a conversion into a format your particular 3D playback setup accepts. See the MakeMKV FAQ.

For a 3D Blu-ray, check whether the MVC (Multiview Video Coding) stream was selected during the rip. A MakeMKV support discussion describes selecting the “Mpeg4-MVC-3D” video stream. If the rip contains only the ordinary 2D view, switching the television or player into a 3D mode cannot recreate the missing second view. The stream-selection details are discussed in the MakeMKV support thread.

Do not treat an MVC-preserving MKV as if it were already a side-by-side (SBS) or top-and-bottom (TAB) video. Those are different ways of arranging the left- and right-eye images. A 3D-aware conversion workflow can produce frame-compatible layouts from 3D Blu-ray/MVC input; the BD3D2MK3D forum thread describes Full or Half SBS, Top & Bottom, and frame-sequential output. This is a community workflow example, not a guarantee of current compatibility with every version, computer, player, or display.
Match the file’s layout to the player and display
Once you know what the file contains, check that the playback chain supports it. An MVC file, an SBS file, and a TAB file are distinct inputs. A player that cannot decode the retained MVC stream may need a compatible 3D-aware conversion; a player expecting SBS or TAB may show two pictures instead of combining them into depth if it receives the wrong layout or is in the wrong playback mode.

Use the input mode supported by your player and display for the specific file. Exact menu names and device-specific instructions depend on the equipment and are not established here, so consult its manual rather than relying on a generic “turn on 3D” instruction. There is no universal best choice between retaining MVC and converting: compatibility, whether the stream is preserved or re-encoded, resolution and quality effects, and subtitle handling all matter.
Separate missing depth from a stretched or squashed picture
A picture with no depth usually points to a missing stereoscopic stream, an unrecognized layout, or playback in the wrong mode. A picture that looks unusually wide, narrow, tall, or squashed is more likely an aspect-ratio issue. Correcting the aspect ratio can fix geometry; it cannot restore a missing eye view.

DVD video may use anamorphic encoding, where stored frame dimensions and intended display dimensions differ. HandBrake’s anamorphic video guide explains this distinction. Check the file’s aspect-ratio handling separately from its stereo format, especially if the source really was a DVD.
If it really was a DVD, verify the selected title
When a DVD rip contains the wrong material, the selected title or chapter structure may be the issue. MakeMKV says DVD analysis can choose titles and chapter structures automatically; its manual mode gives advanced users control when the automatic selection is wrong. Correcting the selection may recover the intended title or segment, but it does not prove that the disc contains stereoscopic 3D video. See the MakeMKV manual.

Check subtitles as a separate compatibility issue
With an SBS encode, subtitles may need to be duplicated or positioned for both views and rendered at the appropriate stage. The BD3D2MK3D community thread describes this as setup-dependent. If subtitles appear in only one view or at an awkward position, check the conversion and playback path; do not assume one particular TV or media-server setting will fix every combination.
