Darren Korb is the principal composer of Hades II. Austin Wintory co-composed the sequel’s orchestral pieces, which were recorded at Studio 1 at Abbey Road Studios in London. The music keeps Korb’s authorship and recognizable continuity with Hades, but expands into a larger, nearly four-hour score with more industrial and synth-oriented textures, a witchcraft-focused atmosphere, and broader orchestral writing for new characters and regions.

Who wrote the Hades II music?

Supergiant Games credits Darren Korb as the composer of Hades II. Korb also composed the original Hades soundtrack, so the sequel is not a handoff to a new lead musician. His return is the main reason the two games share a recognizable musical identity even when their moods and sonic details diverge.

Austin Wintory joined Korb for the orchestral side of Hades II. Supergiant’s official FAQ says the orchestral pieces were co-composed by Wintory and recorded at Studio 1 at Abbey Road Studios in London. That makes Wintory a collaborator on a defined part of the score rather than a replacement for Korb as the project’s principal composer.

  • Principal composer: Darren Korb.
  • Orchestral co-composer: Austin Wintory.
  • Orchestral recording location: Studio 1, Abbey Road Studios, London.
  • Developer and publisher: Supergiant Games.

The Hades II Steam listing also credits Korb. Supergiant’s version 1.0 announcement describes completion of the game as completion of its original soundtrack by Korb, while the FAQ identifies Wintory’s orchestral contribution. Read together, those credits give the clearest answer to “Is Darren Korb still the composer?”: yes, with Wintory collaborating on the orchestral material.

How the Hades II soundtrack differs from Hades

The sequel’s music is best understood as an expansion of Hades rather than a reset. Korb said he wanted to retain aspects of the first game’s music while adding elements for Hades II’s new tone and its “witchy vibes.” That approach preserves continuity for returning players but gives the sequel room to sound more ritualistic, mechanical and atmospheric.

A more industrial and synth-oriented palette

The clearest change described by Korb is a stronger industrial and synth-oriented character. Electronic textures play a larger role in the sequel’s identity, giving sections of the score a harder, more engineered edge than the earlier game’s baseline palette. “Industrial” here describes the kind of texture and atmosphere the interview discusses; it is not a published track-by-track instrumentation breakdown or a claim that every Hades II cue is electronic.

Synth-oriented writing can support several jobs in a game score. It can make a location feel unfamiliar, underline supernatural technology or machinery, and create a steady pulse for combat without relying exclusively on acoustic instruments. In Hades II, those qualities help distinguish the sequel’s witchcraft-centered premise while keeping the music energetic enough for repeated runs.

The “witchy” tone is an intentional extension

Korb’s explanation connects the new sound directly to the sequel’s tone. Hades follows Zagreus through the underworld, while Hades II centers on Melinoë and a witchcraft-focused conflict. The score therefore needs colors that suggest spells, rites, mystery and nocturnal danger alongside the momentum associated with Supergiant’s action design.

That does not mean Hades II abandons the emotional directness of its predecessor. The retained elements provide a familiar foundation, while the added textures make the world feel like a different chapter with its own dramatic priorities. Players who hear recurring stylistic traits should recognize Korb; players who notice denser electronics and more overtly mystical shading are hearing the sequel’s deliberate expansion.

More room for orchestral scale

Wintory’s involvement broadens the orchestral dimension of the score. Supergiant says the orchestral pieces were co-composed by Wintory and recorded at Abbey Road’s Studio 1, giving those cues a large ensemble production context. The collaboration is especially relevant to Hades II’s all-new characters and environments, for which Supergiant says the music was crafted.

The result is a score that can move between electronic, industrial colors and larger orchestral passages instead of treating either approach as the entire identity of the game. The available evidence establishes the collaboration and recording location, but it does not publish a complete instrument list, a cue-by-cue breakdown or percentages for electronic versus orchestral material.

How long is each soundtrack?

Supergiant describes Hades II’s completed soundtrack as “just under four hours of music created for this game.” The official Hades Steam listing describes the original game’s soundtrack as “two and a half hours.” Those figures show a substantial increase in scale, although they come from different official descriptions and should be treated as approximate rather than as a laboratory measurement of identical editions.

Measure Hades Hades II
Principal composer Darren Korb Darren Korb
Additional orchestral credit Not stated in the supplied official descriptions Austin Wintory co-composed the orchestral pieces
Officially described runtime Two and a half hours, according to the Hades Steam listing Just under four hours, according to Supergiant’s version 1.0 announcement
Sound and texture emphasized in the descriptions The earlier Hades palette More industrial and synth-oriented, with expanded orchestral writing and a witchier tone
Recording detail Not stated in the supplied official descriptions Orchestral pieces recorded at Studio 1, Abbey Road Studios, London

Using those published descriptions, Hades II contains roughly an hour and a half more music than the two-and-a-half-hour figure attached to Hades. That comparison should not be read as a promise that every player will hear four hours during a normal playthrough: game soundtracks include music for different areas, encounters, characters and states, and a run-based structure can repeat some cues while leaving others unheard for a time.

Why the sequel needed a larger score

Supergiant calls Hades II’s soundtrack significantly bigger than any it had released before and says it was created for the variety of the game’s all-new characters and environments. A larger world and a new protagonist create more situations that need musical identity: exploration, combat, character interactions, major confrontations and changes in dramatic intensity.

New characters require distinct musical viewpoints

Melinoë’s role and abilities give the sequel a different emotional center from Zagreus’s escape attempts. Music can reinforce that distinction without discarding the series’ established sound. Korb’s approach—retaining aspects of Hades and adding material for the new tone—lets returning listeners hear a family resemblance while associating the newer themes and textures with Melinoë’s journey.

New environments broaden the sonic map

Each additional region or setting can demand a different balance of pulse, ambience and orchestral weight. Industrial and synth-oriented elements can make an area feel tense or uncanny; orchestral passages can enlarge a confrontation or give a character moment greater emotional breadth. The nearly four-hour runtime provides enough space for those contrasts to recur and develop instead of compressing every location into a small set of interchangeable cues.

What Austin Wintory’s orchestral role means

Wintory’s credit is specific: he co-composed Hades II’s orchestral pieces with Korb. It does not establish that he wrote every orchestral passage, led the entire soundtrack or replaced Korb on any other part of the score. Korb remains the principal composer named by Supergiant.

The Abbey Road recording detail also applies to those orchestral pieces. Studio 1 is a London recording venue, and the official FAQ identifies it as the location used for the Hades II orchestral sessions. No official source in the supplied material assigns a separate composer to the synth or industrial material, so those parts should not be attributed to Wintory by default.

What is confirmed, and what is not

The following points are directly supported by Supergiant’s credits, FAQ and version 1.0 announcement, plus Korb’s interview comments:

  • Darren Korb composed both Hades and Hades II.
  • Austin Wintory co-composed Hades II’s orchestral pieces.
  • Those orchestral pieces were recorded at Studio 1 at Abbey Road Studios in London.
  • Supergiant describes Hades II as having just under four hours of original music.
  • The Hades Steam listing describes the original soundtrack as two and a half hours.
  • Korb intentionally retained aspects of Hades while adding elements for Hades II’s new tone and witchy atmosphere.
  • The sequel is characterized in the interview as more industrial and synth-oriented.
  • Supergiant lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Bandcamp, YouTube and other streaming services as listening outlets.

Those sources do not provide a formal technical analysis of every track, a published instrument-by-instrument inventory, independent listening-test results or a numerical split between electronic and orchestral cues. Describing Hades II as more synth-heavy or industrial is therefore a sourced characterization of its intended sound, not a measured statistic.

Does Hades II sound like Hades?

Yes, but not identically. The shared composer and Korb’s stated intention to retain aspects of the first game give Hades II continuity. The differences come from the sequel’s new tone, witchcraft-centered setting, expanded cast and environments, stronger industrial and synth-oriented emphasis, and additional orchestral collaboration with Wintory.

For listeners, the practical distinction is one of emphasis. Hades establishes the series’ musical language; Hades II uses that language while adding darker electronic pressure, more overtly mystical color and larger orchestral moments. It is recognizably a Korb soundtrack, but it is designed to make the second game feel like a new world rather than an expansion pack with unchanged background music.

Bottom line

Darren Korb is still the central composer of the series in Hades II, with Austin Wintory co-composing its orchestral pieces. The sequel’s soundtrack is nearly four hours long—substantially more than Hades’ officially described two and a half hours—and its sound broadens toward industrial and synth textures, witchier atmosphere and expanded orchestral scale. The music keeps the identity established by Hades while giving Melinoë, the new environments and the sequel’s supernatural conflict their own sonic space.
