What the two main update switches control
HyperOS can separate downloading an update package from installing it. That distinction matters when you are trying to avoid unexpected background activity.

Download automatically
Xiaomi’s Redmi 13C 5G instructions describe this option as downloading system-update files in the background when the phone is connected to Wi-Fi. The file still consumes storage, and the download itself uses some network and battery resources. On that model, the route is Settings > About phone > Xiaomi HyperOS > three-dot menu > Update settings > Download automatically (Xiaomi Support).
Disable the switch if you do not want a large update package to arrive while you are working, travelling or trying to conserve a limited connection. The trade-off is that you must remember to check for updates yourself. Leave it enabled if hands-off downloads over Wi-Fi are more useful than that control.

Update automatically
Installation is a separate decision where the control appears. Xiaomi says of the Xiaomi 15 Ultra: “The automatically update feature on the Xiaomi 15 Ultra will check for new system versions and install them automatically in the background when the device is not in use at night.” That device’s instructions are under Settings > About phone > Xiaomi HyperOS > three-dot menu > Update settings, where Xiaomi tells users to turn on both Download automatically and Update automatically (Xiaomi Support).
Night-time installation can reduce interruptions during the day, but it also means the phone may restart or perform update work without a manual confirmation at the moment you notice it. If you need to choose the timing, turn this control off or use any scheduling choice your model provides. Do not assume every Xiaomi device offers the same overnight behavior.
How to find the settings on your Xiaomi device
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone or About tablet.
- Select Xiaomi HyperOS.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the upper corner.
- Choose Update settings.
- Review the switches that are actually displayed: usually Download automatically, Update automatically, or a mobile-data download option.
Xiaomi documents this HyperOS route in its general additional-settings guide (Xiaomi Support). Older releases and some regional builds use a different location: Settings > System > System update (Xiaomi’s system-update guide). If neither route matches, use the Settings search field for System update and follow the result for your model. A control that is absent from the page cannot be enabled through a hidden universal switch; Xiaomi exposes different options on different products and software versions.
Which configuration makes sense for battery-conscious use?

This is a control-and-convenience decision, not a ranking of guaranteed endurance. Xiaomi’s published instructions explain when downloads and installations happen, but they do not provide a comparative battery-life measurement for leaving either switch on or off.

Prepare before you install an update
Changing the switches does not remove the practical requirements of an installation. Plan the manual check or scheduled update so the device can complete it safely.
Use a stable Wi-Fi connection
Xiaomi recommends stable Wi-Fi for the Xiaomi 15 Ultra update process. Wi-Fi also prevents the package from consuming your mobile-data allowance. If your router is unreliable, wait until you have a dependable connection rather than repeatedly starting and stopping the download.
Have enough power
For the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, Xiaomi recommends at least 50% battery during the update process (Xiaomi Support). That figure is a preparation recommendation for that model, not a promise of longer battery life and not a universal threshold for every Xiaomi product. If your device displays a different requirement, follow its on-screen instruction.
Check free storage
Downloaded update files occupy storage. Xiaomi specifically cautions about this in the Redmi 13C 5G download guidance and in its Xiaomi 14T mobile-data instructions. Before downloading, remove or move files you no longer need and leave room for the package and the installation process. If storage is nearly full, disabling automatic downloads prevents a package from arriving at an inconvenient time; it does not create additional space by itself.

Decide whether mobile data is acceptable
The Xiaomi 14T instructions include Download using mobile data and a configurable period for automatic downloads (Xiaomi Support). Enable this only when you understand your carrier’s allowance and charges. For most users, Wi-Fi is the simpler default; mobile data is an option for situations in which waiting for Wi-Fi is impractical.
Will changing update settings actually improve everyday battery life?
There is no published Xiaomi comparison showing how many hours of normal use are gained by disabling automatic downloads or automatic installation. The official pages reviewed for these controls describe update behavior and preparation, not a battery-endurance test. Therefore, treat the switches as a way to control when background downloads, checks and installation occur—not as a proven battery-saving tweak.
Turning off Download automatically can prevent an unexpected update file from being fetched in the background. That may avoid a short-lived burst of network, processor and storage activity at an inconvenient moment. It does not establish that your phone will last longer through a full day once the update has been downloaded or installed manually. Similarly, night-time installation may be less disruptive, but Xiaomi does not claim that it increases routine battery capacity or screen-on time.
Updates can contain security fixes, bug fixes and system changes, so postponing them has a maintenance cost. If you disable automation, set a reminder to check manually over Wi-Fi rather than forgetting indefinitely. The useful choice is the one that matches whether you value control over timing or unattended maintenance.

Diagnose drain with Xiaomi’s battery tools
If the phone is losing charge quickly, investigate the actual usage pattern instead of assuming the updater is responsible. Xiaomi directs users to its Battery saver tools to review detected battery-usage issues and apply suggested fixes (Xiaomi Support).
- Open the device’s Battery or Battery saver area in Settings.
- Review the detected usage issues and the recommendations shown for your device.
- Apply only the suggestions that fit your situation; Xiaomi states that recommendations vary according to real conditions.
- After changing an update switch, observe whether the drain coincides with a download or installation event. If it continues when no update activity is occurring, continue with the Battery saver investigation instead of changing update controls repeatedly.
This approach separates a one-time update operation from persistent causes of drain. It also avoids disabling useful maintenance when the real issue is identified elsewhere in the battery report.
Common situations and the safest response
The “Update settings” menu is missing
Check both About phone/tablet > Xiaomi HyperOS > three-dot menu and the legacy Settings > System > System update route. The menu is model- and version-dependent; a different label or location is expected on some devices. Use Settings search for System update if necessary.
An update downloaded without warning
Reopen Update settings and inspect Download automatically. On models that separate downloading from installation, switching this off prevents future automatic Wi-Fi downloads, but it does not delete a package already stored on the device. Check available storage before deciding whether to keep or remove any downloaded file through the options your model presents.
You want updates to happen only overnight
Keep automatic installation enabled only if your model documents unattended night-time installation and that timing suits you. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra guidance describes this behavior specifically; do not generalize it to every Xiaomi phone. If your device offers a schedule, use the schedule shown in its own Update settings page.
You are considering mobile-data downloads
On the Xiaomi 14T, open the mobile-data download option and set its period only after checking your allowance, likely charges and free storage. If those limits are uncertain, leave mobile-data downloading off and initiate the update on Wi-Fi.
The phone still drains rapidly after changing the switches
Changing update automation is unlikely to address drain unrelated to update activity. Use Battery saver’s detected-issue checks and recommendations, then compare the timing of the drain with any actual download or installation. Keep the update controls at the setting that best fits your preferred timing.

A practical setup for most users
- Open Update settings through the HyperOS path and note which controls your device provides.
- Leave Download automatically enabled if unattended Wi-Fi downloads and current software are more important than timing control; otherwise disable it and schedule a periodic manual check.
- Choose Update automatically according to whether unattended installation is acceptable. On the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, Xiaomi describes night-time installation when the phone is not in use; other models may behave differently.
- Keep mobile-data downloading disabled unless your plan, coverage and storage make it a deliberate choice.
- Before a manual update, use stable Wi-Fi, confirm adequate free storage and, for the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, aim for at least 50% battery as Xiaomi recommends.
- If battery drain remains, investigate Battery saver’s usage issues rather than treating update switches as a universal battery fix.
The result is predictable update timing without claiming a battery improvement that Xiaomi’s support material has not measured. You retain the option to install security and system updates while avoiding downloads that conflict with your network, storage or daily schedule.
