Grand Prix
Grand Prix is cup-style racing. Nintendo lists local split-screen play for its Switch version, while SEGA’s launch information confirms local play more generally. Nintendo product listing

Friend Match

Time Trial and competitive events
Time Trial offers solo, time-focused racing. SEGA added the regular Legend Competition event mode in its December 2025 update; later update notes also refer to World Championship Qualifiers in the competitive ecosystem. How multiplayer works—and why platform matters
SEGA says supported platforms can race together through crossplay, bringing together players across platforms. Local and online player counts are not universal: Nintendo’s Switch listing specifies 1–4 players on one system, 2–8 through local wireless, and 2–12 online. The practical choice is whether you want shared-screen races in the same room, online races with friends, or matchmaking against other players. Crossplay helps with the last two, but the exact local setup and player limits depend on platform. If a particular local-wireless arrangement is essential, confirm its hardware requirements on the store page for your edition before buying.

What progression and customization add
Progression combines vehicle and gadget customization, World Match rating, unlocks, event participation, and Donpa Tickets. Nintendo describes unlocking gadgets and leveling a kart. SEGA’s December 2025 patch notes explain that some gadgets require Gadget Plate rank thresholds and that Donpa Tickets can buy some gadget kits previously distributed as Festival rewards. That gives players more to work toward than a single cup result: you can tune a vehicle setup, improve online standing, and pursue unlocks or event rewards. It also means the precise availability of gadgets and competitive balance can shift. SEGA’s March 19, 2026 patch described online balance adjustments and changes to item and course behavior; its June 24, 2026 update added gadgets, a Donpa Ticket bonus chance in World Match and Legend Competition, and increased gadget availability by rank. Which version should you buy?
The physical Nintendo Switch 2 edition was announced for March 26, 2026. SEGA said its content does not differ from other platforms and that Nintendo Switch save data can transfer to the Switch 2 edition. The announcement also described a Werehog Pack as an early-purchase bonus; that announcement does not establish that the offer is still available. The source material describes the Switch 2 edition as matching the content on other platforms, but it does not provide a basis here to compare performance or technical quality between editions. Choose based on where you want to play, who you want to play with, and the platform-specific multiplayer setup you need.
Who is it worth buying for?
- Good fit: You want arcade racing with friends, local party play, cross-platform online competition, or solo Time Trials.
- Good fit: You enjoy tweaking vehicle builds, unlocking gadgets, and having ranked or event goals to pursue.
- Check your setup first: Local player counts and hardware needs depend on platform; Nintendo’s published counts apply to its Switch listing.
- Less compelling if: Your main reason for buying is a story campaign. The official material cited here centers on racing modes, events, and customization and does not document a narrative campaign.
