Does Amazon require a white background?
For Amazon main images, the current Seller Central search-result extract says the background must be pure white—RGB 255, 255, 255. It also warns that unsupported or noncompliant images may fail to upload or be removed from search. Consult the live Seller Central product image requirements for current details and category exceptions; the available guidance does not establish how every Amazon upload or rendering workflow handles transparency.

Do not assume that every store or marketplace requires white, and do not assume that an accepted file format makes every background acceptable. Keep the primary image compliant with the destination’s rules, then use supporting frames to show details a cutout cannot communicate as clearly: how an item is used, its scale, texture, packaging, or how it fits a setting. How to make a clean, accurate product image
- Confirm the destination and image role. Identify the marketplace, category, and whether the image is primary or supporting. Open the current image policy and check for category-specific exceptions. Amazon’s seller article and Seller Central’s requirements cover Amazon, not every platform.
- Set the background to match the policy. If the rule calls for white, use an opaque white field and verify its pixel values when specified. For Amazon main images, the cited requirement is RGB 255, 255, 255. If your layout needs a cutout for reuse, preserve a transparent version separately rather than treating it as a compliant marketplace image by default.
- Light for detail and truthful color. Amazon says window light may be enough; artificial lights can help when it is not. White foam-board bounce cards can fill shadows and balance exposure. - Keep framing repeatable. A tripod helps maintain steady, consistent framing, especially across a catalog. Center the product and keep it fully visible; Amazon’s article advises filling 85% or more of the frame in its setup tips, but check the current requirements for your category rather than treating that figure as universal.

- Export for the destination. Follow the marketplace’s current format and dimension rules. Amazon’s seller article lists JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and non-animated GIF; it gives a longest-side range of 500 to 10,000 pixels, recommends at least six images, and prefers images larger than 1,000 pixels on each side to enable zoom. - Add supporting views where useful. Use additional images to answer questions the main image cannot, while following the platform’s rules for those images too.
Amazon image figures and their scope
Amazon’s older Home Selection style guide also specifies RGB 255 white and says the product should fill at least 85% of the frame. It advises against cropping into the product, props that are not for sale, and text, graphics, or logos, and emphasizes accurate color with neutral white balance.
