Only people who meet the eligibility rules for the relevant Nobel category can submit a valid nomination. In most categories, the Nobel committee invites selected nominators; the Peace Prize is the important exception, because eligible nominators do not need an invitation. Self-nominations are not accepted, and sending a name alone does not create a valid nomination.
The annual cycle usually begins with invitations in September. Committees normally require nominations by 31 January of the award year, verify that submissions are valid, consult experts, and send recommendations to the appropriate prize-awarding institution. Laureates are announced in October and receive their awards at the December ceremony. Nomination files remain confidential for 50 years.

Who is allowed to nominate a Nobel Prize candidate?
The Nobel Foundation’s statutes set the baseline: a nominator must be competent under the rules for that prize, the nomination must be made in writing, and a personal application is not considered. The detailed definition of “competent” comes from the institution responsible for each prize, so there is no single public eligibility list covering all six categories. The governing framework is set out in the Nobel Foundation Statutes.

Most categories use an invitation system
For Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and the Economic Sciences prize, committees select and invite qualified people to nominate candidates. The official overview says the invited pool can include members of academies, university professors, scientists, previous Nobel laureates, members of parliamentary assemblies, and other people with relevant standing. This is a description of the broad model, not a complete or permanent roster. Invitations are designed to provide representation from different countries and universities over time.

The Nobel Prize Outreach overview notes that thousands of people are asked to submit candidates each year, but it does not publish a single current-year total. Receiving an invitation does not give a person unlimited authority: the nomination still has to follow the category’s current rules and submission instructions.
The Peace Prize does not require an invitation
For the Nobel Peace Prize, a person who belongs to one of the qualifying groups may submit a nomination without first receiving an invitation. The official Peace Prize facts page describes this route as open to eligible nominators from all corners of the world. “No invitation” does not mean “anyone may nominate”; the nominator must still fall within the groups recognized by the applicable rules. The Norwegian Nobel Committee evaluates those nominations and selects the Peace Prize recipient.
No self-nominations
A candidate cannot nominate himself or herself. Nobel Prize Outreach states this directly: “No person can nominate herself/himself for a Nobel Prize.” A friend, colleague, institution, or public figure also cannot make a valid nomination merely by sending an unsolicited name if that person is not qualified under the category’s rules.

The exact procedure differs somewhat between committees, but the annual sequence follows a recognizable pattern.
1. Invitations and preparation begin in September
Nobel nomination work starts in September. Committees send invitations to selected nominators in the categories that use invitations. Eligible Peace Prize nominators can prepare submissions without waiting for an invitation. The current Nobel overview describes this September start, and the organization’s timing information is also reflected in its Nobel Week media information.

At this stage, a potential nominator should check the current instructions for the specific prize rather than rely on an old form or a general description. Each prize-awarding body determines who qualifies, how a nomination is submitted, and what supporting information it requests.
2. The nominator submits a written nomination
Valid nominations are written submissions made by qualified nominators. The statutes rule out a personal application, so a candidate’s own request to be considered is not a nomination. A nomination also is not created by a casual public statement, a petition, or an unverified message sent to a Nobel-related address.
Use the current channel and format specified by the relevant committee. Because procedures can change and are not identical across categories, the general Nobel nomination page should be treated as an orientation point, while category-specific instructions control the actual submission: Nomination and selection of Nobel Prize laureates.
3. Submit by the annual deadline
The Nobel Foundation’s 2024 annual review says nominations must reach the committees no later than 31 January in the year of the award. The statutes describe the nomination period as extending through February 1, which accounts for the one-day wording difference sometimes seen in official material. For practical planning, submit by 31 January and follow the current deadline stated by the relevant committee.
A late submission should not be assumed to roll into the next award cycle. The committee’s current instructions determine whether a nomination is accepted, and nominations are valid only for the year in which they are submitted.

4. Committees verify eligibility and record the candidates
After the deadline, the committee checks whether each nomination came from someone entitled to nominate and whether it was submitted in the required form. It records the candidates whose nominations meet the rules. A nomination that fails the eligibility or procedural test does not become valid simply because the candidate is widely respected or has been nominated before.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBecause nominations apply to the current award year, a candidate who is not selected may be nominated again in a later year. A previous nomination neither guarantees continued consideration nor carries over automatically.
5. The field is narrowed and candidates are assessed in depth
Committees review the valid nominations, reduce the initial field, and examine the remaining candidates more closely. They obtain advice from domestic and foreign experts where appropriate. The committee procedures vary, but the common purpose is to assess the candidate’s work against the standards for that prize rather than to count how many nominations the candidate received.
Nomination volume is therefore not a public ranking system. A single valid nomination can enter the process, while a large number of nominations does not itself determine the result.
6. A recommendation goes to the prize-awarding institution
Committee members prepare a recommendation for the institution that awards the relevant prize. The committee’s recommendation is part of a longer decision process; being considered by a committee is not the same as being chosen as a laureate.

7. Laureates are announced in October and honored in December
Assessment and decision-making continue into early October. Laureates are announced publicly in October, followed by the award ceremonies in December. The Nobel Foundation’s 2024 annual review and Nobel Prize Outreach’s published schedule describe this progression from nomination to announcement and ceremony.
How the six prize categories differ
The invitation rule is the clearest difference established across the categories. Other details—who qualifies, what information a submission must contain, and which committee handles each stage—must be checked against the current instructions for that prize.
| Prize category | Invitation requirement | Who may nominate | Who evaluates and decides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | Generally invitation-based | People who meet the current category rules; broad examples include qualified academics, scientists, and previous laureates | The relevant category committee evaluates nominations and recommends to its prize-awarding institution |
| Chemistry | Generally invitation-based | Qualified nominators under the current Chemistry rules; the general invitation model is not a complete roster | The relevant category committee and prize-awarding institution |
| Physiology or Medicine | Generally invitation-based | Qualified nominators under the current Medicine rules | The relevant category committee and prize-awarding institution |
| Literature | Generally invitation-based | Qualified nominators under the current Literature rules | The relevant category committee and prize-awarding institution |
| Economic Sciences | Generally invitation-based | Qualified nominators under the current Economic Sciences rules | The relevant category committee and prize-awarding institution |
| Peace | No invitation is required for an eligible nominator | People in the qualifying groups defined by the Peace Prize rules; the route is broader but not unrestricted | The Norwegian Nobel Committee evaluates nominees and selects the recipient |
The table intentionally does not present a permanent list of eligible professions. The Nobel Foundation says the detailed rules are issued by each prize-awarding body, and those rules are the authority for a particular year.

It is an entry into consideration, not a prize
A valid nomination places a candidate in the committee’s review process. It does not mean that the candidate has won, is a finalist, or is favored by the awarding institution. Committees independently assess the candidates and make recommendations after expert review.

The Peace Prize facts page explicitly warns that nomination is not an official endorsement, an extended honor, or evidence that the nominee is affiliated with Nobel institutions. The same practical caution matters for every category: a nomination records that an eligible person submitted a candidate; it does not confer Nobel status.
It is not publicly verifiable during the normal cycle
Nobel rules keep nominees’ names and nomination documents confidential for 50 years. As a result, there is no authoritative public list of current-year nominees. News reports, claims by organizations, or a person’s own announcement cannot substitute for an official confirmation that the Nobel institutions are prohibited from providing during that period.
A practical checklist for an eligible nominator
- Identify the prize category. Do not assume that eligibility for one prize applies to another.
- Confirm your status. Check the current rules to establish that you are a qualified nominator; an invitation is required in the categories that use invitations, while eligible Peace Prize nominators do not need one.
- Use the official instructions. Start with the Nobel nomination overview, then follow the specific committee’s current submission method and required format.
- Submit in writing. A personal application by the candidate is not accepted, and an informal name-only message is not a substitute for a valid nomination.
- Meet the date. Plan for receipt by 31 January of the award year unless the relevant committee’s current instructions state otherwise.
- Keep the cycle in mind. A nomination applies only to that year. If the candidate is not selected, a qualified person may nominate the candidate again in a later year.
- Do not promise a result. The committee validates, investigates, consults experts, and recommends; the nomination itself is not a prediction of the outcome.
Common questions and points of confusion
Can anyone nominate someone for a Nobel Prize?
No. For five categories, nominators are generally selected and invited, and in every category the nominator must satisfy the applicable rules. The Peace Prize removes the invitation requirement for qualified nominators, but it does not remove the eligibility requirement.
Can I nominate myself?
No. Self-nominations are not considered under the Nobel rules.
Does a famous person’s public nomination make it official?
Not necessarily. The person must be qualified for that category and must submit the nomination through the required written process. Publicly naming a candidate is not proof that a valid nomination was received.
Why do some sources say January 31 and others February 1?
The 2024 annual review gives 31 January as the practical deadline for nominations received by committees. The statutes describe the period through February 1. Use 31 January as the safe planning date and follow the current category-specific instruction if it sets a different operational cutoff.
Can a candidate be nominated again?
Yes. Nominations are valid only for the current year, so a candidate may be nominated in a later year under that year’s rules. A prior nomination does not automatically carry forward.
Where can I find the current list of nominees?
You cannot obtain an authoritative current-year list from Nobel records. Names and nomination documents are confidential for 50 years. The absence of a public record is a rule of the process, not evidence that a candidate was not nominated.

Bottom line
A Nobel nomination is valid only when a qualified person submits it in writing under the rules for the specific prize. Most categories rely on invited nominators; the Peace Prize accepts nominations from eligible people without an invitation. Committees then verify submissions, consult experts, recommend candidates, and oversee decisions that culminate in October announcements and December ceremonies. Until 50 years have passed, the identities of nominees and the contents of their files remain confidential.
