Alucard is Dracula’s half-vampire son and Castlevania’s recurring hero who chooses to oppose his father and protect humans. The name refers to different versions of the character: the main game continuity centers on the protagonist of Symphony of the Night, while Netflix’s animated continuity follows Adrian Țepeș, a separate adaptation of the same basic family conflict.
Alucard at a glance
Alucard is a dhampir, or half-vampire, born from Dracula’s bloodline. His defining decision is not to inherit his father’s war against humanity, but to resist it. That makes him both an opponent of Dracula and an emotional heir to the vampire lord: he understands Dracula’s power and worldview from inside the family, yet repeatedly turns those advantages against him.

There is no single, universal Castlevania timeline for every appearance. Konami’s core games, the Netflix animated series, and other reboots use related ideas without sharing one continuous chronology. The safest way to answer “Who is Alucard?” is therefore to identify the continuity first.
The three continuities you need to separate
| Continuity | Alucard’s identity | Primary function | Key chronology |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Castlevania games | Dracula’s son and a dhampir hero | Selectable ally, then lead protagonist and covert operative | Dracula’s Curse, Symphony of the Night, later game appearances |
| Netflix animated continuity | Adrian Țepeș, son of Dracula and Lisa | Ensemble protagonist alongside Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades | Animated Castlevania, followed by his return in Nocturne |
| Other reboots | Version-dependent | Separate interpretation of Castlevania’s mythology | Do not insert these stories into the main game or Netflix sequence |
This distinction prevents the most common error: treating the Alucard who explores Dracula’s castle in Symphony of the Night as if he were living through the exact same events shown on television.

Alucard in the main game timeline
Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse (1989)
Alucard’s first major game appearance establishes the essential relationship: he is Dracula’s son, but he is not committed to Dracula’s cause. Konami’s official description calls him “Dracula’s forgotten son” and presents him as a possible ally for Trevor Belmont. In gameplay terms, he is one of Trevor’s selectable partner spirits. That role is important even before Alucard becomes a lead character: the series introduces him as a supernatural figure who can stand beside the Belmont family against his own father.
The 1989 release is therefore the starting point for the game version of Alucard’s history. It establishes his divided heritage and his willingness to fight on the human side, rather than presenting him simply as another vampire enemy.
The decision to suppress his vampiric nature
After helping Trevor battle Dracula, Alucard makes a drastic attempt to escape the curse of his ancestry. Konami’s later synopsis says he “had submerged his vampiric powers and entered into what was supposed to be an eternal slumber” in order to purge the world of his cursed bloodline. This is the bridge between his early appearance as Trevor’s ally and his starring role in Symphony of the Night.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997)
Symphony of the Night is Alucard’s defining game and the clearest explanation of why he remains one of Castlevania’s signature characters. The story takes place four years after Richter Belmont defeats Dracula. Richter then disappears, and Dracula’s castle materializes again. Alucard awakens from the sleep he expected to be eternal and enters the castle to discover what happened.
The game’s external mystery is Richter’s disappearance and the return of the castle. Its personal conflict is Alucard’s attempt to confront the evil connected to his father while still resisting the blood in his own body. Konami’s official synopsis identifies Maria Renard’s investigation, the influence of Shaft, Richter’s absence, and Alucard’s return as the setup. These elements make Alucard more than a replacement Belmont: he is investigating a crisis that is also a test of whether he can define himself independently of Dracula.
Konami lists the original PlayStation and Sega Saturn release date as October 2, 1997. In the game’s chronology, the events occur in 1797, after Richter’s victory and before Alucard’s later modern-era identity. The exact order matters: Symphony is not Alucard’s first encounter with Dracula’s legacy, but it is the first game in which that legacy becomes the central subject of his own investigation.

- He wakes from his intended eternal sleep. His return is triggered by the reappearance of Dracula’s castle and Richter’s disappearance.
- He investigates rather than inherits. Alucard enters the castle to find the cause of the crisis, not to claim Dracula’s throne.
- He confronts the family curse. The danger is supernatural, but the emotional question is whether Dracula’s blood determines Alucard’s identity.
- He works within the broader Belmont story. Trevor’s earlier alliance and Richter’s disappearance connect Alucard’s personal history to the recurring human defenders of Castlevania.
That combination of investigation, resistance and inherited guilt explains why the game is the essential starting point for anyone who wants to understand the character.

After Symphony of the Night: Genya Arikado in Grimoire of Souls
Alucard’s later game identity is Genya Arikado. Konami describes Arikado as “A persona of Alucard, assigned to a secretive Japanese government agency.” The wording presents Arikado as a professional cover or operational persona rather than a new, unrelated character. His work continues Alucard’s established pattern of confronting supernatural threats from outside the public eye.
This is the clearest answer to the question “What happens to Alucard after Symphony of the Night?” He continues to exist in the game mythology through a concealed modern identity, but the supplied official summaries do not provide a single, complete event-by-event biography connecting every later appearance. It is more accurate to describe Arikado as a later role for Alucard than to invent a continuous chronology the games have not formally laid out in one synopsis.
Konami lists September 3, 2026, as the service-termination date for Grimoire of Souls. That date describes the game’s service status, not a new event in Alucard’s fictional timeline.

Alucard in Netflix’s animated continuity
Adrian Țepeș, not the Symphony of the Night protagonist
Netflix’s animated Castlevania uses the name and core premise but creates a separate continuity. Its Alucard is Adrian Țepeș, the son of Dracula and Lisa. He becomes one of the series’ three principal protagonists alongside Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades.

The shared family relationship does not make the television story a direct adaptation of the 1997 game’s chronology. Adrian’s identity, relationships and development belong to the animated continuity, while the game Alucard’s defining journey is anchored to Dracula’s Curse and Symphony of the Night. Treating the two as one biography creates contradictions in setting, sequence and character function.
Meeting Trevor and Sypha
In the animated story, Adrian’s path intersects with Trevor and Sypha, and the three form the core alliance opposing Dracula. This changes Alucard’s dramatic role from a mostly solitary investigator to an ensemble co-lead. His knowledge of Dracula is personal, while Trevor brings the Belmont family’s human resistance and Sypha brings her own capabilities and perspective. The alliance-building is therefore as important to the series version as the bloodline conflict.
The campaign against Dracula and its aftermath
The television arc follows Adrian as he fights beside Trevor and Sypha during the campaign against Dracula. The conflict is not only a battle between heroes and a villain; it is also a family trauma in which Adrian must oppose his father while confronting what Dracula’s actions have done to the people around them.

After the campaign, the series presents Adrian in an aftermath marked by isolation. That emotional consequence distinguishes the animated portrayal from a simple victory narrative: defeating Dracula does not erase Adrian’s grief, family history or responsibility. The available official character descriptions establish this broad arc, but they do not provide a complete episode-by-episode chronology here, so individual scene order should not be treated as part of this summary.

His return in Castlevania: Nocturne
Adrian returns in Castlevania: Nocturne. Because Nocturne belongs to the same animated continuity, it should be understood as a later continuation of the television version’s story, not as a bridge into the game timeline. For a spoiler-aware viewing order, watch the original animated Castlevania story before Nocturne so Adrian’s identity, alliance and isolation are established before his return.

What is Alucard’s real name?
For the Netflix version, the answer is Adrian Țepeș. That is the character’s personal name in the animated continuity. In the main games, “Alucard” is the identity used for Dracula’s son, and later “Genya Arikado” is identified by Konami as a persona of Alucard. The supplied official descriptions do not establish a separate birth name for the game version, so claims that assign one should be treated cautiously.
Recommended order to play or watch Alucard’s story
Game-focused order
- Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse (1989): Start here to see Alucard introduced as Dracula’s forgotten son and a possible ally for Trevor.
- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997): Continue with his awakening, the investigation into Richter’s disappearance and the return of Dracula’s castle.
- Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls: Treat Genya Arikado as a later modern persona of Alucard, not as a separate unrelated hero. Its service ended on September 3, 2026, according to Konami.
Animated order
- Castlevania: Follow Adrian Țepeș from his relationship with Dracula through his alliance with Trevor and Sypha and the campaign against Dracula.
- Castlevania: Nocturne: Continue with Adrian’s later return in the same animated continuity.
Do not alternate between these lists as though they were chapters of one timeline. The game order explains one version of Alucard; the animated order explains another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy Alucard remains central to Castlevania
Alucard gives Castlevania a viewpoint that neither a conventional vampire villain nor a purely human hunter can provide. He belongs to Dracula’s family, understands the supernatural threat from within it, and still chooses to oppose it. In the games, that choice is framed as redemption and bloodline conflict. In the Netflix series, it is also a story about family trauma, trust and rebuilding alliances after violence.
His role changes by medium, but the dramatic function remains recognizable: Alucard tests whether inheritance is destiny. He can be a selectable ally in an earlier game, the player character investigating a reappearing castle, a hidden government operative, or an animated co-lead. Across those versions, his importance comes from the same tension between what he has inherited and what he decides to do with it.
Quick Recap
Common timeline mistakes
- Calling Netflix’s Adrian the game protagonist: They share the Dracula relationship but belong to separate continuities.
- Starting with Symphony of the Night and assuming it is his first appearance: The game version was already introduced in Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.
- Treating Genya Arikado as a completely different character: Konami identifies him as a persona of Alucard.
- Assuming there is one complete universal chronology: Always name the continuity before giving dates or plot order.
- Expecting a fully enumerated Netflix episode timeline from a character summary: The established facts support Adrian’s identity, alliance, campaign, isolation and later return, but not an episode-by-episode list here.
