Traditional Format is the standard Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG answer: cards marked Forbidden in Advanced Format are generally playable, but Traditional Format’s own copy limits still apply. Genesys also permits most cards on the Advanced Forbidden list because it does not use the standard Forbidden & Limited list; however, Genesys excludes all Link and Pendulum Monsters and uses a point cap.
Advanced Format itself never permits a Forbidden card in the Main, Extra, or Side Deck. Special and Sealed events require their own event documentation, so do not assume that a card legal in Traditional or Genesys is legal there.

Traditional Format: the usual way to play Advanced-Forbidden cards
Traditional Format is the clearest official format for using a card that Advanced Format lists as Forbidden. KDE-US Tournament Policy v2.5 describes Traditional events as using “a wider card pool” in which “all cards that are legal for play” may be used. The same policy warns that some cards remain limited to a set number in the Deck.

That means “Forbidden in Advanced” does not automatically mean “unlimited in Traditional.” A card can move from Forbidden in Advanced to Limited or Semi-Limited under the Traditional list. You must check the Traditional list that applies to your region and tournament date before deciding how many copies to register.

What you can put in a Traditional Deck
- A card Forbidden in Advanced is generally eligible for the Main, Extra, or Side Deck in Traditional.
- The Traditional Forbidden & Limited list can restrict the number of copies, commonly to one copy for a card that remains restricted.
- Other deck-construction rules, such as minimum Deck sizes and Extra Deck limits, still apply unless the event documentation says otherwise.
The exact copy limit is the important practical difference. If you bring three copies because a card is unrestricted in your own testing environment, a Traditional tournament may still treat the Deck as illegal if the current Traditional list permits only one. Treat the list as a separate rules document, not as a simple “Advanced list with Forbidden cards switched on.”
Genesys: the standard list is replaced by a point system
Genesys allows another category of Advanced-Forbidden cards, but it is not Traditional Format with different limits. Official Genesys rules state: “The standard Forbidden & Limited Cards list is not used. All those cards can be used, except Link Monsters and Pendulum Monsters.” They also state: “No Link Monsters or Pendulum Monsters are allowed. All other cards are allowed.”
Therefore, a non-Link, non-Pendulum card that is Forbidden in Advanced can generally be played in Genesys. Its legality is controlled by the Genesys point values and the event’s published point cap rather than by the normal Advanced Forbidden & Limited list.
Three separate Genesys checks
- Card type: Remove every Link Monster and Pendulum Monster. Genesys excludes those card types regardless of whether a particular card is Forbidden, Limited, or Unlimited in Advanced.
- Genesys point value: Look up the current point value assigned to each card in your proposed Deck. A card’s Advanced status does not tell you how many Genesys points it costs.
- Event cap: Add the points for the complete Deck and compare the total with the cap announced for that event. The cap and point document in force for the tournament control the final result.
Genesys can consequently make a powerful Advanced-Forbidden card legal while making a different card difficult to combine with the rest of your strategy. The question is not simply “Is this card banned?” It is “Is this card allowed by Genesys, and does my complete list fit the current cap?”

Advanced Format: where Forbidden cards are never legal
Konami’s Deck Construction Rules define the Advanced restriction directly: cards marked “Forbidden” cannot be used in your Main Deck, Extra Deck, or Side Deck. This applies even if the card is central to your strategy, was legal in an older list, or is legal in another format.
Checking only the Main Deck is a common mistake. A Forbidden card cannot be placed in the Side Deck to be swapped in later, and it cannot be hidden in the Extra Deck because it is not currently part of the game plan. The restriction covers all three Deck sections.
Why an older list is not enough
Forbidden and Limited lists change periodically. A card’s status can change between testing and the tournament, and a local event may use a list that becomes effective on a specified date. Use the list named by the tournament organizer, not a screenshot, deck profile, or database result with no date.

Konami classifies offerings such as 3 vs. 3, Tag Duels, Speed Duel, and similar competitions as Special Formats. They may have supplemental policy documents or a separate list. “Special Format” is therefore not a blanket permission to use Advanced-Forbidden cards.

3 vs. 3 and Tag Duels
Team structure changes how the match is played, but the event can still impose its own Deck-construction restrictions. Confirm whether the organizer uses Advanced, Traditional, Genesys, or a custom supplemental policy, and check whether any team-wide copy or card-sharing rule is announced.
Speed Duel
Speed Duel has its own card pool and rules environment. A card being legal in Traditional or Genesys does not establish legality in Speed Duel. Use the Speed Duel documentation attached to the event rather than transferring assumptions from another format.
Other advertised special events
Local stores and large tournaments can publish an Operations Document or FAQ that narrows or modifies the general policy. If that document conflicts with a broad format description, the event-specific instruction is the one a player and judge will apply for that event.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A card’s Advanced status alone does not guarantee that it can be used: you cannot play a card you did not receive in the supplied product. Conversely, if an event’s announced Sealed rules permit a card from that product, the organizer’s instructions govern how it is treated for that event. Read the event announcement before bringing a prebuilt Constructed list.
How to verify a card before entering an event
- Identify the format name exactly. “Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament” is not sufficient. Write down Advanced, Traditional, Genesys, Speed Duel, Sealed, 3 vs. 3, Tag, or the exact custom label used by the organizer.
- Find the governing regional policy. KDE-US Tournament Policy v2.5 is identified as effective September 5, 2025 for North and Latin America. Other territories can publish different policy documents and effective dates.
- Check the format’s current list. For Traditional, review the Traditional copy limits. For Genesys, review the point values and cap. For Advanced, confirm that no card marked Forbidden appears in any Deck section.
- Check supplemental documents. Read the event FAQ, Operations Document, and registration announcement for restrictions that replace or add to the general policy.
- Audit every Deck section. Count the Main, Extra, and Side Deck separately. In Genesys, also calculate the complete point total and remove all Link and Pendulum Monsters.
- Ask the head judge before submitting. If a database, printed list, and event document disagree, bring the conflict to the judge before registration closes. A pre-event ruling is safer than discovering the problem during a Deck check.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“Forbidden” means illegal everywhere
This confuses Advanced status with universal status. Traditional generally opens the card pool, and Genesys does not use the standard list. The fix is to identify the format first, then apply that format’s restrictions.
Traditional means three copies of every formerly Forbidden card
Traditional still has copy limits. A formerly Advanced-Forbidden card may be Limited or Semi-Limited under the Traditional list. Count copies against the current Traditional restriction before printing a Deck list.
Genesys uses the Advanced list plus a few exceptions
Genesys does the opposite: the standard list is not used. Its decisive restrictions are the Link and Pendulum exclusion, point values, and event cap. Do not import Advanced list labels into a Genesys calculation.

A card legal in one event is legal at the next event
Policy versions, lists, point values, and caps can change. Keep the date and region beside every legality check, and recheck before each tournament rather than reusing an old screenshot.
Sealed events use your normal collection
Sealed construction is limited to the cards supplied at the tournament. Bring sleeves and a way to record the pool, but build only according to the announced product and construction procedure.
What to bring to a Traditional or Genesys tournament
- A dated Deck list that identifies the format and separates Main, Extra, and Side Deck cards.
- For Traditional, a copy-count audit against the current Traditional list.
- For Genesys, a point worksheet showing each card’s current value and the total against the event cap.
- Confirmation that no Genesys Deck contains a Link Monster or Pendulum Monster.
- Protective Yu-Gi-Oh! card sleeves in a uniform condition, plus replacements for damaged sleeves.
- A saved or printed copy of the event policy and any announced FAQ, with the effective date visible.
Regional and date qualifications
The quoted KDE-US Tournament Policy v2.5 is the North and Latin America policy identified as effective September 5, 2025. Konami territories can publish different policy documents, and a later revision can supersede that version. Genesys point values and event caps are likewise changeable. A player in Europe, Oceania, Asia, or another region should use that territory’s current Konami documentation and the organizer’s event page.
When a tournament FAQ or Operations Document supplies a more specific instruction, follow it for that event. General format language tells you where to start; the current regional policy and event documents decide whether your actual Deck is accepted.
